This Week at Prince of Peace...

Third Sunday after Epiphany                                   January 24, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10; Psalm 19; 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a

GOSPEL:  Luke 4:14-21
Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
            because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited.

A New Twist This Year... It's a Competition:
In addition to supporting your favorite team, we want to learn which of our ministry groups are the most generous. So, as you drop your donations (food or cash) into the containers, check off the number of items you donated for a group that you belong to or support. Our competing groups are: Sunday School Classes, Choirs/Grace Notes , Council, Fellowship Committee, Finance Committee, Men's Book Club and Men's Group, Social Ministries, & Woman's Book Club and Bible Study.

Upcoming Learning Event: We will have a Presentation on Children's Inn at NIH on February 7 at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary.

Get crafty with the PoP Playgroup in February when we meet at the Gaithersburg Community Museum (9 S Summit Ave, Gaithersburg, 20877) on Saturday, February 6 at 11:00 am. We'll make Valentines out of recycled materials during the museum's family discovery day. Admission is free, but the museum requests donations to cover the cost of materials for the craft. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie or Lauren with any questions!

All are welcome to Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner on Tuesday, February 9 from 5-7pm in the Fellowship Hall. Youth 6th grade and up are needed to cook and serve a delicious dinner of pancakes and sausage. Gluten-free/allergen-free pancakes are also on the menu. After dinner, Pastor Steve will lead us in one of his favorite rituals - burning palms for our Ash Wednesday service. For more info or to volunteer, contact Jean Bernstein.

Come join us as we begin our Lenten journey at our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 pm. Then during the Wednesdays in Lent beginning February 17th, we will have soup suppers from 6:15-7:15 pm and Evening Prayer from 7:15-7:45 pm.

Women's Retreat - Wearing God: On March 5 Pastor Christine will be hosting a women's retreat at Prince of Peace from 9:30am - 2:30pm. The theme is entitled: "Wearing God". During the retreat we will discuss and encounter overlooked ways of meeting God (ie. laughter, clothing, cooking, etc). The day will be filled with scripture, discussion, creating, and fellowship. I hope you are able to take some time out of your busy schedules and join other women for a day of refreshment. Sign up in the narthex. A cost of $20 per registrant will cover the cost of lunch and supplies. Please contact Pastor Christine if you have questions or are in need of financial assistance.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!
Many of you have seen pictures and heard Pastor Steve speak about his last two trips, but this time, Pastor Steve is leading the trip and inviting PoP members and friends to join in! To learn more, you can click here to read the brochure or email Pastor Steve. This will be a great trip and an excellent opportunity to deepen your faith and to learn more about the Bible and biblical history in a hands-on, experiential way!

Join us for Sunday School each week at 9:45 am!  For younger students we continue to use a rotational model which provides an experiential approach similar to VBS. For Middle and High School students, we use cool and quirky workbooks and short films to explore relevant topics. Your kids won't want to miss it!!
