This Week at Prince of Peace...

Second Sunday after Epiphany                                January 17, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Isaiah 62:1-5; Psalm 36:5-10; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

GOSPEL:  John 2:1-11
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

On Sunday, January 17 at 12:30 pm, we continue studying the Safe Haven curriculum which addresses the problem of human trafficking. This is a four session course which covers the issue of human trafficking, ways to identify those at risk or already in dangerous situations, and what we as a community can do about it. Course dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 2/7. Meet in BYC conference room. If you have questions, please see Pastor Christine.

Join us on Sunday, January 17 at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary to view the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA's newest broadcast entitled, "Confronting Racism: A Holy Yearning." The January webcast will raise the question of the racial disparity in the U.S. criminal justice system. Prince of Peace's Racial Justice Team is hosting this event. Potluck dinner will be served. Please bring something to share. We plan to eat during the broadcast and discussion.

Our next Serving opportunity is making casseroles for N Street Village. Please bring frozen casseroles to church on Sunday, January 24 by noon. They will be used in their Bethany House Day Program for lunch or in their night shelter for dinner. Pick up an empty aluminum pan (with casserole suggestions) from the narthex.

Parents: Bible Presentations will occur on January 30&31 during Worship.  If your child is between 2nd and 6th grade and has not yet been presented a Bible from PoP, please contact Janet Levine so that we have an inscribed Bible ready.

The February Glad Tidings deadline is Sunday, January 17. Please submit your articles, photos, etc. to Martha Rogers

Pastor Steve will be on vacation January 18-27.

NEW Body & Soul Wellness Program starts Thursday, January 21! Prince of Peace is proud to begin offering free health and wellness programming for adults, 18-and-over, on Thursday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the Besecker Youth Center beginning January 21. The program starts at 6:00 pm with a "Speed Topic" discussion on a wellness-related subject, followed by an Open Gym from 6:30-8:00 pm.
Drop in when you can! Activities will be supervised by Marybeth Stockman RN, MS, an ACSM-Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist. Weights and other specialized equipment will be available to help build functional and core strength, balance, agility and endurance. Click here for more details listed below.

Women's Book Group will meet Thursday, January 14 at 7:30 pm at the home of Gina Linton. The group will discuss The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan. RSVP to Gina.

Books and Beer, aka The Men's Book Club of Prince of Peace, kicks off its 2016 camaraderie campaign with a lively discussion of Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead, a sequel to Ender's Game. You read the book, we'll provide the beer and munchies. On Thursday, January 21 at 7:30 pm, we will meet at the home of Chet Wolejsza. Please RSVP to Chet. All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited.

Our 2016 "Saturday Dinners Out" Kick-off the New Year at Hot Breads in Kentlands! Join us after the Saturday service on January 23 around 6:15 pm at Hot Breads (70 Market St, Gaithersburg). All are welcome for this time of fellowship in a casual environment!

Mark your calendar for our Annual Congregational Meeting on January 31 at 1:00 pm!
At our annual meeting, we approve our budget, elect Church Council members and make other important decisions about our ministry together in the coming year. A Pasta lunch will be held prior to the meeting (following the late service); please signup in the narthex to bring salad, bread, or dessert and help with setup or cleanup. The Fellowship team is providing the Pasta! To help out, please contact Pamela Cook or Melanie Zobel.

Get crafty with the PoP Playgroup in February when we meet at the Gaithersburg Community Museum (9 S Summit Ave, Gaithersburg, 20877) on Saturday, February 6 at 11:00 am. We'll make Valentines out of recycled materials during the museum's family discovery day. Admission is free, but the museum requests donations to cover the cost of materials for the craft. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie or Lauren with any questions!

All are welcome to Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner on Tuesday, February 9 from 5-7pm in the Fellowship Hall. Youth 6th grade and up are needed to cook and serve a delicious dinner of pancakes and sausage. Gluten-free/allergen-free pancakes are also on the menu. After dinner, Pastor Steve will lead us in one of his favorite rituals - burning palms for our Ash Wednesday service. For more info or to volunteer, contact Jean Bernstein.

Come join us as we begin our Lenten journey at our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 pm. Then during the Wednesdays in Lent beginning February 17th, we will have soup suppers from 6:15-7:15 pm and Evening Prayer from 7:15-7:45 pm.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!
Many of you have seen pictures and heard Pastor Steve speak about his last two trips, but this time, Pastor Steve is leading the trip and inviting PoP members and friends to join in! To learn more, you can click here to read the brochure or email Pastor Steve. This will be a great trip and an excellent opportunity to deepen your faith and to learn more about the Bible and biblical history in a hands-on, experiential way!

Recycle your Advent wreath from the Intergenerational Event! Please remove the greens and leave the other parts in the basket in the foyer.

The Flower Chart for 2016 has been posted and most of January & February are still open!
Flowers can be given in memory or honor of a person or special occasion. A donation of $30 covers the flowers for a week, and they are yours to take home after the late service. Sign up on the Chart posted on the bulletin board in the narthex and place your donation (marked "Altar Flowers") in the Offering. Thanks for adding to our worship experience!

During the winter months, if inclement weather requires us to cancel services or activities, a notice will appear on our website homepage.

The December/January Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Our Adult Study "Divine Drama" continues Sunday at 9:45 am in BYC conference room. Join us for this year long, in-depth course that examines the Bible as a whole and its major themes. You do not need to attend every week-come when you can. Questions? See Pastor Christine.
Join us for Sunday School each week at 9:45 am!  For younger students we continue to use a rotational model which provides an experiential approach similar to VBS. For Middle and High School students, we use cool and quirky workbooks and short films to explore relevant topics. Your kids won't want to miss it!!
