This Week at Prince of Peace...

Baptism of Our Lord                                                 January 10, 2016

This Sunday's Readings
Isaiah 43:1-7; Psalm 29; Acts 8:14-17

GOSPEL:  Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Sunday School resumes This Sunday, January 10 at 9:45 am!

Faith-Full Families' Epiphany event will be held Thursday, January 7 from 6-7:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. Families with pre-school - elementary age children, and their siblings, are invited for dinner, crafts, a Bible story and fellowship. Sign up in the narthex, email Judy Bruening or just come! We will provide a main dish. If you would like to bring a side dish/salad or a dessert sign up in the narthex or let Judy know. If you just have younger children, you are welcome to join us for fellowship, too. Questions? Contact Judy Bruening.

Called to Serve: Openings on Your Church Council: The Nominating Committee is seeking candidates for four seats becoming available on Council in January - three adult and one youth member - to be elected at the POP Annual Congregational Meeting on January 31. Being on the POP Council is a great way to learn more about how Prince of Peace works, make new friends, and serve God and community. If you are interested in being on Council, know someone who would be a good candidate, or need additional info, please contact Shafer Smith by January 7.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!
Many of you have seen pictures and heard Pastor Steve speak about his last two trips, but this time, Pastor Steve is leading the trip and inviting PoP members and friends to join in! If you'd like to learn more, Pastor Steve will be offering an info session at 6 pm on Saturday, January 9 (right after the Saturday service). If you can't come, you can click here to read the brochure or email Pastor Steve. This will be a great trip and an excellent opportunity to deepen your faith and to learn more about the Bible and biblical history in a hands-on, experiential way!

Learning Event on Gaithersburg HELP is This Sunday, January 10 at 10:00 am! Join us in the sanctuary for our speaker, Linda Hanson, Executive Director of Gaithersburg HELP. Please come and learn more about this organization that serves the needy in our community. Our Adult Study "Divine Drama" takes a break this week so all can attend the Gaithersburg HELP presentation. The Adult Study resumes next Sunday, January 17 at 9:45am.

Beginning This Sunday, January 10 at 12:30 pm, the Safe Haven curriculum which addresses the problem of human trafficking will be presented. This is a four session course which covers the issue of human trafficking, ways to identify those at risk or already in dangerous situations, and what we as a community can do about it. Course dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 2/7. Meet in BYC conference room. If you have questions, please see Pastor Christine

The next Bible Art Journaling class is this Sunday, January 10 from 6-7:30pm
in the Fellowship Hall. This is a fun, relaxing class. No advance preparations are required, no biblical knowledge necessary, nor strong artistic abilities. The only thing you need to bring with you is your own journaling Bible (found online or in most bookstores). Generally they have larger margins which give us more space to create. You do not have to have attended past classes - each class stands alone. Questions? Contact Pr Christine.

Join us on Sunday, January 17 at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary to view the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA's newest broadcast entitled, "Confronting Racism: A Holy Yearning." The January webcast will raise the question of the racial disparity in the U.S. criminal justice system. Prince of Peace's Racial Justice Team is hosting this event. Potluck dinner will be served. Please bring something to share. We plan to eat during the broadcast and discussion.

Parents: Bible Presentation Weekend will be January 30-31. Second graders and older children through 6th grade who have not yet received a Bible from Prince of Peace will receive their Bibles during worship. If your child is between 2nd and 6th grade and has not yet been presented a Bible, please contact Janet Levine so that we have an inscribed Bible ready.

Our next Serving opportunity is making casseroles for N Street Village.
Please bring frozen casseroles to church on Sunday, January 24 by noon. They will be used in their Bethany House Day Program for lunch or in their night shelter for dinner. Pick up an empty aluminum pan (with casserole suggestions) from the narthex.

The 2015 Annual Report is in the works! If you have a Report to submit please email to the Office by Friday, January 8. Thanks!

The February Glad Tidings deadline is Sunday, January 17. Please submit your articles, photos, etc. to Martha Rogers.

Mark your calendar for our Annual Congregational Meeting on January 31 at 1:00 pm! A Pasta lunch will be held prior to the meeting (following the late service); please signup in the narthex to bring salad, bread, or dessert and help with setup or cleanup. The Fellowship team is providing the Pasta! To help out, please contact Pamela Cook or Melanie Zobel.

Emmanuel Lutheran, Vienna, is hosting the Walk for Water Concert on Friday, January 8 at 7:30 pm. Agape and Rachel Kurtz will be performing at the event, which will also include folks from around the Metro DC area for an evening of stories, and raising awareness and support for ELCA World Hunger. The event is free (a freewill offering will be collected). All donations will directly support the Walk for Water campaign at the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit. The December/January Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Join us for Sunday School each week at 9:45 am!  For younger students we continue to use a rotational model which provides an experiential approach similar to VBS. For Middle and High School students, we use cool and quirky workbooks and short films to explore relevant topics. Your kids won't want to miss it!!

Please consider giving to the ELCA Disaster Response to assist with the refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe. Visit the ELCA Disaster Response webpage to donate or learn more about how you can help.

We are experiencing phone problems in the Office and voicemail is not working.  If possible, please send an email instead of calling.
