This Sunday's Readings
Genesis 2:18-24; Psalm 8; Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12
Some Pharisees came, and to test Jesus they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her." But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."
People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Debt Reduction Update: The good news continues! We made additional principal payments in both September and October, reducing our mortgage balance to $345,062.
To put things in perspective, our mortgage balance was $714,578 when we refinanced on January 1, 2011. That loan comes due next year so we will be working with our Mission Investment Fund partners to get a new loan. The goal is to refinance as little as possible, so as we've said before every dollar really makes a difference!
Finally, we also want to thank everyone for their regular budget support of Prince of Peace. Because of the generosity of our members, we have been able to meet our other regular commitments, including making our budgeted benevolence contributions to both the Synod and all the other organizations that we support. Thank you!
****************************
This weekend we welcome Anika Uhrig into God's family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism!
LEARN! As part of the learning opportunities planned by Social Ministries, a speaker from Interfaith Works will be coming to talk about their work this Sunday, October 4th between services at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary. Come and learn about this charity and how they assist within our community! We will also serve at Interfaith Works in October...
SERVE! After learning about Interfaith Works we have an opportunity to serve! On Saturday, October 10 from 9am-noon, we will sort clothing and household items at Interfaith Clothing Center (located on Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville). Volunteers must be 14yrs or older. Please sign up online or in the Narthex so carpool arrangements can be planned. Great opportunity for Youth - SSL hours approved (please bring a form for them to sign that day). Please contact Lisa Woodard with any questions.
Organizing Action for Racial Justice: In response to recent events of blatant racism, a group is forming to explore what actions we as a congregation should take. We hope to begin laying some groundwork for action towards racial equity within our congregation, community, and county. If you are interested in being part of this task force, please join us on October 4 at 12:30 pm in the youth center (conference room). Questions? Please see Pastor Christine.
Our Annual Blessing of Animals will take place at our 5 pm Saturday service October 10!
Come and bring your pets!
An Updated Photo Directory is Under Construction! A draft has been posted in the narthex. Please review your entry, correcting any contact info that has changed. Place a check mark if the info is up-to-date. Also, check out your photo - if it is out-of-date or missing, please gather your family and come to a Photo Session. Gordon will be taking photos in the Music Room on October 11 and 25 (after the early service, and before & after the late service).
Bible Art Journaling: This year we are offering a devotional class which encourages you to engage actively with the word of God through doodling, illustration, and note-taking in your Bible. We will meet once a month, but you do not need to attend every session. Our next meeting is Sunday, October 11 from 6-7:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. It's not too late to join in the fun! Please bring a 'journaling Bible' with you to class. Questions? See Pastor Christine.
Join us for Sunday School each week at 9:45 am! For younger students we continue to use a rotational model which provides an experiential approach similar to VBS. For Middle and High School students, we use cool and quirky workbooks and short films to explore relevant topics. Your kids won't want to miss it!! Our Adult Study "Divine Drama" will take a break this week so all can attend the Interfaith Works presentation. It will resume next Sunday, October 11 at 9:45am.
The Serving in Worship schedule for October & November has been posted
on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

The Men's Book Club "Books and Beer" will discuss Andy Weir's The Martian at its next gathering on Thursday, October 15 at 7:30 pm. The book, self-published by Weir in 2011, is the genesis of the current movie of the same name. An American astronaut is stranded on Mars and endeavors to return to earth. All men of Prince of Peace and their male friends are invited for an evening of fun and fellowship. Please RSVP to Charles Sullivan.
Join us for our next Saturday Dinner Out on October 17 after the Saturday service! Meet around 6:15 pm at Moe's Southwest Grill (12151 Darnestown Rd).

On Saturday, October 24 at 3:30 pm, PoP Playgroup will visit The Village at Rockville (aka the National Lutheran Home) to distribute placemats to residents, made during the preK/K Sunday School hour. We'll visit with residents, and share a story or song or two together. We'll meet in the parking lot outside the main building (9701 Veirs Dr, Rockville, 20850) at 3:30 pm and then walk in together to register. Please contact Jamie or Lauren with any questions!
