This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost                           August 9, 2015

This Sunday's Readings

1 Kings 19:4-8; Psalm 34:1-8; Ephesians 4:25-5:2

GOSPEL:  John 6:35, 41-51

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

Our Saturday Dinners Out after the Saturday service have been great fun! Mark your calendar for the next meet-up Saturday, August 8 around 6:15 pm at Panera in the Kentlands. All are welcome!

The Social Ministry Committee will meet on Tuesday, August 11 at 6:30 pm in the Youth Center.

Join us on Wednesday, August 12 for our next Exploring Faith gathering. Racism has been an especially difficult issue to talk about both in our society and the church. Yet, as Presiding Bishop Eaton pointed out in a pastoral letter last month, it's important for us as people of faith to struggle against racism in our lives and in our society. We'll focus our discussion in August specifically around how people of faith look at and address racism. To get our conversation started, we're asking folks to read a recent book by Sandhya Rani Jha, "Pre-Post-Racial America: Spiritual Stories from the Front Lines" (available through Amazon in both hard copy and Kindle versions). Come at 6:30 pm for dinner and fellowship (sandwich bar and fixings provided); discussion at 7:00 pm.

Big Payment Made! Because of those who have authorized their Capital Campaign contributions to be transferred to the Debt Reduction Fund, on July 12 we were able to make an additional $200,000 principal payment on our mortgage! Because of this and new contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund, so far this year we've retired $228,581 in mortgage debt. Our current balance now stands at $369,674. The decrease in principal so far this year means that with each new regular payment more than $800 that used to pay interest is now paying principal. We encourage folks to continue to make contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund, as every gift helps. Thank you to all who have contributed in any way!

Women's Book Group will meet Thursday, August 13 at 7:30 pm at the home of Deborah Dixon. The group will discuss Defending Jacob: A Novel by William Landay. RSVP to Deborah.

The September Glad Tidings deadline is Sunday, August 16. Please submit your articles, photos, etc. to Martha Rogers

Join us on Monday, August 17 at 7:00 pm for the last session of our 3-session Summer Bible Study! We will meet in the sanctuary to study the Bible and how we can put His Word into practice in our everyday lives. (You do not need to attend all 3 sessions - come as you are able!) Our next topic will focus on being led by the Holy Spirit. Bring a Bible and beverage if you wish, light refreshments will be provided. Questions can be directed to Sherry Kienzle.

Something else to do this summer with the kids!!! Lutheran World Relief collects quilts to deliver all over the world. They also collect Personal Care Kits, Baby Care Kits, Fabric Kits, Fleece Tied Blankets, and School Kits. If you would like to make one or more of these kits, we can deliver them when we deliver the quilts in late September (exact date TBD). For complete directions, see http://lwr.org/personalcarekits.

Many thanks to all those who helped in any way with VBS: volunteering, making decorations, and donating food/supplies. Special thanks to Judy & Megan Bruening and Lori Kohne for coordinating the event. Check out our Facebook page for pictures of all the fun. We had a wonderful week and it would not have been possible without support from the congregation!

Please join the PoP Adult Choir for the Fall 2015 season! Adult choir is for people who want to praise God with great music and fun filled fellowship. We rehearse Wednesdays 7:30-9:00pm starting on Wednesday, September 2. We are preparing for a Christmas Cantata again this year, please join and be part of a musical celebration with us. For more info, please contact the Choir Director, Claire Cho.

Would you like to have the excellent opportunity to praise the Lord in song and have fun learning some great music? Then come out and join the Prince of Peace Hand Bell Choir!

The Hand Bell Choir will begin rehearsals for the Fall 2015 season and we are looking for new members!! The Hand Bell Choir is for children in 3rd-7th grade and we will rehearse each Sunday afternoon from 1-1:45pm beginning Sunday, September 13. We need a minimum of 6 children to form the choir. Please signup in the narthex or contact Danielle Drobny for more info.

We are experiencing phone problems in the Office and voicemail is not working.

If possible, please send an email instead of calling.

Tuesday Women's Bible Study will not meet for the remainder of the summer.
Join us when we resume in September.

If you can support the garden in this way, please leave your donation in the church office labeled "Fruitful Fields." For more info or to help, contact Marybeth Stockman.
