This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost                            July 12, 2015

This Sunday's Readings

Amos 7:7-15; Psalm 85:8-13; Ephesians 1:3-14

GOSPEL:  Mark 6:14-29

King Herod heard of what Jesus was doing, for Jesus' name had become known. Some were saying, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him." But others said, "It is Elijah." And others said, "It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." But when Herod heard of it, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised."

For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it." And he solemnly swore to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom." She went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the baptizer." Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

****************************

Sunday, July 12th we will be Celebrating Chris Schaefer! Chris is completing his time as our Youth & Family Minister and kicking off a whirlwind tour of new adventures this summer with CPE, his marriage, and then his teaching parish rotation for seminary. Our celebration will begin in the sanctuary at 11:30, with a FIESTA lunch to follow in the Fellowship Hall. A main dish and dessert are provided. Please bring a salad (fruit or veggie) or side to share. Questions? Please contact Pastor Christine.

Detroit Youth Gathering Diaper Collection ~ Imagine sending your baby or toddler to preschool or daycare wearing a plastic grocery bag instead of diapers. That is happening in Detroit. In fact, diapers are such a hot commodity, pharmacies and stores sometimes keep them behind glass. Got Diapers? Our youth will be traveling by bus and can take several boxes of much needed supplies to Detroit. Please drop off any size diapers or pullups at church by Sunday, July 12. Opened packages that have been "outgrown" are fine! Thank you for helping support the young families in Detroit. For those who prefer to shop online: you can also send diapers directly to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 13031 Chandler Park Dr, Detroit, MI 48213.

We are experiencing phone problems in the Office and voicemail is not working.

If possible, please send an email instead of calling.

The Serving in Worship schedule for July & August has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts. Thanks!

The July/August Glad Tidings is available on our website!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 27-31.This year's theme is "Everest - Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power". VBS is always a lot of fun! It's for children ages 3 (potty trained) through entering 5th grade. Registration forms are on the PoP website and in the narthex. Registration fee is $50 per participant with a max of $150 per family. Each family will receive a CD of the VBS music and a T-shirt for each child. Need based scholarships are available. We usually fill quickly so get your registration form in early. We hope you can join us and tell your friends too. See you on the mountain!

Would You Consider Providing Food or Supplies? A great way to help with VBS even if you're unable to be on-site during the program is to donate items we need to make snack and also breakfast foods for the volunteers each morning. There is a paper sign-up list in the narthex, or you can sign-up online through Sign Up Genius.

Join Women's Bible Study for our last two meetings this summer: Tuesday, July 14 & 21 at 12:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.No prep needed, we will be discussing some original biblical poetry which Susan Weiner has written. Come when you can; bring your lunch or a snack, if you would like. If you have questions or want to be included on our email distribution list, please contact Pastor Christine.

Join us on Wednesday, July 15 for our next Exploring Faith gathering. Those who traveled to Cuba will share their experiences, including stories, photos, insight about church and culture, and possible ministry partnerships. This is a great chance to see a bit of Cuba through the eyes of some of our members. Come at 6:30 pm for dinner and fellowship (sandwich bar and fixings provided); discussion at 7:00 pm.

VBS Meeting! There will be an important meeting for all new VBS volunteers and those volunteering for a new position. The focus will be on job descriptions, a typical day (!) and giving station leaders their materials, as well as some paperwork. The meeting will be held Thursday, July 16 at 7:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Please let Judy know whether you will be attending.

Our Saturday Dinners Out after the Saturday service have been great fun! Mark your calendar for the next meet-up Saturday, July 18 around 6:15 pm at Chipotle in the Kentlands. We look forward to spending time together in a casual environment. All are welcome!

Let your creativity show and help VBS! On Sunday, July 19th join us in the Fellowship Hall at 12:30 pm. We will be creating snowflakes, possibly snowshoes, scarves and earmuffs for our flamingos and other Everest inspired decorations. If you knit or crochet bring your needles - we will provide yarn.

Join us Monday, July 20 at 7:00pm for Bible Study! This is part of a three-session adult evening Bible Study being held during the summer on the third Monday of each month (6/15, 7/20, 8/17) from 7:00-8:00pm. We will meet in the sanctuary to study the Bible and how we can put His Word into practice in our everyday lives. (You do not need to attend all 3 sessions - come as you are able!) We had a great discussion about "abiding with God" during our June session. Our next topics will be mirroring His Son and being led by the Holy Spirit. We look forward to spending time discussing these topics as a group in order to live out our life's purpose! Bring a Bible and beverage if you wish, light refreshments will be provided. Questions can be directed to Sherry Kienzle

2015 School Supply Drive starts July 1st! Prince of Peace is collecting NEW school supplies again this year to help equip Montgomery County's neediest public school children with backpacks and other school supplies to begin the school year. Please leave donations in the collection box in the narthex. We are collecting the following new supplies from July 1st through August 9th. TOP 5 Items Needed: Sturdy Backpacks (grades K-12), Lined Filler Paper, Tab Dividers, 2-Pocket Folders, Pencil Pouches. Other Items Needed: 1-Subject Notebooks, Composition Books, Large Pink Erasers, Red & Black Pens, Packages of Big Markers, Scissors (Blunt Tip and Pointed Tip), Rulers, Boxes of Colored Pencils. Any items on the list will be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Woodard.

Join PoP Playgroup on Saturday, July 25 at 2:00 pm at the Germantown Splash Park (18056 Central Park Circle). There is an entry fee of $4 per person, but families may bring their own drinks, snacks, and coolers inside. The park has many "just right" water features for toddlers and preschoolers, and this year includes a new jumping pillow! (See http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/park_facilities/south_germantown/splashplayground_minigolf.shtm for more information.) PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie or Lauren with any questions!

Thank you to all who are contributing to our Capital Campaign! All donations will make an important difference! We especially want to thank those who have signed authorizations to transfer their Capital Campaign donations to the Debt Reduction Fund in order to reduce our mortgage. So far, we've received authorizations from about 60% our donors, representing more than 78% of the contributions. We invite others to join in this effort by filling out an authorization form if you've donated to the Capital Campaign, or by making a donation to the Debt Reduction Fund. Watch for more updates!

You Made a Difference! Thanks to your generous contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund, we were able to pay an additional $9,917 on our mortgage principal with our June payment. This enabled us to reduce our current loan balance to $572,629. Because of those who have authorized their Capital Campaign contributions to be transferred to the Debt Reduction Fund, we also expect to make a major principal payment in July. Thank you!

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!

Brochures are available online and in the narthex. Contact Pastor Steve for more info.

Fruitful Fields, the Prince of Peace Community Garden, has fenced-in plots ready for your favorite herbs, vegetables and flowers. It is, also, in need of Lowe's or Home Depot Gift Cards to buy lumber and hardware for fence and gate repairs, tools and equipment to make the gardens more successful. If you can support the garden in this way, please leave your donation in the church office labeled "Fruitful Fields." For more info or to help, contact Marybeth Stockman.

VolunteerSpot is our new way to stay informed and sign up for volunteer opportunities at Prince of Peace. An email is sent for each need, as it is identified. The message contains a link that makes it easy to add your name as a helper. Here are our current volunteer requests:
