This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost                            June 21, 2015

This Sunday's Readings

Job 38:1-11; Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32; 2 Corinthians 6:1-13

GOSPEL:  Mark 4:35-41

On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go across to the other side." And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

VolunteerSpot is our new way to stay informed and sign up for volunteer opportunities at Prince of Peace. An email is sent for each need, as it is identified. The message contains a link that makes it easy to add your name as a helper. Here are our current volunteer requests:

Volunteer Need

Social Ministry Volunteers

Worship Volunteers (Ushers, Snack volunteers, Prayer Writers, Acolytes, etc.)

There is a button with a link to current volunteer opportunities on our church web page; you can also click on the specific Volunteer Need above or here to see the complete list. Thank you for sharing your time and talents!!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 27-31.
This year's theme is "Everest - Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power". VBS is always a lot of fun for current members and a great way to attract new families as well. We still need helpers! Please signup in the narthex or contact Lori Kohne. VBS is for children ages 3 (potty trained) through entering 5th grade. Registration forms are on the PoP website and in the narthex. Registration fee is $50 per participant with a max of $150 per family. Each family will receive a CD of the VBS music and a T-shirt for each child. Need based scholarships are available. We usually fill quickly so get your registration form in early. We hope you can join us and tell your friends too. See you on the mountain!

Come and "get wild" with the playgroup in June! On Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 am, we'll meet at Meadowside Nature Center to see the raptors outside and some of the bugs and snakes inside as well! The center is located at 5100 Meadowside Lane (in Rock Creek Regional Park) in Rockville. See http://www.montgomeryparks.org/nature_centers/meadow/index.shtm for additional information. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie  or Lauren  with any questions!

To wrap up the year on a fun note before summer vacation, the Men's Book Club will discuss The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, DC, the work relies on Freemasonry for both its recurring theme and its major characters. Join us at 7:30 pm Thursday, June 18. All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited for fellowship and fun. Please RSVP to Charles Sullivan

Join Women's Bible Study on Tuesdays at 12:30 pm. We are discussing the book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, by Barbara Brown Taylor. Come when you can; bring your lunch or a snack, if you would like. Note that we will meet in the Youth Center thru July 7th. If you have questions or want to be included on our email distribution list, please contact Pastor Christine.

Church Use Announcement: During the Summer months, Mad Science summer camp, will be renting our Fellowship Hall Monday-Friday 8am-6pm for 6/15-7/10 and 8/3-8/7. During that time, the Youth Center will be available for church meetings and events.

A Prayer Writing Workshop will be held on Sunday, June 28 at 11:00 am

in the Fellowship Hall. This workshop will cover tips for composing intercessory prayers to be read in church, such as linking prayers to the scriptures of the day, what to pray for, and what constitutes corporate prayer. You do not need to be a Prayer Writer for church to attend, but if you are a Prayer Writer or would like to be, you are encouraged to come. Please see Pr. Steve or Pr. Christine if you have questions.

Save the Date: Sunday, July 12th, after the 10am service, we will be Celebrating Chris Schaefer! Chris is completing his time as our Youth & Family Minister and kicking off a whirlwind tour of new adventures this summer with CPE, his marriage, and then his teaching parish rotation for seminary. Mark your calendars and plan on celebrating with us all that Chris has given to Prince of Peace. More details coming soon...

The Annual June Festival at Pleasant View Historical Site (right next door to PoP) will be held Saturday, June 27, at 1:00 pm. The Pleasant View site (11810 Darnestown Rd) houses three original structures that all date back to the late nineteenth century: Pleasant View Methodist Episcopal Church, Pleasant View Cemetery and Quince Orchard Colored School. The historic church and school buildings will be open to tour. Come for an afternoon of food, music, fellowship, information, and fun!

Cuba Mission Trip! On June 13 a group of nine folks from Prince of Peace (including Pastor Christine and her father) traveled to Cuba on a cultural immersion and faith formation adventure, talking to and serving with pastors in Cuba. They are looking forward to sharing their learnings and encounters with God with the congregation.

The Saturday service on July 4th has been cancelled.

Enjoy your 4th of July Celebration and join us Sunday morning at 8:30 or 10:00 am.

Enjoy fresh flowers on the Altar? We still have an opening on July 5th. Flowers may be given in memory or honor of a person or special occasion. A donation of $30 covers the flowers for a week, and they are yours to take home after the late service. Contact the Office or sign up in the narthex.

Our Saturday Dinners Out after the Saturday service have been great fun! Mark your calendar for the next meet-up Saturday, July 18 around 6:15 pm at Chipotle in the Kentlands. We look forward to spending time together in a casual environment. All are welcome!

The Serving in Worship schedule for June & July has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts.

Thank you to all who are contributing to our Capital Campaign! All donations will make an important difference! We especially want to thank those who have signed authorizations to transfer their Capital Campaign donations to the Debt Reduction Fund in order to reduce our mortgage. So far, we've received authorizations from about 60% our donors, representing more than 78% of the contributions. We invite others to join in this effort by filling out an authorization form if you've donated to the Capital Campaign, or by making a donation to the Debt Reduction Fund. Watch for more updates!

You Made a Difference! Thanks to your generous contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund, we were able to pay an additional $9,917 on our mortgage principal with our June payment. This enabled us to reduce our current loan balance to $572,629. Because of those who have authorized their Capital Campaign contributions to be transferred to the Debt Reduction Fund, we also expect to make a major principal payment in July. Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who helped with our Yard Sale and especially Elizabeth Cockerham and Joan Kowalik for their leadership! We enjoyed food, fellowship, and a great time shopping for bargains. Many items not sold were donated to Wider Circle, LSS, Goodwill, and other community organizations. We expect to net around $14,000! If you haven't paid your tab yet, the box is on the credenza in the narthex. Please mark your check "Yard Sale" and place in the offering plate.

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!

Brochures are available online and in the narthex. Contact Pastor Steve for more info.

ELCA Disaster Response is helping people affected by the spring storms and flooding in the US. Visit the ELCA Disaster Response webpage (http://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Relief-and-Development/Lutheran-Disaster-Response) to donate or learn more about how you can help.

Fruitful Fields, the Prince of Peace Community Garden, has fenced-in plots ready for your favorite herbs, vegetables and flowers. It is, also, in need of Lowe's or Home Depot Gift Cards to buy lumber and hardware for fence and gate repairs, tools and equipment to make the gardens more successful. If you can support the garden in this way, please leave your donation in the church office labeled "Fruitful Fields." For more info or to help, contact Marybeth Stockman.
