This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Second Sunday after Pentecost                             June 7, 2015

This Sunday's Readings

Genesis 3:8-15; Psalm 130; 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1

GOSPEL:  Mark 3:20-35

The crowd came together again, so that Jesus and his disciples could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, "He has gone out of his mind." And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons." And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin" - for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit."

Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and

called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you." And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."

Thanks to everyone who helped with our Yard Sale and especially Elizabeth Cockerham and Joan Kowalik for their leadership! We enjoyed food, fellowship, and a great time shopping for bargains. Many items not sold were donated to Wider Circle, LSS, Goodwill, and other community organizations. We expect to net around $14,000! If you haven't paid your tab yet, the box is on the credenza in the narthex. Please mark your check "Yard Sale" and place in the offering plate.

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 27-31. This year's theme is "Everest - Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power". VBS is always a lot of fun for current members and a great way to attract new families as well. We still need helpers! Please signup in the narthex or contact Lori Kohne. VBS is for children ages 3 (potty trained) through entering 5th grade. Registration forms are on the PoP website and in the narthex. Registration fee is $50 per participant with a max of $150 per family. Each family will receive a CD of the VBS music and a T-shirt for each child. Need based scholarships are available. We usually fill very quickly so get your registration form in early. We hope you can join us and tell your friends too. See you on the mountain!

Exploring Faith - Pick up and read the book, "Wanted: A Spiritual Pursuit Through Jail, Among Outlaws, and Across Borders" (available in bookstores or order online) and join us Wednesday, June 10 for a casual evening of fellowship, food, and conversation. A 'sandwich bar' will be available beginning at 6:30pm with all the fixins and discussion will begin at 7pm. Come whenever you are able. The book follows a restless young man as he finds God and spirituality while volunteering as a night shift chaplain at a men's correctional facility.

Saturday Evening Service Go-ers! Looking to join other Saturday attenders for dinner out? Approximately once a month we would like to hang out at a local eatery for good food and fellowship after the 5pm Saturday evening service. A different dinner destination will be chosen each month in hopes to offer a variety for all. The next meet-up will be Saturday, June 13 around 6:15 pm at Noodles & Co. in the Kentlands. We look forward to spending time (and eating!) together in a casual environment. All are welcome!

Cuba Mission Trip! On June 13 a group of nine folks from Prince of Peace (including Pastor Christine and her father) will be traveling to Cuba on a cultural immersion and faith formation adventure. They will be talking to and serving with pastors in Cuba. Please pray for them, the country of Cuba, and all those they meet while they are traveling. They are looking forward to sharing their learnings and encounters with God with the congregation when they return.

Evening Bible Study This Summer! A three-session adult evening Bible Study will be held during the summer on the third Monday evening each month (June 15, July 20, & August 17) from 7:00-8:00pm. We will meet in the sanctuary to study the Bible and how we can put His Word into practice in our everyday lives. (You do not need to attend all 3 sessions - come as you are able!) Topics will include abiding with God, mirroring His Son, and being led by the Holy Spirit. We look forward to spending time discussing these topics as a group in order to live out our life's purpose! Bring a Bible and beverage if you wish, light refreshments will be provided. Questions can be directed to Sherry Kienzle.

Come and "get wild" with the playgroup in June! On Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 am, we'll meet at Meadowside Nature Center to see the raptors outside and some of the bugs and snakes inside as well! The center is located at 5100 Meadowside Lane (in Rock Creek Regional Park) in Rockville. See http://www.montgomeryparks.org/nature_centers/meadow/index.shtm for additional information. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie  or Lauren  with any questions!

A Prayer Writing Workshop will be held on Sunday, June 28 at 11:00 am in the Fellowship Hall. This workshop will cover tips for composing intercessory prayers to be read in church, such as linking prayers to the scriptures of the day, what to pray for, and what constitutes corporate prayer. You do not need to be a Prayer Writer for church to attend, but if you are a Prayer Writer or would like to be, you are encouraged to come. Please see Pr. Steve or Pr. Christine if you have questions.

Save the Date: Sunday, July 12th, after the 10am service, we will be Celebrating Chris Schaefer! Chris is completing his time as our Youth & Family Minister and kicking off a whirlwind tour of new adventures this summer with CPE, his marriage, and then his teaching parish rotation for seminary. Mark your calendars and plan on celebrating with us all that Chris has given to Prince of Peace. More details coming soon...

Eat Out for Gaithersburg HELP! ~ On Tuesday, June 16, Dogfish Head Alehouse (800 West Diamond Ave, Gaithersburg) will donate 15% of ALL SALES (food, beverages, merchandise, gift cards, etc.) from both Dine In and Take Out orders to Gaithersburg HELP. Funds raised on that day will be used to directly support all of HELP's programs, including the pantry, infant needs, prescription and transportation.

To wrap up the year on a fun note before summer vacation, the Men's Book Club will discuss The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, DC, the work relies on Freemasonry for both its recurring theme and its major characters. Join us at 7:30 pm Thursday, June 18. All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited for fellowship and fun. Please RSVP to Charles Sullivan.

Join Women's Bible Study on Tuesdays at 12:30pm. We are discussing the book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, by Barbara Brown Taylor. This book explores our tendency to associate 'good' with 'light' and 'evil' with 'dark'. The overarching question the book addresses is: Doesn't God work in the dark as well? The author shares personal experiences and also tackles the differences between faith and belief, certainty and trust. In short, this is a great book for anyone who has had doubts, felt alone in the dark, or wondered about the role of God in hard times. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Christine. This is a great time to join this open and fluid group. We base our meetings around the joy of coming together over the word of God. Come when you can; bring your lunch or a snack, if you would like. If you have questions or want to be included on our email distribution list, please contact Pastor Christine.  (Class will not be held on June 16.)

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016!

Brochures are available online and in the narthex. Contact Pastor Steve for more info.

Church Use Announcement: During the Summer months, Mad Science summer camp, will be renting our Fellowship Hall Monday-Friday 8am-6pm for 6/15-7/10 and 8/3-8/7.

During that time, the Youth Center will be available for church meetings and events.

Thank you to all who are contributing to our Capital Campaign! All donations will make an important difference! We especially want to thank those who have signed authorizations to transfer their Capital Campaign donations to the Debt Reduction Fund in order to reduce our mortgage. So far, we've received authorizations from about half our donors, representing more than 70% of the contributions. We invite others to join in this effort by filling out an authorization form if you've donated to the Capital Campaign, or by making a donation to the Debt Reduction Fund. Watch for more updates!

You Made a Difference! Thanks to your generous contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund, we were able to pay an additional $1,325 on our mortgage principal with our May payment. This enabled us to retire a total of $4,225 in principal. Thank you!

The Serving in Worship schedule for May & June has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts.

Fruitful Fields, the Prince of Peace Community Garden, has fenced-in plots ready for your favorite herbs, vegetables and flowers. It is, also, in need of Lowe's or Home Depot Gift Cards to buy lumber and hardware for fence and gate repairs, tools and equipment to make the gardens more successful. If you can support the garden in this way, please leave your donation in the church office labeled "Fruitful Fields." For more info or to help, contact Marybeth Stockman.

VolunteerSpot is our new way to stay informed and sign up for volunteer opportunities at Prince of Peace. An email is sent for each need, as it is identified. The message contains a link that makes it easy to add your name as a helper. Here are our current volunteer requests:
