This Week at Prince of Peace...

Holy Trinity Sunday                                                 May 31, 2015

This Sunday's Readings

Isaiah 6:1-8; Psalm 29; Romans 8:12-17

GOSPEL:  John 3:1-17

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

2015 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN -- All In for Prince of Peace

Current Focus: CARING FOR AND SERVING OTHERS.

Wasn't it a great Blessing to see new faces join this wonderful Community of Faith we call Prince of Peace!!

As I reflected on what a Blessing this church has been to Deborah and me, I realize that the fellowship we share is a big part of our effort to Care For and Serve Others. I am so pleased that somehow we collectively connected with these households and they have decided to join us and add to our amazing diverse set of members with so many unique talents.

Another symbol of this pillar of our mission is the Annual Yard Sale. This event reaches and touches more members of our community every year than any other single event. Sign-Ups are in progress and there is lots more about that elsewhere, but don't miss the fact that all the effort goes toward something that allows us to have some fun, raise some money, but most importantly, make a difference in a number of people's lives. Isn't that what this pillar is really all about?

And, in a similar vein, our recent effort to have individuals join the Auxiliary for the Village at Rockville is just one more way that our congregation works to Care For and Serve Others in our Community.

Finally, with the focus on eliminating our current mortgage, now is a GREAT TIME to add your name to the list of those that have committed to being All In for Prince of Peace. Just fill out a Blue Card (it takes less than a minute) and drop it in the box. Or, talk to Chuck Dixon and he'll make sure your support of our Mission is recorded.

 ***********************

Our Yard Sale is this Saturday, May 30th! Come and bring your friends for a great time of food, fun and of course, great bargains! We can still use help before and during the sale, so it's not too late to come by and join in the fun! This is always a great way to have fun together as a congregation and to meet and serve our community.

The Derek Sheely LEAD THE WAY 4.0-Mile Run and 1-Mile Walk is on Saturday, May 30 at 8:00 am at Northwest High School in Germantown. Help increase awareness of concussions and support advancements in education, prevention, and treatment of traumatic brain injuries. To register or donate, visit www.thedereksheelyfoundation.org. To volunteer, please email Kristen Sheely.

Thank you to all who are contributing to our Capital Campaign! All donations will make an important difference! We especially want to thank those who have signed authorizations to transfer their Capital Campaign donations to the Debt Reduction Fund in order to reduce our mortgage. So far, we've received authorizations from about half our donors, representing more than 70% of the contributions. We invite others to join in this effort by filling out an authorization form if you've donated to the Capital Campaign, or by making a donation to the Debt Reduction Fund. Watch for more updates!

The Social Ministry Team needs your input! Help us identify which activities and areas of ministry you feel called to support by filling out the survey at church or by clicking here for the online version. It should only take 5 minutes!

The Serving in Worship schedule for May & June has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts.

On June 2 at 12:30pm, the Women's Bible study will begin discussing the book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, by Barbara Brown Taylor (Chapters 1 and 2). This book explores our tendency to associate 'good' with 'light' and 'evil' with 'dark'. The overarching question the book addresses is: Doesn't God work in the dark as well? The author shares personal experiences and also tackles the differences between faith and belief, certainty and trust. In short, this is a great book for anyone who has had doubts, felt alone in the dark, or wondered about the role of God in hard times. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Christine. This is a great time to join this open and fluid group. We base our meetings around the joy of coming together over the word of God. Come when you can; bring your lunch or a snack, if you would like. If you have questions or want to be included on our email distribution list, please contact Pastor Christine.

Exploring Faith - Pick up and read the book, "Wanted: A Spiritual Pursuit Through Jail, Among Outlaws, and Across Borders" (available in bookstores or order online) and join us Wednesday, June 10 for a casual evening of fellowship, food, and conversation. A 'sandwich bar' will be available beginning at 6:30pm with all the fixins and discussion will begin at 7pm. Come whenever you are able. The book follows a restless young man as he finds God and spirituality while volunteering as a night shift chaplain at a men's correctional facility.

Evening Bible Study This Summer! A three-session adult evening Bible Study will be held during the summer on the third Monday evening each month (June 15, July 20, & August 17) from 7:00-8:00pm. We will meet in the sanctuary to study the Bible and how we can put His Word into practice in our everyday lives. (You do not need to attend all 3 sessions - come as you are able!) Topics will include abiding with God, mirroring His Son, and being led by the Holy Spirit. We look forward to spending time discussing these topics as a group in order to live out our life's purpose! Bring a Bible and beverage if you wish, light refreshments will be provided. Questions can be directed to Sherry Kienzle.

Church Use Announcement: During the Summer months, Mad Science summer camp, will be renting our Fellowship Hall Monday-Friday 8am-6pm for 6/15-7/10 and 8/3-8/7. During that time, the Youth Center will be available for church meetings and events.

Saturday Evening Service Go-ers! Looking to join other Saturday attenders for dinner out? Approximately once a month we would like to hang out at a local eatery for good food and fellowship after the 5pm Saturday evening service. A different dinner destination will be chosen each month in hopes to offer a variety for all. The next meet-up will be Saturday, June 13 around 6:15 pm at Noodles & Co. in the Kentlands. We look forward to spending time (and eating!) together in a casual environment. All are welcome!

Come and "get wild" with the playgroup in June! On Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 am, we'll meet at Meadowside Nature Center to see the raptors outside and some of the bugs and snakes inside as well! The center is located at 5100 Meadowside Lane (in Rock Creek Regional Park) in Rockville. See http://www.montgomeryparks.org/nature_centers/meadow/index.shtm for additional information. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie  or Lauren  with any questions!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 27-31.This year's theme is "Everest - Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power". VBS is always a lot of fun for current members and a great way to attract new families as well. If you are interested in helping with VBS, please signup in the narthex or contact Lori Kohne. We hope you can join us and tell your friends too. Registration forms will be available in early June. See you on the mountain!

Save the Date: Sunday, July 12th, after the 10am service, we will be Celebrating Chris Schaefer! Chris is completing his time as our Youth & Family Minister and kicking off a whirlwind tour of new adventures this summer with CPE, his marriage, and then his teaching parish rotation for seminary. Mark your calendars and plan on celebrating with us all that Chris has given to Prince of Peace. More details coming soon...

Funds raised on that day will be used to directly support all of HELP's programs, including the pantry, infant needs, prescription and transportation.

To wrap up the year on a fun note before summer vacation, the Men's Book Club will discuss The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, DC, the work relies on Freemasonry for both its recurring theme and its major characters. Join us at 7:30 pm Thursday, June 18. All men of PoP and their male friends are cordially invited for fellowship and fun. Please RSVP to Charles Sullivan.
