This Week at Prince of Peace...

The Day of Pentecost                                                  May 24, 2015

This Sunday's Readings

Ezekiel 37:1-14; Psalm 104:24-34, 35b; Acts 2:1-21

GOSPEL:  John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

Jesus said, When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

YARD SALE: Saturday, May 30 from 7am - 2pm!

Time to clean out garages, attics, basements and get ready for our annual Yard Sale. We need everyone in the congregation to help make the Yard Sale a success and there are lots of ways to get involved and have fun!

Yard Sale Prep Kick-Off Sunday on May 24!

There will be only ONE Sunday morning worship service on May 24 at 10 am followed by a BBQ and set-up for the Yard Sale. We hope everyone can come prepared to worship, eat and enjoy fellowship, and then stay for a little while to help with initial setup! During the week, we also encourage folks to come by anytime between 10am - 9pm to help sort and price. We'll also have the grill set up so that you can eat if you come during the dinner hour.

WE STILL NEED:

Department Chairs & Assistants - Please sign up in the narthex!!

Help on Yard Sale Day - Sign up in the narthex for one shift or many! We especially need help with Cleanup 2-4pm on Saturday, sign up online or in the narthex.

Truck Volunteers to help pickup donations - Sign up online or in the narthex for days/times you are available (Sunday, Monday, Tues-Fri 6-9pm).

Food to Serve at the Yard Sale - Sign up on the Food Donations List in the narthex. Donuts, hamburgers, & hot dogs are especially needed.

Donated Goods - We will be accepting donations starting Sunday, May 24 at 1pm and continuing thru Thursday 9am-9pm each day.

Large Boxes - needed for Clothing departments (Fellowship Hall).

This is our opportunity to provide low cost goods to people in our community who are in need; to recycle and re-use as part of our commitment to good environmental stewardship and to give proceeds and donated items to organizations in our community which help those who are struggling. Let the purging begin!

VolunteerSpot is our new way to stay informed and sign up for volunteer opportunities at Prince of Peace. An email is sent for each need, as it is identified. The message contains a link that makes it easy to add your name as a helper. Here are our current volunteer requests:

Volunteer Need

Yard Sale Volunteers  (Truck Drivers and Loaders)

2015 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN -- All In for Prince of Peace

Current Focus: CARING FOR AND SERVING OTHERS.

Wasn't it a great Blessing to see new faces join this wonderful Community of Faith we call Prince of Peace!!

As I reflected on what a Blessing this church has been to Deborah and me, I realize that the fellowship we share is a big part of our effort to Care For and Serve Others. I am so pleased that somehow we collectively connected with these households and they have decided to join us and add to our amazing diverse set of members with so many unique talents.

Another symbol of this pillar of our mission is the Annual Yard Sale. This event reaches and touches more members of our community every year than any other single event. Sign-Ups are in progress and there is lots more about that elsewhere, but don't miss the fact that all the effort goes toward something that allows us to have some fun, raise some money, but most importantly, make a difference in a number of people's lives. Isn't that what this pillar is really all about?

And, in a similar vein, our recent effort to have individuals join the Auxiliary for the Village at Rockville is just one more way that our congregation works to Care For and Serve Others in our Community.

Finally, with the focus on eliminating our current mortgage, now is a GREAT TIME to add your name to the list of those in the Narthex that have committed to being All In for Prince of Peace. Just fill out a Blue Card (it takes less than a minute) and drop it in the box. Or, talk to Chuck Dixon and he'll make sure your support of our Mission is recorded.

Thank you to all who are contributing to our Capital Campaign! All donations will make an important difference! We especially want to thank those who have signed authorizations to transfer their Capital Campaign donations to the Debt Reduction Fund in order to reduce our mortgage. So far, we've received authorizations from about half our donors, representing more than 70% of the contributions. We invite others to join in this effort by filling out an authorization form if you've donated to the Capital Campaign, or by making a donation to the Debt Reduction Fund. Watch for more updates!

The Social Ministry Team needs your input! Help us identify which activities and areas of ministry you feel called to support by filling out the survey at church or by clicking here for the online version. It should only take 5 minutes!

Final Weeks for 100% Wind Electricity Spring Group Purchase. Now is the time to review the winning proposals received by Groundswell and decide whether to participate. The Serving in Worship schedule for May & June has been posted on our website and the bulletin board in the narthex. Please review it and make arrangements for any conflicts.

On June 2 at 12:30pm, the Women's Bible study will begin discussing the book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, by Barbara Brown Taylor (Chapters 1 and 2). This book explores our tendency to associate 'good' with 'light' and 'evil' with 'dark'. The overarching question the book addresses is: Doesn't God work in the dark as well? The author shares personal experiences and also tackles the differences between faith and belief, certainty and trust. In short, this is a great book for anyone who has had doubts, felt alone in the dark, or wondered about the role of God in hard times. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Christine. This is a great time to join this open and fluid group. We base our meetings around the joy of coming together over the word of God. Come when you can; bring your lunch or a snack, if you would like. If you have questions or want to be included on our email distribution list, please contact Pastor Christine.

Exploring Faith - Pick up and read the book, "Wanted: A Spiritual Pursuit Through Jail, Among Outlaws, and Across Borders" (available in bookstores or order online) and join us Wednesday, June 10 for a casual evening of fellowship, food, and conversation. A 'sandwich bar' will be available beginning at 6:30pm with all the fixins and discussion will begin at 7pm. Come whenever you are able. The book follows a restless young man as he finds God and spirituality while volunteering as a night shift chaplain at a men's correctional facility.

Evening Bible Study This Summer! A three-session adult evening Bible Study will be held during the summer on the third Monday evening each month (June 15, July 20, & August 17) from 7:00-8:00pm. We will meet in the sanctuary to study the Bible and how we can put His Word into practice in our everyday lives. (You do not need to attend all 3 sessions - come as you are able!) Topics will include abiding with God, mirroring His Son, and being led by the Holy Spirit. We look forward to spending time discussing these topics as a group in order to live out our life's purpose! Bring a Bible and beverage if you wish, light refreshments will be provided. Questions can be directed to Sherry Kienzle.

Saturday Evening Service Go-ers! Looking to join other Saturday attenders for dinner out? Approximately once a month we would like to hang out at a local eatery for good food and fellowship after the 5pm Saturday evening service. A different dinner destination will be chosen each month in hopes to offer a variety for all. The next meet-up will be Saturday, June 13 around 6:15 pm at Noodles & Co. in the Kentlands. We look forward to spending time (and eating!) together in a casual environment. All are welcome!

Come and "get wild" with the playgroup in June! On Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 am, we'll meet at Meadowside Nature Center to see the raptors outside and some of the bugs and snakes inside at well! The center is located at 5100 Meadowside Lane (in Rock Creek Regional Park) in Rockville. See http://www.montgomeryparks.org/nature_centers/meadow/index.shtm for additional information. PoP Playgroup is a great way for families and their babies/toddlers/preschoolers to connect with each other. Please contact Jamie  or Lauren  with any questions!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 27-31. This year's theme is "Everest - Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power". VBS is always a lot of fun for current members and a great way to attract new families as well. If you are interested in helping with VBS, please signup in the narthex or contact Lori Kohne. We hope you can join us and tell your friends too. Registration forms will be available in early June. See you on the mountain!

Pastor Steve will be leading a trip to the Holy Land in September of 2016! Brochures are available online and in the narthex. Contact Pastor Steve for more info.

You Made a Difference! Thanks to your generous contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund, we were able to pay an additional $1,325 on our mortgage principal with our May payment. This enabled us to retire a total of $4,225 in principal. Thank you!

All plots were recently renewed with compost and are ready to be tilled. If you have been contemplating growing more of your own food, here is your chance. The gardens are located behind the Besecker Center, individual plots surround the three central plots in which food is grown for Gaithersburg HELP. Signup sheet for individual plots is in the narthex. We also need help watering, weeding and harvesting produce for donation. For more info or to help contact Marybeth Stockman.

Fruitful Fields, the PoP Community Garden, is in need of Lowe's/Home Depot Gift Cards
to buy lumber and hardware for fence and gate repairs, tools and equipment to make the gardens more successful. The gardens are used to grow produce, part of which is donated to Gaithersburg HELP. If you can support the garden in this way, please leave your donation in the church office labeled "Fruitful Fields."
