Please do NOT park in the parking lot next to the school. We ask that you do NOT park on the side of the lawn - this makes is difficult for buses and big delivery trucks to pass carefully.
Do NOT park on the Five Mile Line Road in front of the school. Proceed to the BACK of the school parking lot and WAIT for the buses to leave first.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION with these safety rules and the ones below.
IF A CHILD DOES NOT HAVE A WRITTEN NOTE FROM HOME OR A PARENT DOES NOT CALL THE MAIN OFFICE CONFIRMING A STUDENT IS BEING PICKED UP -
THEY WILL BE PLACED ON THEIR BUS TO GO HOME
DO NOT PARK IN THE NEIGHBORING BUSINESS PARKING LOTS - STUDENTS ARE NOT TO WALK ACROSS THE DRIVEWAY BETWEEN BUSES - DO NOT PARK ON FIVE MILE LINE ROAD IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL FOR PICK-UP!
STUDENTS RELEASED FOR EARLY DISMISSAL MUST BE PICKED UP AND SIGNED OUT AT THE MAIN OFFICE - THEY MUST BRING A NOTE IN TO THE MAIN OFFICE IN THE MORNING AND GIVE IT TO MRS. MOODY - SHE WILL THEN GIVE THEM A PASS TO BE RELEASED FROM CLASS AT THE TIME OF THEIR EARLY DEPARTURE

If one car at a time stops at the beginning of the circle or even right in front of the front door it congests and backs up buses and other parents.

Reflections on Italy Trip
| |
I just wanted to share with you the experience that we had during our trip to Italy over the summer! What an amazing experience! The trip members included 4 Seniors-Kelly O'Brien, Mike DiPonzio, Lauren Ritze, and Phoebe Holmsten, 1 Junior-Emelia Spoelhof and 2 Sophomores- Paul Warner & Cassie VanOrsdale, 1 6 th Grader-Sylvia Fioravanti, and 4 Adults-Myself, Paul Fioravanti, CarolAnn Warner, and my mother. It truly was an amazing experience. The students saw amazing sights, ate amazing foods, saw amazing artwork from many famous artists such as Michelangelo, ate gelato on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, walked where the Romans walked in the Colosseum, rode on a gondola in Venice, and went to Milan, Venice, Florence, Assisi, and Rome during their 9 days in Italy. Take a look at the Shutterfly site that I created to take a peek into what we saw and experienced during our stay. I could go on and on but pictures can say more than I ever could. Check it out!

From the President
Dear Parents,
I am not sure I have ever entered a new school year with such great anticipation and excitement...and...with a little stress thrown in the mix. We have so much to be thankful for here that The Charles Finney School. The school has been abundantly blessed by such generous donors, incredible families and a wonderful faculty and staff ready to serve.
If you have been around the facility at all lately you have noticed some big changes that have taken place outside of the building. The repaving of the parking lot and the renovation of the back door entrance top the list in this area. Inside the building other projects such as a completely renovated general music room, new K-8 computer lab, replacement of all elementary classroom desks and chairs, new drinking fountains, new high school English room, and a variety of other smaller interior projects led the way this summer. We also have added several positions to help meet the needs of the academic and business sides of the school. A new high school position was created to teach English (last January we hired additional faculty to teach History). We also expanded the Media Center position to full-time and hired part-time employees in the business office and in the area of marketing. In the middle of all of this we have continued to push toward accreditation. The Finney School has been a busy place this summer. Our vision is to become the leader in Christian K-12 education. The faculty and staff are committed to seeing this vision become a reality. Of course none of this is possible without the commitment of wonderful dedicated parents like the ones who make up the community of our school. Our enrollment continues to grow, but we still need each of you to share your story with others in your circles and beyond. Each of you has a unique perspective of how Finney has impacted your children and family. I would love to hear and share that story with others. Please contact me if you are willing to share your story as we are making plans now for the new enrollment season in January. For all of you who are new to Finney this year... WELCOME! I look forward to getting to know
you and your children. Please pray for the new school year and know that our faculty and staff are praying for you.
In His Service,
Mr. Michael VanLeeuwen
President

 | From the High School Principal |
Summer has come to a close and fall is just around the corner. I hope you are as excited as I am for yet another great school year! Welcome back to all our returning students! To our new students, we are so glad you have chosen Finney, and we welcome you to the family!
~New Hires in the High School~ We have hired Mr. Ryan Hackett as a long-term substitute for this year. (English 11, English 12, College and Career and SAT Prep) We have also hired a Global History teacher, Miss Amanda Prestigiacomo. Please join me in welcoming them to Finney! We are thankful they have decided to join our family. Please be praying for them and our students as we adjust to the last minute changes and start the year strong!
~New This Year~
For students who would like a preview of the New PSAT, please visit www.kaptest.com/psatsneakpeek. The 10th grade test, formerly known as the "PLAN" test has been replaced with a comparable test called "EDSeries" (Educational Development Series). The EDSeries (10th) and the PSAT (11th) will be given on Wednesday, October 14,2015. Detailed information such as pricing and test times will be sent home in late September.
There is a slight change to the HS daily schedule. The electives/Chapel period formerly held during P3 will now be held during P7. Chapels will now be P7 on Thursdays for the Middle School and High School.
High School curriculum night will be held on its own evening this year to accommodate families that have students in multiple grade levels. Save the date: Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 6:30-8:00 PM. ~Parent/Student Handbook~ There have been some slight modifications and a few additions to the handbook. Please be sure to read it carefully! We appreciate everyone's support as we help to make our school a safe learning environment.
~Music Department~ Awesome changes continue to happen in the music department. Thank you to all who have helped support the state of the art renovations in the music room! Be sure to stop in and check it out!
~Don't Forget!~ There are "No Gum" signs posted all over the building. Due to damage to the new gym floor, a decision was made to ban gum from the school campus. We want to be good stewards of this building God has blessed us with. So, please remember, no gum, at all, on school campus! Cell phones, IPads, and IPods (all electronic devices) must remain off during the school day. Students are asked to turn them off and leave them in their book bag, or locked in their lockers so as to avoid the temptation of checking a message or sending a text. There may be a rare occasion that a teacher will allow use in class for educational purposes.
~Contact Information~ If you have not met me yet, feel free to call me (387-3770 X236) or email me (alyon@finneyschool.org) to set up a time to talk! It is such a blessing getting to know the high school students and their families.

Labor Day Weekend is a sure sign that summer is coming to an end. The children and their teachers will soon be settling into a new school year. It always amazes me how the children grow and change in so many ways when they return to school after summer vacation. We look forward to another wonderful school year.
Administrators and teachers recognize the important contributions parents make toward a child's success in school. There is no question about it -success at school begins at home. Parents model both a silent and spoken language in front of their children daily.
One of the most important components of a good school is the partnership between the school and parents who work together for the best interest of children. The close partnership between home and school is one strength at Charles Finney.
As we begin a new school year, we find teachers establishing school standards and rules. In the most successful classrooms, teachers have established specific routines for the children to follow. This means giving the children a specific place to find and keep material, a set schedule for classroom instruction, etc.
At home, it is important to provide routines. Many families build a daily "quiet time" when the television is turned off. The routine of a daily quiet time provides an opportunity to develop self-discipline, stimulate imagination, and enhance reading skills.

| From the Director of Development |
Most think that spring is the season of fresh beginnings, but WE know that it is fall that brings our students renewed with eager hearts, hungry minds, and optimistic hope for new successes in the months ahead. It is with joy and prayer that I look forward to the 2015-16 school year - my first year with the Finney family!
We have been busy planning Homecoming, which brings families together, old friends back to their alma mater, a showcase of accomplished student athletes, delicious food, excitement around the enhancement to the grounds, and some surprises! We are excited to partner with Henderson Ford this year in the Drive 4UR School event. Henderson Ford will make a donation to the school for every driver who takes a spin in one of their cars, featured on our campus. Who wouldn't like to cruise in a new Ford Mustang!
Homecoming serves as a fitting launch for our fundraising season. As we work together, sharing our gifts and pooling our energy, please be prayerful about the giving opportunities that, in the past year, have provided school enhancements and scholarships that represent the passionate character of the Finney community.
"As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."
1 Peter 4:10
Blessings to all,

 | The Chaplain's Corner | Dear Finney Parents, It's that time of year again! I sit here in anticipation of the incredible blessings that lie ahead this year at Finney! Once again ... I have been afforded the incredible opportunity and privilege to serve the student body and staff at The Finney School as Chaplain! This is my 9th year as Chaplain! As the 2015-16 school year begins, there will be new challenges ... and we WILL overcome them! We will also celebrate new victories! During the last several years ... it has been my mission to teach and guide the students in such a way that they would embrace Finney as much more than a great educational institution ... because ... Finney IS Family! We have an extremely unique community that flourishes here at Finney! We enjoy a unique blend of 'mind' ... 'heart' and 'spirit'! With the new International presence on campus, our student body is more than ever ... a melting pot of various backgrounds! Each member of the Finney Family enjoys an environment that fosters learning! Finney family members encourage each other in Christian love! The plethora of backgrounds, heritages and traditions set the stage to pave new roads for fellowship and enlightenment for each student! Anyone visiting our school witnesses both diversity and brotherhood dwelling in the hearts of the Finney family! My true joy is in knowing that our faith in Christ Jesus links us all together! Chapel time at Finney is our family's time to worship, fellowship and to receive relevant encouragement in Biblical truth! Chapel is a time for us to gather as a family, (students and faculty alike), for spiritual refreshment! My personal focus and desire in weekly Chapel is to challenge our children to explore opportunities to grow in their Christian faith ... both inside and outside the classroom! For all the new families ... let me assure you that as Chaplain that I am deeply concerned about the spiritual life of our student body!
I am the Senior Pastor of Oasis Christian Fellowship, which has co-inhabited the Finney building for about 6 years! For those of you that do not have a family church ... I personally invite you to join the Oasis as part of our family until such time that the Lord plants you where you need to be! We have packets with information about Oasis on the info table located on the second floor near the water fountain! We have troop of American Heritage Girls that meets here on Wednesday Nights for girls of all ages! We are also initiating the groundwork to begin a troop of Trail Life for the boys which will meet at the same time! We have an adult Bible Study that meets at the same time to give the parents something positive to engage in! The STAND is a group of college and career people meeting on Wednesday nights for those 18-30 years of age! This is under the direction of Rollin White of The Oasis! The STAND meets here at Finney at 7:30pm on Thursday nights! WE also have a Men's ministry called The Torch that meets on Thursdays ... and a Women's ministry called The Light that meets on Tuesday nights. I bring this up only to enhance your family's Finney experience. Involvement in any OASIS ministry does NOT require joining Oasis! Instead our focus is to encourage everyone to find and become involved in a local or family church! The main component of my duties as Finney's Chaplain is to serve as the campus pastor and I heartily and consistently encourage students to be actively involved in their local church or family church! As Chaplain, I desire the opportunity get to know every student, personally. We began a program two years ago to equip and disciple Student Chaplains. I meet with the high school Student Chaplains regularly to enhance the academic experience for them and those they in turn minister to! We have freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior Student Chaplains. My office door is always open for any student that needs Biblical help or direction! I meet with students to seek support and encouragement through prayer, fellowship and accountability. As I embark on this 9th year as the Finney Chaplain ... I continue to be overwhelmed by the encouragement, support and love that has been expressed by the students and staff! Please continue to cover the Finney Family in your prayers because after all ... you are PART OF IT! Amen! In His Grip,
Pastor Samme Palermo
Chaplain, Charles Finney School
Sr. Pastor, Oasis Christian Fellowship

PTO News

Welcome Finney families, teachers, students and staff to the 2015-2016 school year! We are excited about the new school year and have been busy preparing for it over the summer.
We began our PTO activities with the family cookout at Genesis Day on August 27th; we hope you had fun in the bounce house and inflatable joust pit. We enjoyed the delicious hamburgers and hot dogs, generously donated by Palmer's Foods. Then, what better way to end the day then with a scrumptious treat from Rita's!
The Falcon Spirit Run, our one and only fundraising event, will take place this month on September 22nd. The funds raised through this event will allow us to plan and oversee many activities and programs throughout the year including: four teacher and staff appreciation meals, the Spring Open House, family activities and games, the Parent Communications Rep program, and Parent Prayer group. The primary recipient of our fundraising efforts is the Christmas Blessing, a monetary gift given to bless our faculty and staff. We would love to add more exciting events and groups. Please consider volunteering, we are thankful for your ideas and your time.

SCHOOLMALL.COM
The holidays are fast approaching. While you are shopping on-line, please remember Finney's fundraising program called "School Mall". The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on-line store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores:Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help! **When you order your FINNEY UNIFORM pieces from Land's End we receive a portion of that purchase price as well! (You must purchase it THROUGH/VIA School Mall).
