A Special Thanks to Those Moving On.......

sheila roman

Mrs. Shelia Roman who has faithfully served the school over the past 3 years as Vice President of Advancement will be leaving us this summer. She had done a wonderful job in her role and will be missed. We wish her the very best as she seeks a new direction in her career.

We are also sad to report that Mr. Palmer has accepted a position in China. He and his wife Lisa have felt that the Lord was not done with them in regards to China, a country they lived in for two years prior to joining us at Finney.   Mr. Palmer helped so many of our students throughout this past year as our first official school counselor.

Thank you to Mrs. Roman and Mr. Palmer.  You will be greatly missed.

Praise for a successful school year.  Praise for a successful Day of Caring.  Praise for all of the ways God has blessed the Finney family this year.

Pray for our seniors as they start the next chapter in their lives.  Pray for a safe, relaxing, and renewing summer break.

Pray for our teachers, staff, and administration as they plan for a new year.

International Student Program

We are receiving many more inquiries from international students wanting to attend Finney in the fall. Please consider hosting a student in your home for part or all of the 2015-2016 school year. Here are a few quick details:

  • Students need their own room.
  • They love the idea of being with an American family
  • You get paid a stipend to host that helps offset their living expenses...... anywhere between $700-$900 a month depending on the agency
  • Part year options available if we have enough participation
  • Most importantly- you can help change a life! Speaking from personal experience it is a blessing to host a child

Please contact me directly if you have would like more information on being part of this wonderful opportunity.

Nurse's Update

sue wilson

Summertime is here....I can hear the music!  Hoping that everyone has a great summer.  There are a few things for fall that everyone needs to be aware of.  Big changes ahead that you need to know.  First is that if your child is entering the following grades; K, 2, 4, 7 and 10, he/she will need a physical turned into the nurses office by the end of September 2015.  NYS requires an updated physical on all children in the above grades.

In the field of athletics, the qualification standards are changing and will need to be STRICTLY enforced
NYSPHSAA rules state that "If a student in 7th and 8th grade for the 2014-2015 season played Varsity or JV sports they will be "grandfathered" in for the new qualification standards."  7th and 8th grade students new to JV and Varsity play for the 2015-2016 season will need to meet Tanner scores outlined in the selection/classification link found below, per their physician.   You can find the "Selection/Classification" requirements  on the Athletic section of the Finney Website - Boys:  (HERE) or for Girls: (HERE).

The new "Sports Permission Paperwork" is currently available on the website for Fall 2015.  However, you cannot file this paperwork until 30 days before your given sport begins.  There will be more about dates, etc. for qualification check lists in the July newsletter.

One more major change will be happening in NYS.  Some items that have freely been available will now require a MD signature as well as parent permission.  Such things as Vaseline, hand cream, salt for gargling.  We will have a general permission slip for these - and available on the website as well as sent out with the children requiring a physical (above).  Without these signed, your child will NOT be offered these at school. Please complete these and submit to the nurse as well as any other paperwork required.

Stay safe, get out and play with your children.  Run in the grass and watch the clouds float by!  Hope to see everyone in the fall!

Mrs. Sue Wilson, R.N.

Please join other Finney parents when we meet on Thursday mornings from 8:00 to 9:30am as we pray for our school, administration, faculty, staff and Finney families.  Come whenever you are able. You can also join our email group to receive prayer requests to pray at home.  Contact Kathy Smith at kathys0925@frontiernet.net  or

From the President

Dear Parents,

Change is in the air as we end another great school year at Finney. The most obvious change happens as our children complete one year and prepare for another. Our seniors have big changes ahead  as they close a chapter in their life called high school and enter a new one called.... well who knows. This is where each life begins to take on a very different  path. Whether it is college, military, or the work force it will look very different than it has the past four years.  On behalf of the entire faculty and staff I want to say a special thank you to all of the parents of our graduating seniors who entrusted their children to us.

Each summer also brings changes to schools like Finney. We have some exciting projects slated to begin this summer. We will continue to prepare for our site visit in the fall by the accreditation team. New faces will greet you in several positions in the fall. The planning and preparation  will continue as we strive toward our vision of; "The leader in independent Christian K-12 education, distinguished by excellence in program quality and student success". Together we WILL see this vision become a reality.

Change will and must happen as we  work  toward excellence. Please continue to pray over the summer for the Finney Board of Directors and others who lead in the various areas of the school. Each of us covets those prayers as we seek to make wise decisions that affect the entire Finney family and the future of the school. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

In His Service,

Mr. Michael VanLeeuwen
President
From the High School Principal

Congratulations to our graduates! This year's valedictorian honor goes to Jennifer Specht. Jennifer plans to attend Roberts Wesleyan College! The 2015 salutatorian honor goes to Meredith Thorpe. NEWS FLASH: SENIOR TRIP! Based on time constraints, cost concerns, interruption to instruction time, conflicts with sports, year book, senior chapel, and the musical, the Academic Committee has made a decision regarding future senior trips. Beginning next school year with the class of 2016, the senior trip will be held following graduation! This change comes with many benefits! To name a few: other schools are still in session, students can take a week-long trip and not miss instruction or finals review, the cost can be more reasonable depending on the destination, and students can enjoy one last group memory after graduation but before going their separate ways. Celebrate this positive change with us!

As we head off to enjoy the summer months and walk the path God has for us, let us remember Joshua 1:9 "...Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Galations 6:9 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Blessings for a great summer vacation!

Mrs. Aimee Lyon

High School Principal

From The K-8 Principal

Another successful school year is coming to an end! Reflecting on the past school year makes us realize how fortunate we are at Charles Finney. Our school has been successful due to the wonderful, collaborative partnership between students, staff members, and parents. Our students are meeting higher standards of performance due to the excellent teaching from our wonderful staff and the support from our parents. We must recognize our students for their perseverance, hard-work, and effort displayed throughout the school year.

I can't thank you enough for making my first year as the K-8 Principal so enjoyable. Your encouraging words and prayers help to make the year easier for me. Your support at my coffee hour put a smile on my face. I am asking you to keep me in your prayers over the summer months for God's wisdom for the 2015-2016 school year. I feel so blessed to be a part of the Finney Family.

Please enjoy the change of pace that the summer brings. Have a happy, relaxing, and safe summer with your children. We look forward to seeing everyone upon our return for the 2015-2016 school year for Orientation/Genesis Day on August 27th.

Blessings,

Mrs. Yvonne Paganelli

K-8 Principal

Development Office Update
sheila roman

Summer vacation is less than two weeks away!

Below is a "To-Do" list for the month of June.

  1. Make your gift to the Annual Appeal this year. The Annual Appeal is the school's number one fundraising priority.  It supports every aspect of a Finney education because it fills in the 'gap' between tuition and the cost of educating each student.  To date, we are $30,000 short of meeting this year's goal.  Your support is greatly needed! Consider donating any tuition dollars that you do not pay over the summer months.
  2. Distribute Finney's marketing brochure and school profile to a prospective family. These two new publications were sent to Finney families in early April. One of the best things you can do for The Charles Finney School is to refer new families.  If you need more brochures and/or profiles, just let us know
  3. If you participate in your employers United Way Campaign, designate next year's gift to The Charles Finney School. All you need is a donor designation form and designate Charles Finney Corporate High School #2564 to receive all or a portion of your donation.  You can also designate Finney on line at www.uwrochester.org and click on the Give Now button. Our 2015-2016 goal is 50 donor designated gift from United Way.
If you have any questions about any of the items listed above, please feel free to contact me at sroman@finneyschool.org

Serving in Christ,

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Squibbles From Student Services
lori slattery

Each year at this time, I am amazed at how quickly the school year has gone by!   I have known many of the senior class since they were in middle school.  It has been such a privilege to see them grow through the years.  Congratulations Seniors!

Final Report Cards will be emailed home.  If your student requires summer school, you will receive a letter in the mail with detailed registration instructions. Please review carefully as each district has its own registration procedure.

The Student Services Office will contact high school families by email in August when schedules are ready for viewing. RenWeb will be unavailable for viewing during the summer months.

If you do not have computer access, please contact Student Services.

Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill 100 Service Credit Hours before graduation.  Hours can be done anytime beginning the summer after eighth grade through the end of their senior year (hours are pro-rated for new students).  A form must be turned in to Student Services within one year from the time the service is complete.  Forms are available on line and in Student Services.   Juniors in order to be eligible for senior privileges in the fall you must have all but 25 hours of your community service hours completed and documented. Privileges may include late arrival, early dismissal, and lunch & study hall sign out.

IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION:

All families are encouraged to complete the online FAFSA application (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Deadline for filling the FAFSA is June 30th

The senior banquet will be held on Thursday, June 4th 6:30pm at Glendoveers Banquet Hall.  Tickets are $15 and are available now in the Main Office for families to purchase.  Seniors attend for free.

Graduation Rehearsal will be held Friday, June 5th 9:30 am at Bethel Christian Fellowship.  Caps and gowns will be given out at rehearsal. Gowns will need to be pressed, please use the LOWEST setting on the iron as the material is very delicate and will burn easily.  Attendance at rehearsal is mandatory and will last about 1 ½ hours.

Graduation will be held Saturday, June 6th 10:00 am at Bethel Christian Fellowship.  Graduates need to arrive by 9:00am.
**NOTE:  CHANGE - Graduation will be in the MAIN SANCTUARY of BETHEL CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP.  It was to be in the Historic Sanctuary this year, but; there is a funeral scheduled there at the same time.  We appreciate your flexibility to help accommodate the church and family.** This is a formal event and graduates are required to dress as such.  No jeans, t-shirts, flip flops, work boots, etc.

Day of Caring - Thank You:

  MANY THANKS!!!

The PTO would like to thank ALL of our parent volunteers, our
corporate volunteers from Xerox, and Mr. Charles Taylor for professionally buffing the floors in the main hallway. We GREATLY APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU who gave so generously of your time on April 30th for Prep Night and on May 1st for the Day of Caring. Together, we did something greater by taking time to care for the facilities that God has entrusted us with. It was a tremendous blessing to see everyone working together. Thank you ALL so much!!!

SCHOOLMALL.COM

The holidays are fast approaching. While you are shopping on-line, please remember Finney's fundraising program called "School Mall".  The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on-line store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores:Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help!

Mark Minnetta Scholarship

Congratulations to Nicolette Pecor on receiving the 2015 Mark Mannetta Scholarship Award.

The Mark Manetta Scholarship is awarded to an 11th grade student that has finished first in class for academic excellence and has involvement in music appreciation and study.  The scholarship is used towards tuition relief for the student's senior year at The Charles Finney School.

Mark Manetta is best known for his work as the guitarist on many of Chuch Mangione's recordings.  He also played with Ben Vereen, the Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestras, and many others.  Oasis Christian Fellowship maintain and fund the Mark Manetta Scholarship.
