Nurse's Update

sue wilson

I am hoping by the time you read this newsletter, we will have ALL snow behind us!  The nurses office has been a busy hub of activity this spring.  I am now into thinking about next year and what needs to be done.

Please remember if you have a child entering any of the following grades, NYS mandates that they have a physical:  K, 2, 4, 7, 10.  That means if your child is currently in preschool, 1st, 3rd, 6th , or 9th grade, you will need to make sure their physicals are done and turned into me by the end of October, 2015.  If you are having routine pediatrician visits for your children, then their immunizations should be caught up as well.

We have an exciting opportunity on Sunday, May 17.  The Charles Finney School is going to participate with a team of walkers for the CF Foundation in support of one of our own students, Bobby from Kindergarten.  We would love more walkers to come along side of us but we also need financial support for this great organization that partners with families to help ease the burden of this disease.  Please check out the Team's Website:  Bobby's Bunch at Finney.  Donations/team walkers, etc can all be done online.  If you have questions about this, see either myself or Kris Snyder here at school.

If your child has medication here at school, you will need to come and pick up those medications in the last few days of school.  You will be receiving a letter in regards to that shortly.  Any medicine that is left here, will need to be destroyed.  It will NOT be available after the last day of classes.

Have a great end of the school year.  Finish strong.  Please stay healthy and know that

Mrs. Sue Wilson, R.N.

Please join other Finney parents when we meet on Thursday mornings from 8:00 to 9:30am as we pray for our school, administration, faculty, staff and Finney families.  Come whenever you are able. You can also join our email group to receive prayer requests to pray at home.  Contact Kathy Smith at kathys0925@frontiernet.net  or

585-671-1644 for more information.

From the President

Dear Parents,

Here we are in the last full month of the school year.  May is full of concerts, class trips, special chapels, baseball and softball games and that most important day that no one should forget, Mother's Day.  Let me be the first one to wish all of our Finney moms a fantastic Mother's Day!

The last pus of the school year is most often the most challenging one for both school personnel and students.  With all of the various activities happening all around us and the bonus distractions that spring brings with it, everyone must dig deep to finish strong.  Our teachers need parent support.  The best way to do this is to stay in communication with one another.  Parents and students need to loo at RENWEB regularly to see exactly how your child is doing.  Older students need to go to their teachers and take advantage of the extra help they offer.  Parents and older students need to average the quarters together (RENWEB does not automatically do this each quarter) and see exactly where you stand for a yearly average.  In the middle and high school passing a course may come down to the final exam.

Summer break will soon be here but we still have about four weeks to leave a positive mark on another great year at Finney!  Thank you for supporting our teachers and school community.  The Day of Caring (on May 1st) will be a great testimony of how both our parents and students love and support this school. (All students are expected to be in attendance from the beginning of the day until the end - as a normal school day). I would like to offer a special thanks to Mrs. Valerie Zombek, our PTO President, for organizing this incredible day!

New Parent Survey

We will once again make available on-line a parent survey.  We need ONE member from each household to participate. This short survey will help us gain a better understanding of how we can improve the school moving forward.  We used the results of last year's survey to implement changes in the current school year and will do the same going into next year.  The results of this survey will be made public in the fall.  The survey can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CFS2014SurveyNPS

The survey will remain open until May 29.  Hard copies of the survey are available in the Main Office if you are unable to access the internet.

Enjoy those May flowers!!

Mr. Michael VanLeeuwen
President
From the High School Principal

It is hard to believe the 2014-2015 school year is coming to a close. Please continue to pray for peace and clarity as we wrap up the last few weeks of school. We have all been encouraging students to finish strong!

The face of student government at Finney is changing! We are in the process of creating a Student Council for the 2015-16 school year. High school staff came to the conclusion that this format would be a more effective way for students to participate in a unified government. Council members will: represent the student body to help influence school policy and decisions, promote school spirit, link communication between faculty, students, and families, and they will oversee and make recommendations for student clubs and committees. Student Council members will include: the council office (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) - CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING COUNCIL OFFICERS:  Simeon Heard - President, Jacob Dean - Vice President, Ashley Burch - Secretary and Molly Perrin - Treasurer, council members (2 representatives from each grade 9-12), and administration (School Counselor and HS Principal). Membership expectations will be published in the Finney Student Council Constitution. More to come...

The theme for this year's Prom is the 1920s, The Great Gatsby. It will be held on May 16th at the Burgundy Basin (1361 Marsh Rd, Pittsford, NY 14534) from 6:30-10:30 PM. Music will be provided by Fabio, our International student from Italy.

The Senior Trip is May 19th - 23rd in Orlando, Florida.

Senior Chapel is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th. Seniors are required to attend. We invite you to come enjoy this last all school chapel of the school year.

Senior Banquet will be held at Glendoveers (2328 Old Browncroft Rd., Rochester, NY 14625) on Thursday, June 4th at 6 PM. The cost of tickets for family members is $20, seniors eat free! Tickets can be purchased from Mrs. Curtis starting Monday, May 4th.  All parents and family members who are planning to attend must purchase a ticket.

Lastly, graduation rehearsal is also required. It will be held on Friday, June 5th at 10:00 AM at Bethel.

We are entering the last weeks of school and there are many wonderful events coming up. Please refer to the events below and mark your calendars.  We want to finish the year strong.

With the change in the weather and year end quickly approaching we are seeing some overall changes in the students. We are proud of them and their accomplishments and encourage them to finish doing their best.

Volunteers are needed for the MS/ES year end picnic. We look forward to having this event well attended to celebrate the end of a successful school year. More information will be going home soon.

Reminders for Next School

Year

  • Returning families should reenroll online as soon as possible for next school year through ParentsWeb. Enrolled students will hold their spot in the class and get preference when it comes course selection.  We did have some wait lists this year.  We would like to avoid this as much as possible but we will need to plan for staffing.
  • We are also encouraging prospective students to apply now for next year using our new online application.  Parents are welcome to schedule appointments to view classrooms and meet teachers.
  • Remember to request bus transportation for next school year.  Go to your district website for a nonpublic/private transportation form.
  • Schedule your yearly physical now!
Homeschool Families

Are you a current or former homeschool parent? Are you interested in connecting with other homeschool parents who are looking to transition their children to Finney?  We are looking for parents and students to share their experiences and connect with new families.  Contact the Admissions office to learn more about being a part of this social event.  Share your advice, funny stories, and more!

Upcoming Events:

Praise the Lord!  The Bless the Faculty Campaign reached 100% of its goal thanks to the wonderful generosity of the parents, community members, and an anonymous donor who offered a challenge during the last weekend of the Campaign. Faculty and students will be blessed next school year with new curriculum enhancements, classroom enhancements, and athletic equipment.

Another big thank you to the parents who came out last week for the final Parent Coffee with the Leadership Team.  It has been a pleasure to meet with parents on a quarterly basis.  These gatherings gave parents insight into all that is happening at Finney and the leadership team had the opportunity to learn about what is important to parents in regards to their children's education.

As June quickly approaches, please review the following items that parents should consider accomplishing before the end of the school year.

  1. Have you made your gift to the Annual Appeal this year?  The Annual Appeal is the school's number one fundraising priority.  It supports every aspect of a Finney education because it fills in the 'gap' between tuition and the cost of educating each student.  To date, we are $30,000 short of meeting this year's goal.  Your support is greatly needed!
  2. Have you marked your calendar for the Barnes & Noble Book Fair on Friday, May 8?  Come to the Pittsford Plaza Barnes & Noble and celebrate all things Finney from 3:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. There will be student artwork on display, musical entertainment by Finney students, and book readings by Finney teachers.  Finney will receive 10% of all the proceeds that evening but you must present your Book Fair voucher at the register. Come out and have dinner in the café and buy your Mother's Day gifts - it's a great way to support your school.
  3. Have you distributed Finney's marketing brochure and school profile to a prospective family? These two new publications were sent to Finney families in early April. One of the best things you can do for The Charles Finney School is to refer new families.  If you need more brochures and/or profiles, just let us know.
  4. Have you registered your child for Word of Life Summer Camp, June 28-July 4?  This is a wonderful summer camp opportunity for Finney students ages 11 to 18 and their siblings.  The cost is $199 and includes transportation.  Deadline to register has been extended to June 1. Registration forms are in Finney's Main Office.
  5. If you participate in your employers United Way Campaign, have you designated next year's gift to The Charles Finney School?  All you need is a donor designation form and designate Charles Finney Corporate High School #2564 to receive all or a portion of your donation.  You can also designate Finney on line at www.uwrochester.org and click on the Give Now button. Our 2015-2016 goal is 50 donor designated gift from United Way.

If you have any questions about any of the items listed above, please feel free to contact me at sroman@finneyschool.org.

Switching gears, you may have heard by now that I am leaving The Charles Finney School at the end of June.  I have served as a professional fundraiser for the last 17 years and the time has come for me to end this chapter of my life.  This is a bittersweet announcement. I am excited the Lord has called me into new territory but sad to leave the wonderful administration, faculty, staff, Board, parents and students.  My family has been immensely blessed by The Charles Finney School and for this reason there will always be a special place in my heart for this school.  Yet I put my faith in Him and His plans for my life.

Please join me in praying for the next fundraiser who comes to Finney.  May he or she be Godly, passionate, experienced, and wonderfully awesome. May Finney continue to grow and thrive long into the future.

It has been a wonderful school year - but it's not over yet!  Continue to check RenWeb regularly, and continue to encourage your student(s) to finish strong.  I have seen so much growth in our students from year to year, and this year was no exception.   We have terrific students!

Our Final Exams will be held June 1st - 3rd.  The first exam will be from 8:00-10:00, the second exam will be from 10:30-12:30.    Students who only have an exam at 8:00 MUST LEAVE SCHOOL GROUNDS WHEN THEY HAVE FINISHED THEIR EXAM.  Students who only have an afternoon exam CANNOT ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 10:15.   If a student has 2 exams on the same day, I recommend bringing a small snack and drink to have during their break.  There is NO half day busing during exam week.  Students must arrange their own transportation.

The practice test will be held at 9:00 am in Gavett Hall, room 310 on the U of R campus. Parking is recommended in the Inter-Campus Drive Parking Lot. Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill 100 Service Credit Hours before graduation.  Hours can be done anytime beginning the summer after eighth grade through the end of their senior year (hours are pro-rated for new students).  A form must be turned in to Student Services within one year from the time the service is complete.  Forms are available online and in Student Services. Some opportunities are periodically posted outside our office.    Juniors in order to be eligible for senior privileges in the fall you must have all but 25 hours of your community service hours completed and documented. Privileges may include late arrival, early dismissal, and lunch sign out.

IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION:

All Service hours forms are due by Monday, May 11th.

Senior Chapel is Wednesday, May 27th 9:45-10:30 attendance is mandatory.

Project Compassion Opportunities

Invite Teens to Finney's COMPASSION2015

On Friday night, May 15, 2015, 6:30-830, Finney is hosting COMPASSION2015, an inspirational event for middle and high school students in the Rochester area. Finney's motto is "Do Something Greater," and Project Compassion, a ministry outreach of Finney, has taken up the challenge and God has blessed mightily.

Since September of 2012, Finney students involved with Project Compassion have brought acts of compassion to people in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Malawi. COMPASSION2015, NO LIMITS, will present Project Compassion's story as a means of encouraging students to devote their lives to serving God with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength.  The evening will feature worship, testimonies, solo artists, a message by Dr. Peter Burch, and the premier of Project Compassion's new film called Mission Stories.  The gathering is FREE.  Adults are also welcome to stay and rejoice in the blessings and presence of God.  To learn more about Project Compassion's remarkable journey check out the various tabs at dosomethinggreater.com.

Finney Mission Trip to Orphanage in Mexico (November 2015)

This November, during Thanksgiving break (21st-28th), Finney is sending a Project Compassion mission team to Rancho De Sus Niños (RDSN) orphanage located on a picturesque, rural campus on the outskirts of Tecate, Mexico, about a 2-hour drive from the San Diego airport.  Our mission will be share our lives and faith with the over 80 orphans who live at RDSN.  The mission trip also includes opportunities to serve on a work project, teach the Bible, and share testimonies.  The cost of the 7-day trip is $1,430 (which includes airfare).  To ask questions or sign-up for the trip send an email to Dr. Peter Burch at pburch@finneyschool.org

MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILIES! SAVE THE DATE!

Your opportunity to bless our incredible teachers and staff is coming up with the End-of-Year Faculty/Staff Luncheon on Thursday, June 4th, the day after the last day of school.

Sponsoring this event is a middle school tradition so let's make it the best ever this year.  If you could help make this event happen, please email Jenn Latshaw. You could be our shopper, make centerpieces for the tables, coordinate set up and/or clean up, keep track of volunteers and food donations. We really need all the help we can get!

Please look for an email coming toward the middle of the month from your parent rep. And remember to check on our PTO website for more information, too. Thank you for all you do to bless our faculty and staff!

SCHOOLMALL.COM

The holidays are fast approaching. While you are shopping on-line, please remember Finney's fundraising program called "School Mall".  The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on-line store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores:Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help!
Finney Robotics
Robotics Team Logo The Finney Robotics team had another successful season in the FIRST Robotics competition at RIT. Even though we lost in the quarter final rounds of the playoffs we did very well as a team. We won the imagery award for our artwork and the design of our robot and our overall presentation of the team. We would like to thank our main sponsor The Hoselton Foundation for their support this year. We will continue to meet throughout the year to get ready for next season. If you are considering joining the team, we are in need of mentors and students who are interested in robotics, no prior experience is necessary. Please contact Mr. Latona for more information at llatona@finneyschool.org. The off season is a good time to sample some of what goes on during the regular season and see if robotics is a fit for you.
