Nurse's Update

sue wilson

April Showers bring May Flowers and excited kids to get outside and enjoy nicer weather days!   As we roll into the end of school, a few things going on in the nurses office:

  • Scoliosis screening on all children in grades 5-9 during gym classes after spring break.  Those kids that do not have a physical on file in the nurses in the past year or physicals without documentation of scoliosis screening by MD, will be screened.  If there is a problem, you will be notified by letter from the school nurse.
  • Make your appointments now for getting your child's physical done over the summer.  It is the busiest time in local pediatrician offices, and those slots fill up quickly.  As a reminder, NYS mandates that physicals be done in the following grades:  K, 2, 4, 7, 10.  These physicals must be on file in nurses office by the end of September 2015.
  • If you have a rising 6th grader (current 5th grader), they will need to have the TDAP vaccine for NYS compliance.  If your child has NOT had this vaccine, please make those arrangements too.
  • Please see our website regarding FREE sports physicals that are being done at Penfield High School on Weds, June 3rd from 4-6pm.  Please call my office if you have any questions:  387-3770, ext. 230.  This is the ONLY time that free sports physicals will be completed.  There will NOT be physicals done over the summer.
Happy Easter, hope everyone starts spring off on the right foot!  May God's resurrection power live daily in your life!

From the President

Dear Parents,

By the time you receive this you will be in the middle of enjoying spring break. Hoping the "spring" part will actually be true by then! As we anticipate the changes warmer weather brings to our activities, so it is with the changes we anticipate when ending a school year while preparing for a new one. We all know that one certainty in life is that things change.

Capital project committees have been busy meeting and discussing what changes you might see in the fall around our building. There are some exciting things that I look forward to sharing with the Finney community in the weeks ahead. Despite the challenges associated with change, Finney has a bright future.

One of those changes that our students have been experiencing this year is a more rigorous academic program. Our Academic Committee has been working diligently to line up our curriculum with the standards of ACSI and Middle States accrediting bodies. Some of these changes have not been easy, but we feel they will ultimately benefit the student and the school as a whole. We continue to ask for your prayers and patience as we work through some of these internal academic changes.

The one thing that never changes is God's love for us. His word remains true regardless of how we feel or what we perceive. Let us hold onto His promises that His word spoken into the lives of our children and in this place will not return void. In other words, your investment and sacrifice will have positive life-changing results if your child is open to change.

So hold onto your hats and get ready for a new season, a new quarter, and new and better Finney in the months ahead!

Happy Easter,

Mr. Michael VanLeeuwen
President
From the High School Principal

It seems we get to this point in the year and are amazed at how fast time flies! The high school staff continues to encourage our students to finish strong. There is not much time left and so much to do!

Please remind your child to continue to participate in community service and turn in forms to get credit for the hours. The suggestion is 25 hours per year in order to have 100 hours by graduation. If you have a senior, please remind him/her to also be mindful of internship hours and stay on top of that record keeping.

The time has come to re-enroll your high school student at Finney for the next school year. It is extremely important that we have accurate numbers of returning students so we can plan course offerings. We have many popular electives that fill up fast, and we are continuing to offer dual credit options. Course scheduling for the 2015-16 school will begin soon. Students who are re-enrolled get scheduling preference. A schedule will not be created if a student has not re-enrolled, so complete your enrollment today!

Now that we are in quarter 4, students are permitted to wear shorts (to the knee) and capris (standard colors still apply Mon.-Thurs.). Please check the Parent/Student Handbook for details regarding the dress code policy.

From The K-8 Principal

Spring is here and excitement is in the air as we continue to have a wonderful year of learning here at Charles Finney. As always, we greatly appreciate the combined efforts of all as we support our students in successfully meeting the highest of standards set before them.

As we enter the month of April, our teachers continue to introduce and review for the SATs. SATs will be administered the last week of April for students in grades 1-7. During this testing window, please be sure to support your child by having them at school on time each morning, having had a good, nutritious breakfast, and well-rested from the night before.

Mrs. Ake, our fourth grade teacher, has gone on maternity leave. Please welcome Mrs. LaKeysha Evans who will be the long term sub for that class. She is very excited about being part of the Finney Family!!!

It's hard to believe we are in the last quarter of the 2014-2015 school year. Report cards will be mailed home the week of April 6. Please continue to encourage your child to work to the BEST of their ability until June.

If you have a love for kids, please contact me if you would like to be on our K-5 sub list. Requirements are minimal. If there are only certain grades you would be comfortable with, we can make that happen.

Admissions Office Update

tara bator

Thank you!

Thank you to the Finney families who reenrolled for next year.  Families that still need to enroll should reenroll online through ParentsWeb.   We are also encouraging prospective students to apply now for next year using our new online application.  Parents are welcome to schedule appointments to view classrooms and meet teachers.  All current Finney families planning to apply for financial aid and/or scholarship renewal for next school year must submit an online financial aid application through FACTS by April 6th.  This will require your 2014 Federal Income Tax information and W2.  Feel free to stop by the admissions office to enroll at our computer station or to ask for assistance.  We are happy to help!

Bus Transportation

Remember to request bus transportation for next school year.  Most districts require this by April 1st.  If you haven't done so compete a nonpublic or private school transportation request form from you school district as soon as possible!  Forms are available from your school district and may be on their district website.  Our main office may have a copy for your convenience.

Development Office Update

Happy Spring!

It is hard to believe that there are only two months remaining in the 2014-2015 school year. Read below to determine if you still have some 'school work' that needs to be accomplished before the end of the year:

  • Have you made your Annual Fund gift yet?  We need to raise the remaining $70,000 to meet this year's goal.  This is not a development office goal but a school-wide goal! The Annual Fund success ensures the financial stability of Finney and impacts every aspect of the students' education.
  • Have you considered how you will support the Bless the Faculty Campaign?  There are 120 faculty/classroom that remain on the Blessing Board outside the Main Office.  These items, that will enhance curricula in all thirteen grades, range in price from $25 to $500.  Gifts to support the Bless the Faculty Campaign are tax deductible.  Stop by school during business hours, or go on line to: http://givingworks.ebay.com/charity-auctions/charity/the-charles-finney-school/65816/ . Don't wait to support this effort.  The Bless the Faculty Campaign ends April 26th.
  • Does your employer participate in the United Way Campaign? If so, please consider designating this year's gift to The Charles Finney School.  On the Donor Designation Form indicate Charles Finney Corporate High School, donor designation number 2564, as the recipient of your gift.  Our goal this year is to secure a total of 50 United Way gifts.  Invite your family, friends and co-workers to support Finney.
  • Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 21 from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. This will be the third and last Parent Meeting for 2014-2015 school year.  It is a great time to learn about the many different ways the Lord has blessed Finney this year.

Join me in prayer regarding the success of the items listed above.  We praise God for all He has accomplished at Finney thus far and give thanks for all He will accomplish during the remaining weeks.

Serving in Christ,

Mrs.  Sheila Roman

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Squibbles From Student Services
lori slattery

It's hard to believe that quarter 3 has ended and we are now in the home stretch! As always please encourage your student(s) to continue to work hard and check RenWeb regularly.  Quarter 3 report cards will be emailed home through RenWeb.  Please contact Student Services if you require a hard copy mailed home.

You will receive information soon regarding on-line course registration for next year.  Please fill you course selection out as soon as possible. We have popular electives that fill up quickly.

Our Freshman Information Night will be Thursday, April 23rd from 6:00-7:00 pm.  This is an opportunity to meet the 9th grade teachers, hear expectations, view textbooks, receive syllabi, and ask questions about coming to high school.

If your student is planning on bringing an outside guest to the prom, they must turn in a guest pass form for approval.  Forms are available in Student Services.

Paperwork will be given out soon to any junior or senior interested in attending Careers in Sports Day on April 30th at Frontier Field.  There is a charge for this event, as it includes seats to a Red Wings game.  Lunch is not included, but there will be many food vendors available.  Seating is limited to students with direct career interest in this area.  A student will be considered registered only after paperwork and money has been turned in to Student Services.

Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill Service Credit Hours.  Juniors must have 75 documented hours to be eligible for senior privileges in the fall.  Opportunities are periodically posted outside our office.   Forms are available on line and in Student Services.

Important Dates:

Freshman Night:  April 23, 6:00pm

Junior/Senior Prom:  May 16

Senior Trip Week:   May 18

Senior Chapel:  May 27

Senior Banquet:  June 4

Graduation Rehearsal:  June 5 10:00 AM

Graduation:  June 6 10:00 AM

Some special reminders for seniors:

All families are encouraged to complete the online FAFSA application (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Deadline for filling the FAFSA is June 30th.

As you receive acceptance letters and scholarship awards, please be sure to give that information to Student Services.

All Service Credit Hours for seniors must be complete by May 11.  If you are unsure of your total hours, check in with Student Services.

SCHOOLMALL.COM

The holidays are fast approaching. While you are shopping on-line, please remember Finney's fundraising program called "School Mall".  The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on-line store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores:Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help!
