Nurse's Update
Welcome back from Christmas Vacation. Hope everyone had a wonderful celebration with friends and family. Happy 2015! Lots to look forward to in the New Year. Hopefully I will begin my Health and Safety Committee. I am still searching for those of you that might be interested in meeting once per month to help make The Charles Finney School a safer, healthier place for your kids. Please contact me at swilson@finneyschool.org if you are interested.
Please remember to dress your children appropriately for the weather. We try to have them go outside for recess every chance we can. Consequently, snow pants, boots, hats, mittens and scarves are a great idea! Speaking of clothing, we are in need of some HS size polo shirts for the nurse's office. If you have any that your child has outgrown, or if your child has graduated, please consider donating them.
Also, please continue to encourage your children to wash their hands. Due to a more virulent form of the flu this year in kids, we need to be diligent in hand washing, healthy eating and plenty of sleep. If your child is sick, please keep them home. This will help to decrease the spread of a variety of colds/flu.
I will be re-testing children that had difficulty with the hearing screens back in Nov/December. If there continues to be a problem, you will hear from me. Thank you to those that followed up on letters that went out and if you have not had a chance to return those letters, please do so at your earliest convenience.
Have a great month! Do something fun as a family - outside!

A Very Special Christmas Concert
| |
Monday, December 15th was a special evening at The Charles Finney School. Members of our Finney family, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Leenhouts were given the gift of music, with a special song that was composed for them, by Mr. Herb Smith and sung by a combined MS and HS choir. The song title was: (Trust in the Lord Evermore - T.I.T.L.E). What a beautiful evening for the Finney community! The song was written referencing one of the Leenhouts' favorite Bible verses: Proverbs 3:5,6 -- Trust in the Lord with all your heart,And lean not on your own understanding;6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

From the President
Dear Finney Family,
As many of you know I was invited by an international student placement agency to be a part of a trip to Shanghai, China. It was a great experience for me as I am working to develop our international student program here at Finney. Traveling 16 hours by plane helps put into perspective just how vast this world is. A week in a city of approximately 20 million people also puts into perspective how many big buildings it takes to house all of those people! ( I think I will stick with Webster). If you are able to join us for the parent coffee meeting on January 14, I will be a sharing more about my trip and the program.
In the meantime I have something I want our families to consider. There are many students who want to study in the United States. We are receiving inquiries about Finney every week. These students need great host families and we have a wonderful source of great families right here at Finney. It takes a spare room, an open heart, and a desire to change a life forever. Families are stipend between $500 and $800 a month to offset expenses. The stipend varies depending on the agency you work with. It is a big commitment, but one that will provide you and your family with a great cultural learning experience.
If you think you might have any interest in becoming a host family, please contact my office. (387-3770, ext. 232) Contacting does not mean you are signing up. I will be scheduling a meeting sometime towards the end of January (date yet to be determined) At this meeting we will have current host families sharing their experiences along with other information to help families make an informed decision about hosting an international student during the 2015-2016 school year.
A new year is upon us already. My hope is that each of you will have wonderful and blessed one.
Mr. Michael VanLeeuwen
President

 | From the High School Principal |
Happy New Year! I trust you all had a relaxing break and enjoyed time with family and friends!
It is sometimes difficult after a nice break to get back into the school routine. Attendance and timeliness are important factors in school success. Please partner with us and remind your child to get to homeroom and class on time.
For your child's safety, please abide by the following:
*Students MUST leave the school building/campus at the end of the school day. If they have sports/extra-curricular activities or tutoring, they must leave immediately following those activities. Students are not allowed in hallways after school hours. No one is allowed to stay and wait for an evening activity. The student must go home and come back later. All students must wait on the front benches for their rides. Thank you for your support!
*MUSICAL PRACTICE BEGINS NEXT WEEK: A reminder for those participating in the musical to only stay if you have a scheduled rehearsal. Please see your director, Mr. Barberi, for a schedule. Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Moody have a copy as well.
Jostens will be visiting sophomore, junior, and senior homerooms on Wednesday, January 14th to explain the ordering process (class rings, caps, and gowns) and pass out ordering paperwork. It is IMPERATIVE that students are in homeroom 1/14/15 or they will run the risk of missing the ordering information. For more details, please read Mrs. Slattery's Squibbles!
Mrs. Lydon has gone over the PLAN tests with sophomores. A copy was sent home with each student. The PLAN test benchmark scores for each category are as follows: English 15, Mathematics 19, Reading 18, and Science 20. "So, what does this mean?" you may wonder. If your son or daughter scored a 15 or above in the English category, he/she is likely on track to develop the necessary skills to succeed in a college English composition course. If your son or daughter scored a 19 or higher in the Mathematics category, he/she is likely on track to develop the necessary skills to succeed in an entry-level college algebra course, and so on.
We have finally received the results of the PSAT and will be going over those results individually with the juniors beginning in January.
I would like to introduce to you, Mr. Stephen Merritt! He has been subbing during Mrs. Lioy's maternity leave and has been with Finney since the start of the year. Mr. Merritt helped coach girls' soccer this fall and is currently help to coach the JV girls' basketball. Starting Quarter 3, Mr. Merritt will be will be joining the HS team for the remainder of the year! He will be helping in the Social Studies department teaching Civics and a section of Global I. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Merritt!
Upcoming Dates: *1/16/15 Quarter 2 ends *1/19/15 NO SCHOOL - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day *1/26-1/30/15 Spiritual Emphasis Week Blessings for a great month!

 | From The K-8 Principal |

Welcome back!!! I hope everyone had the time to relax and rest up. Here at Finney we are ready to make 2015 a year filled with success through hard work and dedication by providing students with daily opportunities to grow.
A new year always gives us an opportunity to reflect upon what we have done well and what we can do better. Have you been trying to figure out a New Year's resolution? If the answer to that question is yes, I have a great suggestion for you. How about setting plans to help your children experience greater school success in 2015?
Here are some ideas to be sure your child is successful at Finney.
- Provide routines. Many families build a daily "quiet time" when the television is turned off. This quiet time provides students the opportunity for completing schoolwork or for recreational reading if there is no homework. During this quiet time a suitable, somewhat free of other distractions, should be available.
- Reward their efforts. Rewarding students for high grades is not as effective as rewarding them for their effort. Students are always trying and want to make you proud. Therefore, the best way to motivate further effort is to notice it, to praise it, and to reward it.
- Monitor your students' school work. One way to do this is to have them check in with you after school and share how their day went. Another important way to monitor their work is to have them share any papers that they brought home and discuss them together. While parents should never do homework for their children, it is sound practice to help them if they are struggling, check it over for them once they are finished. Inform the teacher with a brief note if they are still having a problem.
- Finally, be involved! How important is parent involvement in their children's education? Study after study shows that it may be the top factor leading to student success. At Finney, we offer many opportunities to be involved in your student's education. Please join us whenever you can.
School and home can work together to build skills and knowledge, reinforce values, and develop a strong sense of worth. We must invest our time and energies in our nation's most valuable resource-our children.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Monday 1/12 Freshman Entrance for all 8th Graders
Friday 1/16 Quarter 2 Ends
Monday 1/19 School Closed
Monday-Friday 1/26-30 Spiritual Emphasis Week
Thursday 1/29 Finney Night of Prayer and Worship
Next Coffee Get Together 2/4.

 | News from the Library & Media Center | "Lunch in the Library" Begins in January! Here Are the Books We Are Reading... The 4th and 5th grade Lunch in the Library book clubs met for their kick-off meetings December 8 & 9. Ten students from 4th grade and twelve students from 5th grade "talked books" over their hot cafeteria and brown bag meals. After lunch, they reviewed, and then voted on what book they would each like their club to read together and discuss.
After careful discussion and deliberation, the fourth grade decided to read The Indian and the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks. The Indian in the Cupboard, the first in a series of four books, is a fantastic fantasy featuring a boy named Omri, who puts one of his plastic toy Indians into an old cupboard he finds in the attic. When he opens the cupboard, he finds the Indian suddenly has come alive, transported from somewhere in the past. The new friend impacts every area of Omri's life, teaching him some valuable lessons along the way.
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr is the book chosen by the fifth graders. Pink Rabbit is a novel based on the life of the author, a young girl whose family is forced to flee Nazi Germany. During their journey from country to country, they lose everything they have, but learn that their most valuable possessions are each other. The fifth grade book club will meet every Wednesday, beginning January 14.
Each book club will run from 6-8 weeks, and will also include door prizes, crafts, and a special party at the end. The cost is $5 and includes each student's own copy of the book they are reading. Students may still sign up by bringing their permission slip in to their teacher! Mrs. Regina Thorpe |

SCHOOLMALL.COM
The holidays are fast approaching. While you are shopping on-line, please remember Finney's fundraising program called "School Mall". The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on-line store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores:Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help!
