Student Safety!
PARENTS:
PLEASE FOLLOW ALL PARKING AND SAFETY RULES SETUP BY THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION:

IF A CHILD DOES NOT HAVE A WRITTEN NOTE FROM HOME OR A PARENT DOES NOT CALL THE MAIN OFFICE CONFIRMING A STUDENT IS BEING PICKED UP - THEY WILL BE PLACED ON THEIR BUS TO GO HOME

DO NOT PARK IN THE NEIGHBORING BUSINESS PARKING LOTS - STUDENTS ARE NOT TO WALK ACROSS THE DRIVEWAY BETWEEN BUSES

STUDENTS RELEASED FOR EARLY DISMISSAL MUST BE PICKED UP AND SIGNED OUT AT THE MAIN OFFICE - THEY MUST BRING A NOTE IN TO THE MAIN OFFICE IN THE MORNING AND GIVE IT TO MRS. MOODY - SHE WILL THEN GIVE THEM A PASS TO BE RELEASED FROM CLASS AT THE TIME OF THEIR EARLY DEPARTURE

DRIVE TO THE BACK OF THE SCHOOL - WAIT FOR BUSES TO LEAVE FIRST THEN PROCEED - FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS OF THE TEACHERS

IF IT IS PAST 2:50PM AND YOU ARE PARKED IN THE FRONT LOT - YOU MUST WAIT FOR THE BUSES TO BE RELEASED FIRST

RESPECT ALL TEACHER'S DIRECTIONS AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE BE OBSERVANT OF THE MARKED ENTRANCE AND EXIT

DO NOT PARK ON THE SIDE LAWNS - BORDERING THE DRIVEWAY FRONT ENTRANCE

When dropping off your child in the morning - in the front entrance/parking circle - please move forward to the front of the circle - just pass the front of the school so that others can pull in behind you.  If one car at a time stops at the beginning of the circle or even right in front of the front door it congests and backs up buses and other parents.

Thank you for following these rules and keeping everyone safe. Thank you.

Prayers and Praises

To all the Finney Family: Let's join together in prayer for our school community. For the dedication and service of all our faculty and staff. For the many Finney family parents and grandparents who share their love and God's love by serving as volunteers. For the many ways that God has blessed our school and provided for each need. For the health and safety of all of our students.  That our students will continually seek the Lord and follow the path He has for each one of them.

Nurse's Update

sue wilson In case you missed the constant contact, the process for Sports Permission slips is changing.  Starting with Winter 2014 sports, student athletes will need to complete forms - available in main office or from Coach Marchand.  Once these are completed, watch for dates of requal times.  There will always be at least 3 times available for these to occur.  At the requal, the paperwork will be accepted by the nurse and in exchange the athlete will be given a "Requal card".  This card must be presented to coach in order to be eligible to even practice.  No card, no practice/play.  This is being implemented in order to be in line with other schools in Section 5 play.  This helps to be assured that everyone on the field has active physicals and is fully eligible to play.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call me.

It is that time of year to begin screening children for both vision and hearing.  These screenings are done in accordance to NYS law.  If there is an issue identified, a letter will be sent to the parents asking for follow-up by appropriate practitioners.

As well as changes in sports and screenings, the weather is also changing. Be aware of the change in dress code requirements (no shorts after 11-1-14 until Spring 2015).  Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather outside.  Coats, hats, mittens and boots will soon be the norm.  Please be aware of the upcoming need and send in as weather requires.

Thank you all for the attentiveness to handwashing and proper "cold hygiene".  Considering all that has been going on both in the State and Nationwide, we at Finney are blessed to have stayed fairly healthy.  Please continue to pray for the Lord's protection over physical health of our student body!  I pray that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving - enjoy your families.

Rochester Family Mission and Pearce Memorial Church combine efforts each Thanksgiving to reach out to approximately 800 needy families throughout the Rochester Community.  You can help,  now through Wed. Nov. 19th, bring in donations of boxed pasta or spaghetti and/or canned fruit. Place them in the collection boxes in the main office of Finney!

THANK YOU!

From the President

Dear Parents,

Is anyone else feeling that this was one of the busiest falls ever? It has been a "productive busy"  as far as Finney is concerned. As the student population continues to grow so does our desire to provide the best possible programs and opportunities for our students. The faculty continues to work hard on improving our academic program in preparation for a site visit by the accreditation committee next fall.  There are many other projects being worked on behind the scenes to help us serve our families.

November shows no sign of letting up. Thanks to the efforts of Wes Nance and Sheila Roman we  just received word that Finney has received a $25,000 grant from the Davenport-Hatch Foundation  for a total restoration of our music room. Our music program has seen wonderful growth with the efforts of Miss Christine Voldan. Now she will have the tools needed to make it one of the very best programs in Rochester. We need you to tell your friends and family that this is yet another reason why they should send their children to Finney!

We also welcomed three international students to Finney this fall. The board is committed to funding this effort to grow the program in the years to come. I will be involved in several international trips over the following months to partner with schools in places like Shanghai, China. Please pray that God's will be done in all aspects of this program. The school will be in need of host families for the fall of 2015. There will be a meeting after the first of the year to discuss  the details involved in hosting an international student.

As we head into the Thanksgiving season may our hearts always be thankful for the many blessings we share together at Finney. I know I speak for the entire faculty and staff when I say we are so thankful to each of you for giving us the opportunity to work with your children. I am confident our children and this school will Do Something Greater as we partner together.

May I be the first to wish you a Blessed Thanksgiving!

Blessings,

Mr. VanLeeuwen
President
From the High School Principal

Autumn has finally made its debut, and I trust you are taking in the smells and sights of the season! It is hard to believe the first quarter has ended. The high school students are settling into solid routines.

The first two weeks of October, I visited all of the 9th-11th grade English classes. We did a mini-workshop on learning styles, study habits, note taking skills, and test taking strategies. I received good feedback from students and staff alike. We plan on expanding this program for 9th graders next year.

Finney is teaming up with Pearce Memorial Church for a Thanksgiving food drive. Pearce partners with Rochester Family Mission to provide Thanksgiving meals to approximately 800 families in the Rochester area. Due to a drop in donations from places like FoodLink, Pearce is in need of help from the community. We are collecting pasta/spaghetti and/or canned fruit. If you would like to help out, just bring in your donation to the Finney main office. We will be collecting until Wed. 11/19.

The PLAN and PSAT tests are complete. (The PLAN is preparatory for the ACT, and the PSAT is preparatory for the SAT.) Results from the PLAN and PSAT will help us determine the many facets of college readiness as well as allow us to reflect on our own instructional practices. Results should be mailed to me after the first of the year. The PLAN test data will be reviewed with sophomores during English. I will meet with the juniors individually to discuss the PSAT data.

Mr. Palmer has begun meeting with the seniors. They will be given a folder containing Student Services paperwork and college planning information. Please review this information with your child. They will also discuss post-graduation goals and plans. Please ask your senior about this meeting and what his or her next steps should be in regards to the planning process. If your senior has not yet had his/her meeting, please be patient as we work through the scheduling.

November 24th and 25th have been set aside for Parent/teacher conferences. Students failing one or more core classes, or on academic probation, will require a conference. Parents of those students will be notified by Mrs. Slattery.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 reminds us to "Give thanks in all circumstances..." As we approach this season of thanksgiving, may God bless you richly. Happy Thanksgiving!

Development Office Update
sheila roman

I love the month of November! There is something very special about our nation setting aside the fourth Thursday of the month to give thanks. I also appreciate this time of year because it kicks off the Season of Giving, as you find amazing stories of love, hope and charity filling the media.

In the world of charitable giving, November and December are the two months that organizations receive the greatest percentage of charitable donations, and The Charles Finney School is no exception. On average, Finney receives almost 80 percent of its charitable donations during these two months.

There are many reasons why people choose to give during the holidays. Below are just a few reasons:

  1. People give because they receive an annual appeal letter asking for support
  2. Donating is a way of giving thanks for the many blessings they have received throughout the year.
  3. Families often use Thanksgiving as a time to come together and decide how much they would like to give to their favorite charities.

Regardless of why people give, charitable giving, like Thanksgiving, is an American tradition.

This year, as you celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, consider how you can also enjoy the other American tradition - giving. If your family has been blessed by being a member of The Charles Finney School community, please give to this year's Annual Campaign.

There are a few ways you can support The Charles Finney School this upcoming holiday season:

  • Take the $50 Challenge (See your annual appeal letter that will soon arrive in mailboxes)
  • If your family is able to make a gift greater than $50, consider a sacrificial level
  • Support Finney through United Way's ROC the Day on Tuesday, December 2. To participate go to www.roctheday.org.
  • Support Finney through United Way. Use the donor designation form to designate Charles Finney Corporate High School #2564 as the recipient of your gift

As we begin the month of November, let me take this moment to thank you for choosing The Charles Finney School for your child's education. It is a privilege to partner with you in raising up the next generation of Christian leaders.

Serving in Christ,

Mrs.  Sheila Roman

Squibbles From Student Services
lori slattery

Student Services is now settled into a nice rhythm. It is great to see this office so busy with activity!

So far we have had college visits from RIT and SUNY Brockport.  Also, this year we hosted the Christian College Fair, put on by Roberts Wesleyan College.  This was a great success with many of our juniors and seniors in attendance.    Our college visits have given our students much information to start considering about their college search.  Many campuses are offering open houses throughout the fall.   Please encourage your student to research colleges of interest and schedule a visit.

If you plan to take the SAT or ACT tests and have not yet registered, please come to Student Services for registration information or visit; www.sat.org/register for the SAT, or www.actstudent.org for the ACT.  Please note that test fee waivers are available to students who receive free/reduced lunch.

The end of quarter 1 is Friday, October 31st.   November 24th and 25th has been set aside for parent teacher conferences.  Parents of students requiring individual conferences will be notified by Student Services.  Any student failing one or more classes or who is on academic probation will require a conference.  If you are not called by Friday, November 14th, and you would like to schedule either a group or individual conference please call Student Services by Thursday, November 20th.

Here are some reminders specifically for seniors:

When requesting a transcript, please be sure you have already applied to the college.  Before your transcript is sent out, you must turn in a completed transcript request form to Student Services. Forms are available in Student Services.  Please note, school deadlines vary, please allow up to two weeks for your transcript to be sent.

Mr. Palmer has been meeting with seniors individually.  Seniors were given a folder with information pertaining to their college search. Please encourage them to read through the packet and take advantage of the resources.

If your senior meeting has not happened yet, be patient, he's getting there!

ALL community service hours are due on or before May 15th.   Forms are available in Student Services and on line.

Director of Student Services

Renweb
The school is completing a transition from PowerSchool to Renweb,  our new school management software. Renweb is used by over 3,000 schools nationwide and will prove to be a better program for the school as a whole. The Parent Web  is where all families will access their child's grades, behavior reports, announcements etc. In order to access the "Parent Web" you must first set up an account. Please follow the instructions below to do this. Because school is not in session there will be no details to see other than the basic information. Please make sure each of your children are listed on this site.

Below are instructions on how to set up your account.

**Before you even begin the process of setting up a log-in - It is suggested that use FIREFOX as your web browser, if possible.  We have found that both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer may have some difficulties when parents go to log in or set up an account on RENWEB.

1.)    Go to www.renweb.com

2.)    Click on the far right tab "Logins"

3.)    Scroll to the first choice "Parent Web" and click

4.)    Click on the "Create New ParentsWeb account" link

5.)    You will see a window to enter "District Code"

6.)    Enter TC-NY in the District code window (you must use capitals and the dash symbol just as you see it here)

7.)    Enter your email address: this address must be one that we have in our system. If you changed your email since school ended last year you must call or email the school your new email address.

8.)    Click Create Account. A password is emailed to the email address entered. You will then be able to log in to your account. Once you log in please make sure each of your children are listed on the page. Click over their name and you will have access to their schedule, grades, behavior reports etc.

I would encourage you to download the Renweb app available to all Android and iPhone users. Click on the "Learn More" tab to the right of the log in page. This app will give you immediate access to your child's information on Renweb no matter where you are. Your child may not like that, but you will love it!

We are in a transition period. All the faculty and staff are also learning the new system so we ask for your patience with us. Please contact the school if you are experiencing any difficulties with the Parent Web. Note: If you forget your password and   have five "invalid" attempts we can reset your system at school.

This software is easy to navigate once you log in a few time and became familiar with it. We eventually will add more portals to the site that will include instant access to accounts and payment options.

FALCON SPIRIT RUN

Thank you!

Thank you to all the parents who donated time and food to help make the day a great success for our students.  We also appreciate the family members and friends who came out to encourage and cheer for the students.

We especially offer many thanks to all the students and families who worked to raise support and donations for the Falcon Spirit Run fundraiser.  We raised over $10,000 which will go a long way to help support our Athletics, Art, & Music Depts. and the PTO.  Thank you again!

SCHOOLMALL.COM

The holidays are fast approaching. While you are shopping on-line, please remember Finney's fundraising program called "School Mall".  The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on-line store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores:Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help!
News from the Library & Media Center

The last few weeks have been busy in The Charles Finney Library & Media Center (LMC)!  I have been getting re-acquainted with returning students, meeting new faces, introducing students to the new technology we have here, checking out books, and starting computer technology lessons.

New technology in the LMC, courtesy of generous donors, include a 50" Smart TV (online capability), Apple TV, and a new mini-iPad tablet.  New library science and computer tech lessons are introduced to an entire class on the Smart TV, from the iPad, before the students jump on computers and complete lessons themselves.  We are also looking forward to "reading" virtual books together on the TV, another fun way to keep students interested in books.  Of course, we always make time to read "old fashioned" classics, and students have time during each class to select and check out new books to bring home.

Did you know that the Finney LMC has over 7000 books and DVDs?  All of our materials are cataloged on our online website, available in school and at home.  To access the website at home, simply go to the schoolwebsite (www.finneyschool.org), look under "Links," and click on the Library link.  From there, students, teachers, and

parents can look for a particular book by title, subject, author, or ISBN number.  Parents are welcome to stop in to our LMC and check out books, as well.

In addition to our print materials, the Finney LMC has 12 desktop computers, all with print capability.  Students in the middle and high schools may use their "flex" periods to research and type essays and projects online, save them on their flash drives to print at home, or print here in the LMC.  The computers are supervised and help is available whenever the LMC is open to students.

Please feel free to stop in the LMC any time during school hours.  It is a favorite place of the students to read and study!
