Leaf-Raking Fundraiser
| |
The students who have committed to go on the art trip to Italy are hosting a fundraiser! Throughout the month of October, we are asking you if you need your leaves raked (obviously you do). If you could help us lighten the burden of raking your entire lawn, and help fund a portion of the participants going on this trip, the students would greatly appreciate it. We are asking for a donation of $50 for a small lawn, and $100 for a large lawn. Please let anyone and everyone know about this opportunity! Every dollar helps! If you or anyone you know would like to have us rake your lawn, please contact Adam Gallagher to set up a day/time that would be best for you. Also, there is still time to sign up for this trip if this is something that interests you.

From the President
Dear Parents,
What a fantastic first month of school it has been. We have amazing families representing the community called The Charles Finney School.
Classes are in full swing and our teachers are working harder than ever to provide a strong academic program. The school administration remains committed to raising the bar of excellence on all fronts.
The middle and high school students recently completed a Spiritual Emphasis Week that we believe helped strengthen our children's spiritual foundation to meet the challenges they will face this year. You can be assured that each faculty and staff member is committed to helping your child mature spiritually as well as academically.
I want to thank all of the parents who were able to join us for the parent meeting last week. We had a chance to share some of the survey results from last year and address some of the challenges reflected in the survey. These results will be available on line for all to view. If you have any questions regarding the information presented please feel free to contact me.
The next several months will be a blur as we meet the demands of busy schedules heading towards the holiday season. Please take advantage of the REN WEB parent portal to keep track of your child's grades and other reports. A strong start to a school year always means a better finish in June. Communication with your child's teacher during these busy months is extremely important.
There are many things happening behind the scenes here at Finney that could use your prayers. A few of those items include our annual appeal that will be mailed out soon, grants that have been submitted to foundations for capital improvements, accreditation work, and strategic planning being developed for the long-term health of the school.
Our vision remains the same; to be the leader in independent Christian K-12 education, distinguished by excellence in program quality and student success. With everyone working together we will see this vison come to pass.
Thanks for reading and I hope to see you all at this year's homecoming games on October 11th.
Blessings,
Mr. VanLeeuwen

 | From the High School Principal |
What a wonderful (but chilly) start to the new school year! We are thrilled to welcome 18 new students to the High School! Students are settling into their new schedules. We are hoping everyone has received their school polos at this time and are in proper dress code each day.
~PLAN & PSAT Tests~ On Wednesday, October 15th, our Sophomores and Juniors will be testing! The tests begin promptly at 8 AM and will last approximately 3 hours. Students must go home after the test is over. Details are in the letter that was mailed home on Friday 9/19. If you have a Sophomore and/or a Junior, and you did not receive the letter, there are extra copies in Student Services! There is no school on 10/15, for grades 9 and 12 due to the PLAN and PSAT tests.
~Attendance~ We continue to seek your assistance in tracking absences from school. If your child is going to be absent from school, it is important that you call the Main Office by 8:00 AM. Please state the date and reason for the absence. If your child needs to be dismissed early, please send a note to the Main Office that morning. If a student does not have a note from home, s/he will not be released from school/class until a parent comes to sign him/her out in the Main Office. If a student becomes ill during the day, s/he must go through the nurse's office to be dismissed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this policy.
~Don't Forget!~ I am including this again! This is important information to remember! There are "No Gum" signs posted all over the building. Due to damage to the new gym floor, a decision was made to ban gum from the school campus. We want to be good stewards of this building God has blessed us with. So, please remember, no gum, at all, on school campus! Cell phones and iPods must remain off during the school day. Students are encouraged to turn them off and leave them in their book bag, or locked in their lockers so as to avoid the temptation of checking a message or sending a text. There may be a rare occasion that a teacher will allow use in class for educational purposes.
Knee length shorts and capris can be worn during quarters 1 & 4 only.
~Contact Information~ If you have not met me yet, feel free to call (387-3770 X236) or email me (alyon@finneyschool.org) to set up a time to talk! It is such a blessing getting to know the high school students and their families.
Praising the LORD for all that He is doing at Finney this year!

All participants will receive a race t-shirt and there will be prizes. If you are not a runner - no worries! You can walk the course. The Charles Finney School is creating an Alumni Hall of Fame to honor alumni athletes who made significant athletic accomplishments while attending Finney. The Athletic Wall of Fame will be located across the main doors to the gymnasium. In a few weeks you will see photos of our first three honorees hanging on the wall. The 2014 honorees are Michael Ross (Class of 1993), Daniel Berg (Class of 1996) and Shawna Verosky (Class of 1996). These three individuals will be recognized during the Boys Varsity Soccer Game. Please congratulate them when you see them at Homecoming!
Rachel Viencek, parent of Avery (7th grade), Brooke (3rd grade) and Bailey (K), is organizing a Beat the Winter Blahs Evening for students and parents in grades K-8 for early February. If you are interested in helping to plan this event, please contact Rachel at 944-7193 or at rachel4everhis@aol.com. It will be a great night of food, fellowship and fun!
To encourage great communication with parents, members of the leadership team will be available for coffee and pastries on Tuesday, October 28 from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the conference room. We will be available to share some new things about Finney and to answer questions you may have about the general direction of the school. More details about the event will be sent to parents in the next couple of weeks. (To avoid confusion - Coffee with Mrs. Paganelli, K-8 Principal, is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15 at 9:00 a.m. and is different from the event described above.)
We are seeking volunteers to help plan the Annual Spring Auction which will be held on Friday, April 17. The Annual Spring Auction is the school's largest special event fundraiser and it requires a lots of help. We are in need of a Chair of the event so if you are organized and like to plan events, please contact me.
Lastly, the Annual Appeal will be mailed in October. We strongly encourage every family who has never supported the Annual Appeal in the past to support the school's number one fundraising priority. Our goal is to receive gifts totaling $10,000 from parents.
We are asking families to take the $50 Challenge!
If every family saved $5 per week for 10 weeks, you could make a $50 gift the week prior to Christmas break.
How can your family save $5 per week?
1. Skip one viente drink at Starbucks each week for 10 weeks.
2. Skip one trip to McDonalds each week for 10 weeks.
3. For those with 5 people in a family - each person could save $1 per week for 10 weeks
4. Return 100 cans or bottles every week for 10 weeks (ask your friends and family members for their cans and bottles)
There are a variety of ways families can save $5 per week for 10 weeks. Post the way your family will save $50 in 10 weeks on facebook or twitter.
Lastly, thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Meeting last week. We were excited to see the great attendance, appreciate the questions and dialogue, and value your opinions about the direction of The Charles Finney School.
Thank you for choose The Charles Finney School for your children's education!
Serving in Christ,
Mrs. Sheila Roman

 | Squibbles From Student Services | Student Services has been buzzing with activity! By the time you read this we will have had our New Student Social and Spiritual Emphasis Week. We have had a great start to the year! Once again, October will be a time for college visits for our juniors and seniors. I am happy to announce that Finney will be hosting the NACCAP (North American Coalition for Christian Admissions Professionals) on Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 pm. This Christian College Fair, (previously hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College at Pearce Memorial Church) will boast dozens of Christian college's and is a great way for students to get a peek into many schools all in one night. I encourage you to save the date and attend with your student. On October 15th, we will be administering the PSAT (11th grade) and PLAN (10th grade) Tests. The tests begin promptly at 8:00 am and last approximately 3 hours. Students will need to arrange transportation home. There is no mid day busing available. Students are not allowed to stay in the building once the test is over. Students should get a good night sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast that morning; they should also bring sharpened #2 pencils and a calculator to the test *PLEASE NOTE: There is no school on October 15th for students in grades 9 & 12. Please call student services with any questions. The SAT and ACT registration information is available in Student Services and on-line at sat.org and actstudent.org IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGUARDING FREE/REDUCED LUNCH; any student who qualifies for free or reduced lunch is also eligible to receive waivers for SAT testing, AP Exams, and some college application fees. Free/Reduced lunch applications are available in the Main Office. We encourage families to apply. RenWeb is a great tool for our families to stay informed regarding grades and assignments. We encourage students and parents to check RenWeb at least weekly. Quarter 1 ends October 31st. If you need log in information, contact The Main Office. Lori Slattery |
 | Renweb |
The school is completing a transition from PowerSchool to Renweb, our new school management software. Renweb is used by over 3,000 schools nationwide and will prove to be a better program for the school as a whole. The Parent Web is where all families will access their child's grades, behavior reports, announcements etc. In order to access the "Parent Web" you must first set up an account. Please follow the instructions below to do this. Because school is not in session there will be no details to see other than the basic information. Please make sure each of your children are listed on this site.
Below are instructions on how to set up your account.
**Before you even begin the process of setting up a log-in - It is suggested that use FIREFOX as your web browser, if possible. We have found that both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer may have some difficulties when parents go to log in or set up an account on RENWEB.
1.) Go to www.renweb.com
2.) Click on the far right tab "Logins"
3.) Scroll to the first choice "Parent Web" and click
4.) Click on the "Create New ParentsWeb account" link
5.) You will see a window to enter "District Code"
6.) Enter TC-NY in the District code window (you must use capitals and the dash symbol just as you see it here)
7.) Enter your email address: this address must be one that we have in our system. If you changed your email since school ended last year you must call or email the school your new email address.
8.) Click Create Account. A password is emailed to the email address entered. You will then be able to log in to your account. Once you log in please make sure each of your children are listed on the page. Click over their name and you will have access to their schedule, grades, behavior reports etc.
I would encourage you to download the Renweb app available to all Android and iPhone users. Click on the "Learn More" tab to the right of the log in page. This app will give you immediate access to your child's information on Renweb no matter where you are. Your child may not like that, but you will love it!
We are in a transition period. All the faculty and staff are also learning the new system so we ask for your patience with us. Please contact the school if you are experiencing any difficulties with the Parent Web. Note: If you forget your password and have five "invalid" attempts we can reset your system at school.
This software is easy to navigate once you log in a few time and became familiar with it. We eventually will add more portals to the site that will include instant access to accounts and payment options.

Student sponsorship envelopes were passed out on Friday, Sept. 19th. For more information and to access run forms, please click HERE.

FACULTY AND STAFF CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST
Yes, it says Christmas!
High School families will host the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Christmas Breakfast on Friday, December 19th. We are looking for one volunteer to work from home soliciting food donations and volunteers by email. If you have a high school student and feel called to this role, please email Lori Kemp-Schneider at LKempSchneider@rochester.rr.com for more information. Thank you SO much.
CONSIDER THE PARENT PRAYER GROUP!
Enhance your prayer life by volunteering to pray for Finney this year. Consider joining our Parent Prayer Group and making this commitment. The group will meet one morning a week (day to be determined) at Finney from 8-10am. We are praying that God moves two individuals to lead this team, one of whom would be the point of contact for this group; this would entail soliciting prayer requests from the faculty and staff each week, compiling the requests for the team, and attending/running the prayer meetings. If you feel the call or have any questions, please email us at PTO@FinneySchool.org. We would love to talk with you!
SCHOOLMALL.COM
The Charles Finney School is part of an on-line fundraising program called "School Mall". The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on line store. We automatically earn a certain percentage of your order. The percentage depends on the particular store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially. Some of the vendors include familiar stores: Kohl's, WalMart, Target, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Netflix, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help!

 | Project Compassion Update | Project Compassion to Appear in National Magazine Project Compassion is set to appear in the November issue of Citizen Magazine, a national publication of Focus on the Family. I was first contacted by Focus on the Family writer Mrs. Paula Parker while driving from Arkansas to New Orleans on Project Compassion's 10-day summer mission trip in June. After three months of interviews, research, and writing, Mrs. Parker has the article ready for publication. A shout-out to Mrs. Rachel Perez, Finney's Visual Arts and Technology teacher, who prepared 18 of our best photos for consideration by the editor at Citizen Magazine. To date, Project Compassion has completed 356 acts of compassion; traveled over 7,000 miles; completed eleven disaster relief trips; and served the Lord in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Louisiana.
Finney Students Heading to New Jersey (for the 8th time!!) At 6:30 AM, Friday, October 3rd, a nineteen member Project Compassion mission team will depart for an eighth disaster relief mission trip to Highlands, New Jersey. When Hurricane Sandy invaded Highlands in October of 2012, the interior of the VFW was destroyed by 4-feet of uninvited ocean water. Our main service project is to paint the social hall and back deck at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building. The team will be completing other service projects and hosting a dinner to honor Highlands' families for their courage and endurance during the post-Sandy recovery. We are accepting donations of painting supplies (brushes, rollers, blue tape, etc.) and Home Depot or Lowe's gift cards. Please deliver donations to the Main Office or Dr. Burch's classroom. Donors will receive a formal letter acknowledging receipt before the end of the year.
Finney Students Make Big Impact at Northeastern Seminary Event Last May, Project Compassion launched Missing-the-Missing, a Gendercide Awareness Campaign. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing and global mass killing of females (born and unborn), and, on a likewise tragic and global scale, all forms of violence, abuse, and mistreatment of women and girls. On Wednesday, September 17th, six members of Missing-the-Missing attended a reading of The Cross and Gendercide by the author, Northeastern Seminary professor Dr. Elizabeth Gerhardt, at an event hosted by the Gerhardt Neighborhood Outreach Center (named for her grandfather). By the way, Dr. Gerhardt is the sister of Joy Moody, our main office receptionist, and Gina Thorpe, our school librarian. During the entire event, Missing-the-Missing's three gendercide awareness videos were playing on a television in the meeting room. Finney's student campaign against gendercide was officially recognized and applauded by Dr. Gerhardt and Dr. Doug Collum, Vice-President and Dean of Northeastern Seminary. Our videos can be viewed at dosomethinggreater.com, click "Missing the Missing."
Sixteen Members of the Finney Family Prepare for a Mission to Malawi The good Lord willing, on Saturday, November 22, Dr. Peter Burch, Ms. Pamela Kirby, Mrs. Nicole Tones and thirteen students will take to the air and when we touch down we will be in Malawi, Africa. The Project Compassion mission team will be serving at an orphanage in the city of Mzuzu. The orphanage was established by Hesed International Missions. Mr. Steve Butcher is the leader of Hesed and he will be escorting the team from Finney to Africa and back. Our six training sessions have just commencedHere are the students on the mission team: Julia Tones, Celeste Tones, Dylan Ocorr, Noah Kemp-Schneider, Nicky D'Angelo, Bethany Shearer, Ashley Burch, Devonte Burch, Ethan Frost Durkee-Pollock, Honus Wagner, Sarah Curtis, Molly Perrin, Erin Smith. Please pray for our team and I will have much more to share in next month's Finney Factor.
