International Student Program (ISP)

Please take a moment to visit our International Student Program webpages found under the admissions tab on the Finney website. Finney is seeking host families for the 2014-2015 school year. There is an application process. All approved families will be forwarded to an agency for possible consideration. Host families are paid a stipend each month to host a student.  These stipends range from $400-$800 month depending on the agency. Please refer to the website for more details on this exciting new program. Let's bring the world to Finney next year! Please join me in praying for at least five international students to cover the cost of hiring a much needed school counselor next year.

From the President

 Dear Parents,

It has been a very busy summer around the Charles Finney School. One of the most enjoyable things about serving at Finney are the opportunities I have to see and hear first-hand, the reactions of our school community to the changes that are made each summer.

This fall you will see several new faces as part of the Finney team and a familiar one in a different role. First, we welcome Mrs. Amber Ake and Mrs. Jenna Stehler to our elementary team. We also are blessed to have hired a school counselor, Mr. Andrew Palmer. Changing roles this year is Mrs. Paganelli who is moving into the role of the K-8 Principal. I am excited to see how the Lord is going to use their skills here at Finney.

There is a key volunteer role that is open.  We need a Chairperson for the PTO. If you feel called to consider fulfilling this position, please pray about it, talk about it and ask questions.  You can contact me at mvanleeuwen@finneyschool.org.  Check out the PTO website to see the ways our PTO supports life at Finney.  We would love to have your ideas, energy and involvement!

Other new faces will include approximately 50 new students throughout the school. We love new faces and still would love to see another 50! It's not too late to share with other parents who might be considering a change of school environment for their child. Federal statistics are still showing that bullying and other social pressures our children are facing continue to increase. Finney is not a perfect school, but it is one that provides a safe, secure and loving environment. New students each year have shared with me how thankful they are that their parents made the change.

We would ask that you would make it a matter of priority this month to lift up the new school year that is quickly approaching in prayer. The faculty and staff have designated Wednesdays throughout August to focus on praying and fasting for the school and the families of Finney. If you will set aside a small amount of your busy day to do this we will see big results. The biggest result I hope to see is that each child would grow in their relationship with Christ or start one if they haven't already.

Enjoy your August and we will see you soon!

 Blessings,

Mr. VanLeeuwen
President
From the High School Principal

I trust you are all enjoying your summer and staying cool! I can't believe it is half over! There are always things happening in the high school: cleaning, construction, and plans to paint!

~New This Year~
Faculty and staff are being trained on our new computer system, RenWeb! We are excited about its capabilities and all the potential for the future of Finney. Parents and students watch for future Constant Contact/Emails for information on how you will be able to access information similar to what was done with PowerSchool.

I am thrilled to partner with Mrs. Yvonne Paganelli this year. She is moving from being a 4th grade teacher into the role of K-8 Principal! Please join me in welcoming her!

I have been listening to the voice of students and concerns of parents for the last two years regarding study habits and test anxiety. I am in the process of creating a mini workshop for 9th through 11th grade called Study Skills and Test Taking Strategies. Mrs. Lydon has graciously agreed to let me push into her English classes mid to late September. It will take 1-2 class periods. My hope is to start the students off with some great tools to set good habits that will carry them through the year and their high school career. They will also come away with handouts and websites to access and share at home.

We got news that ACT is no longer offering the PLAN for 10th graders. We are looking into our options for a standardized assessment for that grade. The PSAT is still scheduled for 11th graders on October 15, 2014.

Finney has a blog! Be sure to check out the posts from faculty, friends of Finney, and students. You can get to it through the Finney home page.

Robotics/CAD has a new 3D printer! I was able to witness the first 3D print that Mr. Patrick pulled off the machine this summer, a green chain link! Be sure to check it out the next time you are in for a visit!

Upcoming Dates:
8/18/14 Fall Sports Begin

Blessings for a great month!

School Counselor Hired

Mr. Andrew Palmer was

Mr. Andrew Plamer.
recently hired as Finney's first full-time school counselor. Andrew's wife Lisa worked as an art teacher at the school for several years before they moved to China and taught at a school in Beijing. Andrew has volunteered at Finney before they moved giving him  good understanding of our school community. This is a huge answer prayer as we step out in faith to take on another much needed support staff member to meet the demands of our growing student body. Mr. Palmer is a degreed and experienced school counselor and will be working with students of all ages in a variety of ways. More information on Mr. Palmer will be posted soon on the website.

Development Office Update

When one works at a school, summer is a wonderful time for rest, relaxation and planning for the next school year.  It is a blessing to have time each year to think about ways to improve - from a professional, personal and spiritual standpoint.  Summer provides time to think about better ways to engage all members of the school community to advance the mission of The Charles Finney School.  In the coming weeks and months we will announce new events, new volunteer opportunities, and additional ways you will be able to support Finney.  The goal of all these things is to grow The Charles Finney School, spread the Light of Christ, and positively impact our community.

This summer The Charles Finney School launched its new Blog. You can go to www.finneyschool.org to view our summer posts.  New entries are posted each Thursday and a link is posted on the Finney facebook page.  We are very excited about this blog because it provides the opportunity to share some ways Finney's students, teachers, parents and alumni are changing our world.  You can help spread the good word about The Charles Finney School by re-posting the blog on your facebook page.  The number one reason families choose The Charles Finney School is through conversations and recommendations of our current families.  We are very grateful to our parents and students who serve as Finney's greatest ambassadors.

Earlier this year, parents completed a survey that asked questions about every aspect of The Charles Finney School education.  We promised the results would be shared with the community once tabulated. Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. The evening will be celebratory and informative in nature.  More details about the evening will follow in the September newsletter.

Last but not least, The Charles Finney School community will have a presence at Rochester's last LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Championship the week of August 11. Many of our faculty, staff, parents and students will be serving as volunteers during the seven-day golf championship.  There are a few volunteer opportunities available. Please contact Charity Curtis at ccurtis@finneyschool.org or Priscila DeBonis at prisciladebonis@icloud.com if you would like to volunteer. In return you will receive a food voucher and a pass to the tournament on the day you volunteer.

Thank you for choosing The Charles Finney School!  We recognize that making a commitment to Christian school education is a sacrifice.  Yet we have seen the Lord work great miracles in the lives of our students and extended His great hand of provision to Finney families.  Our prayers are with you during the remaining weeks of summer.

Serving in Christ,

New Language Lab Coming to Finney!

We have some very exciting news to share with you, the school has secured several donations through some very special people to fund a language learning lab. What this means is that Finney students will be able to choose from  a variety of different foreign languages. The choices will include such languages as German, Italian, French, Spanish, Mandarin etc.  These courses will be internet based and delivered through Rosetta Stone in our new language lab housed in the current high school Spanish room. There will be 24 new tables, chairs and computers for the students. This lab will also support our English Language Learners in our international program. More details on exactly how this program will work will be available soon. Miss Perez-Pherett will be proctoring this class and supplementing the internet based curriculum with projects and other exciting activities.
