Nurse's Note
| |
Hello Spring and "my how time flies when you are having fun"! As we roll down toward the end of the school year, there are a few things that you should be aware of from the nurse's office.
- We have been forewarned about the probability of a "bad" allergy year. Due to the moisture of the long, hard winter, there are a lot of molds around that are not usually an issue in the spring. Also due to the length/severity of the winter, once the temperatures change and it is consistently warm, things will bloom and it will be a very short, but intense time for allergies. Please be aware and if your child/children are allergy sufferers, please plan accordingly. I have already seen itchy, irritated eyes in my office....
- Please refer to the Finney website regarding changes in the NYS immunization requirements, effective July 1, 2014. If you have any questions regarding this, please don't hesitate to give me a call.
- Another reminder....if you do not have a doctor or you cannot get an appointment for the mandated physicals (K, 2, 4, 7 and 10 - these are NYS required years), Penfield Schools is providing FREE PHYSICALS on June 4th, 2014 at PHS. Details on the Finney Website/nurses tab.
- For those of you with medications in the nurses office, you will receive a letter regarding picking those medications up before leaving for the summer.
- Please have a conversation with your older teen children regarding safety during this time of proms and graduation parties. Every year there are tragedies during this time of year that are devastating and preventable.
- I have also posted information on the Finney website regarding Ticks and tick bites. This too is another "benefit" that this winter has bestowed upon us. The deer population is dense and they have foraged for food in wooded areas where there is ANY green available. Consequently if you or your family are hiking/biking/camping in the wilderness, please do a thorough check for ticks after returning. This pamphlet is very informative, how to remove ticks and what to do afterwards.
Enjoy this time of year - the Lord is faithful to have brought us through this hard winter and the joy of flowers in the spring are simple reminders. Take time and smell the lilacs!

From the President
Dear Parents,
Our last full month of the school year is upon us. It promises to be a busy one. I want to take this opportunity to catch you up on some exciting news.
IT Project
New computers and servers were installed over the spring break. Almost everyone in the building received a new computer and monitor thanks to a very generous donor. This updated technology will provide our teachers with more efficient tools to support their efforts in the classroom. The value of this upgrade cannot be underestimated.
International Student Program (ISP)
Please take a moment to visit our International Student Program webpages found under the admissions tab on the Finney website. Finney is seeking host families for the 2014-2015 school year. There is an application process. All approved families will be forwarded to an agency for possible consideration. Host families are paid a stipend each month to host a student. These stipends range from $400-$800 month depending on the agency. Please refer to the website for more details on this exciting new program. Let's bring the world to Finney next year! Please join me in praying for at least five international students to cover the cost of hiring a much needed school counselor next year.
New K-8 Principal Hired for 2014-2015 school year
Yvonne Paganelli has accepted the position offered to her as the principal of the kindergarten through eighth grades. Mrs. P. has served in the building for over 20 years as a teacher and is excited to begin a new chapter in her career as an educator. I am confident that she will do a fantastic job strengthening the K-8 program.
I will concentrate more of my efforts in the role as president of the school. I will still be involved in the academic and disciplinary aspects of the school. I will focus much of my energy in the accreditation process in the months ahead along with other projects that support the growth and welfare within the strategic plan as we strive for excellence in all we do.
I will also continue to interact with the students whenever I have the opportunity and work with and minister to them as the Lord leads. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your children over the past six school years.
Parent Survey
We need every family to participate in an upcoming on line survey. This short survey will help us gain a better understanding of how we can improve the school moving forward. The results of this survey will be made public in the fall. Finney Families be checking your email for a separate constant contact with a link to the survey.
The survey will remain open until May 23. Hard copies of the survey are available in the school office if you are unable to access the internet.
I know everyone is looking forward to a warmer May as we head toward summer break. It is our desire for everyone to finish the school year on a positive note. If you have any questions about the school, plans moving forward, personnel changes or whatever the topic, please feel free to contact me or just stop on by and see me.
Blessings,
Mr. VanLeeuwen

Squibbles from Student Services
| It has been a wonderful school year - but it's not over yet! Continue to check power school regularly, and continue to encourage your student(s) to finish strong. I have seen so much growth in our students from year to year, and this year was no exception. We have terrific students! Our Final Exams will be held June 2nd - 4th. The first exam will be from 8:00-10:00, the second exam will be from 10:30-12:30. Students who only have an exam at 8:00 MUST LEAVE SCHOOL GROUNDS WHEN THEY HAVE FINISHED THEIR EXAM. Students who only have an afternoon exam CANNOT ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 10:15. If a student has 2 exams on the same day, I recommend bringing a small snack and drink to have during their break. There is NO half day busing during exam week. Students must arrange their own transportation.

Graduation Rehearsal will be held Friday, June 6th 10:00 am at Bethel Christian Fellowship. Caps and gowns will be given out at rehearsal. Gowns will need to be pressed, please use the LOWEST setting on the iron as the material is very delicate and will burn easily. Attendance at rehearsal is mandatory and will last about 1 ½ hours. Graduation will be held Saturday, June 7th 10:00 am at Bethel Christian Fellowship. Graduates need to arrive by 9:00am. This is a formal event and graduates are required to dress as such. No jeans, t-shirts, flip flops, work boots, etc. Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill 100 Service Credit Hours before graduation. Hours can be done anytime beginning the summer after eighth grade through the end of their senior year (hours are pro-rated for new students). A form must be turned in to Student Services within one year from the time the service is complete. Forms are available online and in Student Services. Some opportunities are periodically posted outside our office. | Annual Appeal: Top Fundraising Priority |
Dear Families and Friends:
The Annual Appeal is the Charles Finney School's top fundraising priority. Your support last year enabled us to begin this school year with the highest enrollment in six years. Your continued support will help Finney to continue to increase enrollment, prepare students for academic achievement and community service, and transform young lives!
With the increase in enrollment this year, we believe that the Lord's divine plan for every student enrolled at Finney has brought them into our community of students and teachers. Personally speaking, I have seen students' lives transformed within days of arriving at The Charles Finney School. Our smaller classes, classroom structure, and caring community provide students with the appropriate environment for spiritual and personal growth as well as academic success.
Your donation to the Annual Appeal will support the transformation of students, enabling them to fulfill the Lord's plan for their lives. Sixty-five percent of Finney's student body requires some form of need-based financial aid. Half of these students are from the Rochester City School District, the worst performing school district in all of New York State. These are families who want a better academic alternative for their children. Finney's mission is to enroll any academically-qualified student who seeks a Christian education regardless of their family's financial circumstances. We believe that to do otherwise will have long-term negative consequences on the students, their families, our community and ultimately the world.
All donations to the Annual Appeal give us the ability to continue to improve the campus and academics. Finney has added a new state-of-the-art science laboratory for middle and high school student and now offers a greater number of college-credit electives. The K-8 science curriculum has additional labs and more hands-on learning opportunities. Recent upgrades to our facilities include a renovated cafeteria, which enables students and faculty to gather as a school community. Our students continue to participate in mission outreach opportunities within the United States and around the globe.
Your donation at this time is critical to the overall success of The Charles Finney School and each of its 275 students. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (NIV Hebrews 13:16)
Let us thank you in advance for your support of the Annual Appeal. You can make your gift on line at www.finneyschool.org/support. Our thanks to those who have already made their donation to the Annual Appeal.
Serving in Christ,
Michael VanLeeuwen

 | Spotlight on Joan Weisenreder |
After many years as an educator, I will be retiring from teaching this June. My teaching career began in 1966 in Ohio in the Lakewood Central Schools. I also taught as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines and in the Rush-Henrietta Central Schools. But my most meaningful years have been at New Covenant Christian School and The Charles Finney School where I've held positions as a fourth and second grade teacher. I've also been blessed by both schools as a parent. All three of our children are graduates.
So many people have touched my life during the 28 years I've been in Christian education. I wish I could thank each one personally. I am going to miss being a part of Finney, but I'm certain the Lord who lead me here is leading me forward to the next phase of my life. It's exciting to know that there will be more time for my many hobbies and interests. I really can't wait to see what's next for me.
I wish to thank everyone I've worked with and for at Finney and New Covenant Christian School. May God bless you all! - Mrs. W
