Nurse's Note
sue wilson

In case you have not seen it yet, New York State has determined that there needs to be a change to the immunization requirements.  This new law goes into effect on 7-1-14.  Thus causing all students in the fall of 2014 to be compliant with the law.  These changes affect incoming Kindergarten students as well as rising 6th graders (current 5th graders).  There is a chart on our website that advises of changes.  If after reading this chart, you still have questions, please don't hesitate to give my office a call.

Springtime also means completing any screenings that have not been done.  Scoliosis screening will be taking place after spring break.  Boys will be screened in their respective gym classes and the girls will come to the nurse's office during that same time.  If there are issues or concerns, I will contact parents.

Enjoy your Spring break and Happy Resurrection Sunday!  Christ the Lord HAS risen!

COMPASSION2014 is a Rochester area youth gathering at Finney on Friday, April 25, 6:00-8:30pm.  The evening begins at 6:00pm with a meal (hot dogs and chips) in the cafeteria. Worship and teaching follows in the chapel. The songs and message are all tied to theme: Expressin God's love for the world through acts of compassion. The theme will be echoed in the selection of music led by the high school worship team, led by Sarah Nielsen, and the high school choir, led by Carl Wager. The attendees will also hear original music performed by Sara Coutant, Nicolette Pecor, Ethan Frost, Bethany Shearer, and Matthew Parris (all current or former Finney students). The message will be brought by Peter Burch, history teacher and director of Project Compassion.  After the message, attendees will watch the premier of a short documentary film called, "Doing Something is Greater Than Doing Nothing, The Story of Project Compassion.

Robotics
Robotics Team Logo
The robotics team did very well this past weekend at RIT. Finney made it to the elimination rounds where we were paired up with the team from HFL. Finney beat Webster in the quarter finals ( Troy NY regional winners). Then we lost in the semi finals. Overall, it was a very good season and competition. Glory to God!

From the President

Dear Parents,

The calendar says it is spring. However, it looks and feels like January! I know that this long cold winter will soon become a distant memory when we see the daffodils and crocuses peeking through the snow and the grass growing.

Speaking of growing; did you know that Finney had its highest retention rate last year at 87%? We are shooting for 90% this year so please get your re-enrollment paperwork in if you have not done so already. The word continues to reach the community that Finney is a great a school to be a part of.  Part of what makes it great are the fantastic families who make up the school community.  We need your help in spreading the word. Expensive television commercials will not convince families to enroll their children, but your testimony will.  We still have room to grow. Growth will strengthen our school by allowing us to fund programs that directly benefit your child.

Speaking of programs: in case you have not heard the news, Finney will now be offering an extended International Student Program in the fall. Take a look at our new "International Student" tab under "Admissions" to find out more about the program. If you are interested in hosting an international student please contact the school. Under this program approved host families can receive a monthly stipend for qualified international students.  This program will provide yet another opportunity for Finney to reach the world for Christ.

Speaking of reaching the world for Christ; Project Compassion, led by Dr. Burch, has a wonderful community wide event that will be hosted here at Finney on April 25 at 6:00 p.m. for the youth of our area. Please encourage your child to be a part of this night.

There are so many great things happening over the next several months. Finney is committed to improving all aspects of what we offer your child. Keep your ear to the ground for several more exciting announcements in the weeks ahead!

Serving Him Together,

Mr. VanLeeuwen
President
From the High School Principal

It seems we get to this point in the year and are amazed at how fast time flies! The high school staff continues to encourage our students to finish strong. There is not much time left and so much to do! Spring sports have started, the annual auction is just a few days away, Joy Night has been rescheduled to April 11th, and before you know it, Easter Break is upon us!

Please remind your child to continue to participate in community service and turn in forms to get credit for the hours. The suggestion is 25 hours per year in order to have 100 hours by graduation. If you have a senior, please remind him/her to be mindful of internship hours and stay on top of that record keeping.

The time has come to re-enroll your high school student at Finney for the next school year. It is extremely important that we have accurate numbers of returning students so we can plan course offerings. We have many popular electives that fill up fast, and we are continuing to add dual credit options. Course scheduling for the 2014-15 school will begin soon. Students who are re-enrolled get scheduling preference. A schedule will not be created if a student has not re-enrolled, so complete your enrollment today!

Now that we are in quarter 4, students are permitted to wear shorts and capris (standard colors still apply Mon.-Thurs.). Please check the Parent/Student Handbook for details regarding the dress code policy.

Upcoming Dates:

4/4 Spring Auction
4/11 Joy Night
4/14-18 Spring/Easter Break
4/24 Freshman Night
4/30 Mid-quarter 4

Annual Appeal: Top Fundraising Priority

Dear Families and Friends:

The Annual Appeal is the Charles Finney School's top fundraising priority.  Your support last year enabled us to begin this school year with the highest enrollment in six years. Your continued support will help Finney to continue to increase enrollment, prepare students for academic achievement and community service, and transform young lives!

With the increase in enrollment this year, we believe that the Lord's divine plan for every student enrolled at Finney has brought them into our community of students and teachers. Personally speaking, I have seen students' lives transformed within days of arriving at The Charles Finney School. Our smaller classes, classroom structure, and caring community provide students with the appropriate environment for spiritual and personal growth as well as academic success.

Your donation to the Annual Appeal will support the transformation of students, enabling them to fulfill the Lord's plan for their lives. Sixty-five percent of Finney's student body requires some form of need-based financial aid.  Half of these students are from the Rochester City School District, the worst performing school district in all of New York State. These are families who want a better academic alternative for their children.  Finney's mission is to enroll any academically-qualified student who seeks a Christian education regardless of their family's financial circumstances. We believe that to do otherwise will have long-term negative consequences on the students, their families, our community and ultimately the world.

All donations to the Annual Appeal give us the ability to continue to improve the campus and academics.  Finney has added a new state-of-the-art science laboratory for middle and high school student and now offers a greater number of college-credit electives. The K-8 science curriculum has additional labs and more hands-on learning opportunities. Recent upgrades to our facilities include a renovated cafeteria, which enables students and faculty to gather as a school community. Our students continue to participate in mission outreach opportunities within the United States and around the globe.

Your donation at this time is critical to the overall success of The Charles Finney School and each of its 275 students.  And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (NIV Hebrews 13:16)

Let us thank you in advance for your support of the Annual Appeal. You can make your gift on line at www.finneyschool.org/support. Our thanks to those who have already made their donation to the Annual Appeal.

Prom - Starry, Starry Night

Squibbles from Student Services

lori slattery

It's hard to believe that quarter 3 has ended and we are now in the home stretch! As always please encourage your student(s) to continue to work hard and check power school regularly.

Paperwork will be given out soon to any junior or senior interested in attending Careers in Sports Day on April 29th at Frontier Field.  There is a charge for this event, as it includes seats to a Red Wings game.  Lunch is not included, but there will be many food vendors available.  Seating is limited to students with direct career interest in this area.  A student will be considered registered only after paperwork and money has been turned in to Student Services.

Jostens will be here April 7th during high school lunch to hand out orders and collect any money owed.   You will be notified by Jostens if you have an outstanding balance.

If your student is planning on bringing an outside guest to the prom, they must turn in a guest pass form for approval.  Forms are available in Student Services.

You will receive information soon regarding on-line course registration.  If a student is not re-enrolled, a schedule will not be created.  We have popular electives that fill up quickly, and while seniors usually get preference for these classes, re-enrolled students have preference over those who are not yet re-enrolled.

Our Freshman Information Night will be, Thursday, April 24th from 6:00-7:00 pm.  This is an opportunity to meet the 9th grade teachers, hear expectations, view textbooks, receive syllabi, receive course selection information, and ask questions about coming to high school.

Important Dates:

Freshman Night -  April 24, 6:00pm

Junior/Senior Prom -  May 3

Senior Trip Week  -  May 5

Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill Service Credit Hours.  Juniors must have 75 documented hours to be eligible for senior privileges in the fall.  Opportunities are periodically posted outside our office.   Forms are available on line and in Student Services.

Some special reminders for seniors:

As you receive acceptance letters and scholarship awards, please be sure to give that information to Student Services.

All Service Credit Hours for seniors must be complete by May 16.  If you are unsure of your total hours, check in with Student Services.

All families are encouraged to complete the online FAFSA application (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Deadline for filling the FAFSA is June 30th.

Be Blessed,

Forever Falcon

Christine Roman

I think back a year ago and am amazed at how much of a different person I am and how The Lord has used me. I graduated The Charles Finney School in 2013. I only attended the school for one year but that short amount of time has impacted my life dramatically. I was able to make amazing friends, and have teachers that devoted their time and energy to see students grow and succeed. Graduation day came and went, and as I walked across the stage I was so happy to have spent my year at Finney. But I also remember thinking, "Where will I be a year from now?"

I chose to go to YWAM (Youth With A Mission) a sixth month discipleship- training program that consists of 3 months in Hawaii, and 3 months in another nation. In Hawaii, I was able to listen to lectures and learn from speakers all around the world! I learned so much about what it means to choose to pursue God in every aspect of my life. It was AMAZING! After this, I had the privilege to go to the Philippines for 3 months. My team and I participated in many ministries including- prison ministry, prostitution ministry, bible studies, homeless and feeding ministry, prayer walks, high school ministry, typhoon relief and many more! God really broke my heart for what breaks His. I will never forget the sights of the red light district, or the devastating tracks the typhoon left. I know God is faithful to His promises, and He promises to make everything beautiful in its time. I was able to witness girls come out of prostitution, teenage boys give their life to Christ, typhoon victims choosing to still believe in God even after losing everything.  So why is it so hard for us to choose to pursue the Lord when things may not go as we planned?

These 6 months have been the best months of my life. I refuse to let this just be an experience, because I know it was only a chapter in my walk with The Lord! God does not call the qualified, but He qualifies the called. I thank The Charles Finney School for being my rocket launcher! This school helped me grow so much, and step out of my comfort zone. I am thankful to my teachers, and parents who never gave up on me. I am thankful for a school that believes its students can change the world!

I pray that graduating students to come choose to intentionally seek The Lord. I pray that they shine the light of The Lord and realize that His plans are SO much greater than their own.

"I cannot change people, only He can. But if my heart is right, He may be willing to use me in the process." - Matthew Barnett
