Nurse's Note
| |
You have heard it before, however, NOTHING is constant but change! On return from February break, I received notification from the NYS department of Health that they are most likely going to be making changes to the current immunization requirements. This will influence both incoming Kindergarteners and also rising 6th graders and take effect in September 2014 (this fall). If your children fall into this category, please keep posted both here, in the Finney Newsletter and on the Website as to noted changes. I wish I could tell you exactly what this will mean, however at this point, we just know that it will be changing. Thank you for working together to keep our school up to date on NYS requirements and most importantly, keeping our children healthy!
Happy "almost" spring!

The 2014 Finney Annual Raffle Ticket Sale
Saturday - March 1st
Grand prize - $1,000 worth of Wegmans Gift Cards!
Last year Finney Parents helped raise over $5,000 in raffle ticket sales and we hope to have your support again this year!
Our goal is to triple the amount we raised last year! There are 190 families represented in the Finney community and if each family could purchase or sell $100 worth of raffle tickets, we can easily achieve this goal!
For incentive, Finney will provide a $500 Wegmans Gift Card to the family/person who sells the most raffle tickets! If there is tie, the prize will be split. (Must be at least 18 years old to participate.)
Sale begins March 1st and ends April 4th at 7 p.m.
The winning ticket will be drawn at the Annual Spring Auction. At that time, we will also award the top seller with a $500 Wegmans gift card.
Any questions please email Dana at dharissis@gmail.com

The Charles Finney School is part of an on-line fundraising program called "School Mall". The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on line store. We automatically earn a certain percentage of your order. The percentage depends on the particular store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially.
Some of the over 400 merchants include
WalMart
Target
Best Buy
Kohl's
Disney Store
iTunes
Sears
Netflix
Barnes & Noble
Footlocker
Old Navy
Office Depot
AND 100's MORE!
Pass this along to everyone you know and help support the school. The hardest part is remembering to go through the web site www.schoolmall.com. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help.

From the President
Panama Mission's Trip a Huge Success!
It was my privilege to escort 13 Finney students on a mission's trip to Santiago, Panama. These students represented Finney and Christ in a way we can all be very proud of. They spent the first half of each day running a soccer camp. Each day our students would share devotionals and personal testimonies in- between running drills and scrimmages. After a short break the team would then head over to a local elementary school building and run a Vacation Bible School. They simply loved and served the local children and they responded in a way that only the Holy Spirit could have directed. Trusting relationships were formed allowing the gospel to be heard loud and clear.
A special thanks to Miss Jessamine Perez-Pherett who gave up her week off to help chaperone the students. She set such a great example to the team. A special thanks also to Living Word Assembly of God Church in Ontario, NY for coordinating the many details and allowing the school to be a part of their team. The students will be sharing some personal testimonies of their trip in chapel on Wednesday, March 5th at 9:45am. Everyone is welcome to attend this chapel.
International Host Families Needed
In case you did not hear the news, Finney was certified through Homeland Securities to host F-1 visa students. This Student Exchange & Visitors Program (SEVP) certification allows the school to issue I-20's to international students for long term academic studies. International students would be able to start as early as ninth grade and spend the next four years at Finney.
The school will be using several agencies to help secure these students. These agencies do pay a monthly stipend to families who host these students. The amount varies from agency to agency. It is our desire that these students end up with Finney families, but we also realize that they will also be with host families not associated previously with Finney.
This is a great opportunity for Finney for many reasons. The income from these students will enable us to hire personnel that will also support our domestic student base. The first priority will be a school counselor. Bringing the world to Finney will provide a cultural exchange and diversity that will allow our students to experience relationships they otherwise would not have been exposed to. Most importantly these international students will be exposed to the gospel of Christ. We believe lives will be changed and the word of God will be delivered through them to their home nations.
If you are interested in hosting a student please contact me. I will pass your name along to the agencies as needed on a first-come, first-served basis. The school may also act as an agency as we progress through the development of this program. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. (mvanleeuwen@finneyschool.org or 387-3770, ext. 232)
Enrollment Season
Please continue to share with your friends and neighbors your positive experiences with Finney. Our current families are our best advertisers when it comes to growing our school. We need to see our enrollment numbers continue to climb as we plan for the 2014-2015 school year. Thank you for being a part of this great school!
Serving Him Together,
Mr. VanLeeuwen President |
 | From the High School Principal |
March is here and certainly seems to be coming in like a lion! The time has come to re-enroll your high school student at Finney for the next school year. It is extremely important that we have accurate numbers of returning students so we can plan course offerings. We have many popular electives that fill up fast, and we are continuing to add dual credit options. Course scheduling for the 2014-15 school year will begin end of March, early April. Students who are re-enrolled get scheduling preference. A schedule will not be created if a student has not re-enrolled, so complete your enrollment today!
The SAT Prep Class is underway and being taught during the school day. Two of our teachers are sharing that responsibility, Mrs. Perez and Ms. Rogers. If you haven't gone online to sign up for the SAT test (www.collegeboard.com), I encourage you to do so. Test locations fill up fast!
Families of seniors, please remember to let Student Services know when your child receives college acceptance and scholarship information. We try hard to track this information in order to update our school profile. Thank you for your continued prayers and support of our students and staff here at Finney! Galations 6:9 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Upcoming Dates:
- 3/6 Open House! (K-12)
- 3/13 Joy Night/Art Show
- 3/14 School Closed - Professional Development Day
- 3/21 Quarter 3 ends
- 3/28 & 3/29 Musical Production: Annie
Blessings for a great month!

 | Annual Appeal: Top Fundraising Priority |
Dear Families and Friends:
The Annual Appeal is the Charles Finney School's top fundraising priority. Your support last year enabled us to begin this school year with the highest enrollment in six years. Your continued support will help Finney to continue to increase enrollment, prepare students for academic achievement and community service, and transform young lives!
With the increase in enrollment this year, we believe that the Lord's divine plan for every student enrolled at Finney has brought them into our community of students and teachers. Personally speaking, I have seen students' lives transformed within days of arriving at The Charles Finney School. Our smaller classes, classroom structure, and caring community provide students with the appropriate environment for spiritual and personal growth as well as academic success.
Your donation to the Annual Appeal will support the transformation of students, enabling them to fulfill the Lord's plan for their lives. Sixty-five percent of Finney's student body requires some form of need-based financial aid. Half of these students are from the Rochester City School District, the worst performing school district in all of New York State. These are families who want a better academic alternative for their children. Finney's mission is to enroll any academically-qualified student who seeks a Christian education regardless of their family's financial circumstances. We believe that to do otherwise will have long-term negative consequences on the students, their families, our community and ultimately the world.
All donations to the Annual Appeal give us the ability to continue to improve the campus and academics. Finney has added a new state-of-the-art science laboratory for middle and high school student and now offers a greater number of college-credit electives. The K-8 science curriculum has additional labs and more hands-on learning opportunities. Recent upgrades to our facilities include a renovated cafeteria, which enables students and faculty to gather as a school community. Our students continue to participate in mission outreach opportunities within the United States and around the globe.
Your donation at this time is critical to the overall success of The Charles Finney School and each of its 275 students. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (NIV Hebrews 13:16)
Let us thank you in advance for your support of the Annual Appeal. You can make your gift on line at www.finneyschool.org/support. Our thanks to those who have already made their donation to the Annual Appeal.
Serving in Christ,
Michael VanLeeuwen

 | Development Office Update |
The Annual Spring Auction is Friday, April 4 from 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. just about one month away. The goal is to raise $26,000.
This will be a great night of fun for parents, students, and families. There will be kids' activities, for a nominal fee, which includes face painting, pottery painting, and other fun things to keep them happy throughout the evening. For parents, there will be the live and silent auction, raffle items, and great time to socialize with friends and families. This event is open to Finney families, friends and community members.
Dinner will be complimentary thanks to members of the Board of Directors BUT you must register for dinner here.
There will be a limited number of seats available for dinner; please register quickly. This is the school's largest special event fundraiser, therefore, a suggested donation of $15 per family will be graciously accepted for dinner at the door.
The success of the event is based on the number of donations that are received for the live and silent auctions and also for prizes for the children's activities area. Below are some items we need:
- Stuffed animals - large, medium or small, we want them all! (We will use them for prizes.)
- Gift cards: Amazon, iTunes, Mark's Pizzeria, Starbucks, Duncan Donuts, Visa, Build-a-Bear, Lego Land (We will use these for prizes.)
- Tickets to sporting events/sporting equipment
- Household goods
- Home décor
- Vacation getaways
- Gifts certificates from your favorite spa/restaurant/salon
- Designer items
- Gourmet Desserts/Cakes
- Electronics
Perhaps you work for a company who would be willing to donate an item to the event. Please consider asking them for their support.
Fundraising for the Annual Appeal continues. Please pray how you can support the school's number one fundraising priority. The success of the Annual Appeal and the Annual Spring Auction is critical to growing and strengthening The Charles Finney School. Thank you to those who have made their gift.
Lastly, a special thank you to members of the Board of Directors who are enthusiastically supporting this year's auction and members of the planning committee: Jennifer Latshaw (Silent and Live Auction Chair), Dana Harissis (Raffle Chair), Kathy Smith (On-line Auction Chair), Lolly Pitts (Data Manager), Kathy Relyea (Kids Activities Chair ), and Lisa Geraci (Dinner Chair).

This is an opportunity to meet the 9th grade teachers, hear expectations, view textbooks, receive syllabi, receive a course selection sheet, and ask questions about coming to high school. Invite a friend - this event is open to non Finney family's as well! Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill Service Credit Hours. Some opportunities are periodically posted outside our office. Forms are available on line and in Student Services. Seniors should have received a packet and placed their order to Jostens for their caps and gowns, and any other class specific items. If they did not place an order for their caps and gowns while Jostens was here, it is the family's responsibility to contact Jostens directly and place their order. All caps and gowns need to be sent to Finney. Please contact Student Services with any questions. All Service Credit Hours for seniors must be complete before May 16. If you are unsure of your total hours, check in with Student Services. Be Blessed, Mrs. Slattery Director of Student Services |
 | Finney Athletics | Dear Parents, On behalf of the school's leadership, I want to take this opportunity to thank the parents of Finney athletes. I recognize you make a significant sacrifice of time and financial resources to transport students to games. By the end of the long winter season, parents may feel weary. Yet your sacrifice has a tremendous impact on your child, their team and The Charles Finney School. He or she will remember the time you spent driving, cheering, and encouraging them. Please pray that as Finney continues to grow its student body and financial resources, the school will be blessed with a bus for the Athletic Department. I am pleased to share that Finney now has a parent-led Athletic Committee, organized by Priscilla DeBonis, to organize communication with parents, provide concessions at home games, and create special event fundraisers that focus specifically on Athletics. The ultimate goal of the parent-led Athletic Committee is to raise funds to support athletic teams and facilities. One of the first fundraisers is a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament scheduled for Saturday, March 22 at noon in the school's gymnasium. This is a double elimination format and the cost to participate is $10 per person. Teams should consist of 3 to 4 players. The event is open to male and female students of grade 7 and up, parents, alumni, and community members. Concessions will be available. To register, submit completed registration form and payment to Mrs. Moody in the school office. Lastly, the gymnasium will be closed on Thursday afternoon, April 3 and all day Friday, April 4 to prepare for the Annual Spring Auction, which will be held on the 4th from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be no team practices on April 4th as a way to encourage all families and students to attend this family event. Dinner will provided for a suggested donation of $15 per family but you must register at www.finneyschool.org in order to attend. Once again, thank you for your commitment to The Charles Finney School and the Athletic Department. Serving in Christ, "Coach" Joe Marchand

WITH GRATITUDE!
This year we were very blessed to have our two parent coordinators Sue Ball and Courtney Fantauzzo, who coordinated our Elementary School Valentine's Lunch for our faculty and staff. Our faculty and staff felt loved and appreciated and for that we are truly THANKFUL!!!
ATTENTION MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILIES:
Your opportunity to bless and show appreciation to our faculty and staff is coming up at the End-of-Year Luncheon on JUNE 5th, 2014. Please look for future emails and check our PTO website for more information about how you can help.
