Common Core Statement
| |
"We at the Charles Finney School have been asked often about our stance on the controversial topic of common core. In summary, we have chosen not to incorporate common core standards. It is our desire to rise well above the common core standards. Our curriculum has been mapped out and will be assessed to determine what we need to change or maintain to offer the best academic program possible. Our vision continues to be, that which includes academic rigor presented in a Christian world view. We do not believe that the common core standards and the controversy that surrounds this movement align with our vision."

Welcome to Winter - Rochester Style! I hope and pray that everyone has learned the importance of winter safety and the art of layering clothing. It is important that all of our students leave your houses in the morning with not only a coat but also mittens, hat and preferably a scarf! We have definitely had a harsh winter which challenges each of us to remember all those things that we need to remember for protection of our skin!
Please remind your students about the potential of slipping on "black ice" and wet floors from melted snow. Being careful where and how we walk around school and in our communities.
I am attaching a website pertaining to another large safety issue with our students. That is the concern of use and abuse of over the counter medications. It does focus on how to read a label to find out the active versus inactive ingredients. Please take a minute and review this information and discuss with your children when/if using.
Spring really is just around the corner. Because this is true, we have posted the Sport Permission Forms for Spring sports on the Finney Webpage. Remember, if your student is playing any spring sport, they MUST submit one of these to my office PRIOR to the sport starting. If you have any questions regarding this form or requirements for sports at The Charles Finney School, please do NOT hesitate to call me in my office at 387-3770, ext. 230.
Here's hoping for warmer days ahead! Stay safe and healthy!

The Charles Finney School is part of an on-line fundraising program called "School Mall". The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on line store. We automatically earn a certain percentage of your order. The percentage depends on the particular store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially.
Some of the over 400 merchants include
WalMart
Target
Best Buy
Kohl's
Disney Store
iTunes
Sears
Netflix
Barnes & Noble
Footlocker
Old Navy
Office Depot
AND 100's MORE!
Pass this along to everyone you know and help support the school. The hardest part is remembering to go through the web site www.schoolmall.com. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help.

From the President
Dear Parents,
The next six months will bring a number of positive changes to The Charles Finney School. There are currently four projects the school is busy working through.
The school received a very generous donation to replace our IT infrastructure. By fall 2014 every teacher will have a new computer workstation in their classroom.
The second phase of the IT project will include new reporting software. This new software will replace PowerSchool currently used by the school. It will also aid in the communication of all departments in the school.
Working towards accreditation is our third project. This is one that has been in progress for the past 15 months and will continue into early 2015. This is and will continue to be a huge undertaking, but one that will benefit Finney in so many ways. The most important benefit will be to your children as this process will aide in the formation of an even greater school.
The fourth project is the development of our international program. Finney was recently certified by the government to offer a Student Exchange & Visitor Program (SEVP). This will allow Finney to issue I-20's to foreign exchange students wanting to attend Finney on a F-1 VISA. (long-term academics). Be watching for a letter that will be sent home in March explaining this program in detail and outlining the benefits to the Finney community. There will be opportunities for our students and families to be a part of this special program. There is still more groundwork to be laid over the next few months. Please pray for direction for myself and the Finney Board of Directors.
These are exciting days in the history of the school. We need you to share the good news of God's blessings to all you know. Word of mouth promotion of Finney during our enrollment season is our best marketing tool. We need your help to grow our school. Our board believes and so do I, that God has so much more in store for Finney and will use the students of this school to change the world for Christ.
Serving Him Together,
Mr. VanLeeuwen President |

 | Development Office Update |

(If you are interested in helping - please contact myself, or Charity Curtis in the Development Office).
The 'Choose to be Challenged' campaign is still underway. We had a December goal of $50,000 and raised $36,000 from very generous donors. If you were not able to participate in December, please consider supporting Finney now. The financial support from every segment of our community makes a real impact by transforming key areas of the school. These improvements include new upgrades to our facilities, seeking accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International, adding new science curriculum, and a long-awaited pay raise for staff. This year's total goal for unrestricted annual is $355,000. As of January 15, we have received $131,000 from 157 donors.
Did you know that The Charles Finney School is a United Way of Greater Rochester donor designation agency? If your employer participates in the United Way of Greater Rochester Campaign, consider designating your gift to Finney. Use the United Way Designation Form and indicate Charles Finney Corporate High School donor designation number 2564.
Fundraising is critical to the advancing the mission of The Charles Finney School and integral to private school education. We pray for financial provision for our families who make a sacrifice to provide their children with a Christian school education. You will never regret the investment. Please pray that you will know how the Lord would like you to support His school this semester. Some may be called to give and others to serve. Either way, we need your support for a successful school year.
Serving in Christ,
Mrs. Roman
Director of Development

 | Forever Falcon | Interview with Kirsten Reilly, class of 2008 Armed with a Finney diploma, a dream, and an amazing artistic eye, Kirsten Reilly, class of 2008, started college at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in September immediately following graduation. Moving from Rochester to New York City seemed so glamorous and the best place for an inspiring fashion illustrator. Yet the temptations of being in the Big Apple were too much for this Christian school graduate. She immediately jumped into the lifestyle of parties, superficial relationships, and materialistic living. "When I left Finney, I was confused about my identity and therefore I was easily caught up in all a flashy city has to offer," she said of the fast-paced careless lifestyle that was easy to hide from her family at home because of distance. Exhausted by "fast city living," Kirsten shared the truth with her parents while on summer break. "This is when the walls started coming down," she said. Her life began to radically change. When Kirsten went back to FIT as a junior, she participated and led a campus Bible study where she "saw a lot of brokenness by those studying in the fashion industry." In January 2011, Kirsten decided to participate in The Father's House 21-day corporate fast. "During these three weeks it became strangely clear I was no longer to live in New York City," she said. At the end of the 21 days, the church announced it would be hiring a graphic artist. She applied and while at home during mid-semester break she interviewed and was hired as The Father's House graphic designer. She left FIT two months before completing her degree. Kirsten has never looked back. She considers herself an introvert, and is always looking for new and exciting things to pull her out of her shell. While most people may choose to keep it simple and join a book club or a Zumba class, Kirsten was thinking something much greater. She wanted the Lord to direct her. "When it comes to my relationship with the Lord, I like challenge," she said. "I want to be completely stripped of everything to feel the presence of the Lord." Over the past year she found herself daydreaming about The World Race, a journey to 11 countries in 11 months to serve as the Lord's hands and feet. She brushed the idea off as a fleeting thought. After all, how could she quit a job that is so perfect for her? Yet during her personal devotions time, God kept re-illuminating this idea. Kirsten even found that in conversations with friends, God was making it perfectly clear this was His will. "God put people in my life that, through conversations and text messages, confirmed this was the direction He was leading me." Kirsten was accepted to The World Race, after being enthusiastically encouraged by her parents and pastors, and will begin her 11 month faith journey in July 2014. Although Kirsten stumbled while in college and feels badly that many people knew her as a party girl rather than a Godly woman who developed a strong Christian foundation at The Charles Finney School, Kirsten readily admits that God has transformed her. "My hands are completely open to how He wants to work in me and through me during this journey. My heart is ready and excited for whatever the Lord calls me to do." As for her dream job at The Father's House, that will be waiting for her when she returns from The World Race in June 2015. If you would like to support Kirsten on this journey are learn more about it, you can view her blog at http://kirstenreilly.theworldrace.org/ |
