Italy Art Trip

waving-italian-flag.jpg

I am looking to take a trip to Italy in 2015.  I would like to take at least 6 students, plus any parents that might want to come.  The trip will be an Art trip, and will involve many art related site visits.  We will be going to Florence, Venice, and Rome for 9 days.  The price per student will include everything except lunches, souvenirs, and some tipping fees for our tour guides.  This will be an amazing experience to do more than discuss art, but to see it in person.  We will get a chance to see the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's David, the Roman Coliseum, and many other historic sites...plus do our own exploring.  I am looking to take a group of students that really wants to see art, want to see Italy, and will soak in the experience.  It will be the trip of a lifetime for those who go.  We are going to be doing some major fundraising for this trip, due to the cost.  Every fundraiser will be done as a group, together, not only to raise money, but to make sure we are all comfortable together as a group before we leave for Italy.  If you are interested, please email me at agallagher@finneyschool.org and I will email you a PowerPoint presentation that was put together for the trip.  Please do not wait to email me.  If you are thinking about it at all, please email me.  I am looking to get commitments ASAP.  Think about it, pray about it, and then email me.  I am really excited about this trip and can't wait to see who comes along for this exciting journey!

We do our best to keep them current.  You can find concerts, special events and athletic activities on the calendar.  *Athletic events are SUBJECT TO CHANGE, even on the day of the event - Coach Marchand does his best to update his phone with a message of the sporting events each day as well*

SchoolMall.Com

The Charles Finney School is part of an on-line fundraising program called "School Mall".  The ONLY thing you need to do is go to www.schoolmall.com and enter our school name in the box before ordering from your favorite on line store. We automatically earn a certain percentage of your order. The percentage depends on the particular store. This fundraiser is easy and has great potential to help the school financially.

Some of the over 400 merchants include

WalMart

Target

Best Buy

Kohl's

Disney Store

iTunes

Sears

Netflix

Barnes & Noble

Footlocker

Old Navy

Office Depot

AND 100's MORE!

Christmas is around the corner and millions of dollars of merchandise is ordered on-line. Pass this along to everyone you know and help support the school. The hardest part is remembering  to go through the web site www.schoolmall.com. We earned about $500 dollars last year with no additional effort by our already busy volunteers. We could raise $1,000's of dollars with a little effort on everyone's part. Thanks for your help.

From the President

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  I look forward to all God has in store for the Charles Finney School as we continue to seek to "Do Something Greater" in 2014.

We'll see you back in school on Monday January 6th, 2014.

Serving Him Together,

Mr. VanLeeuwen
From the High School Principal

Happy New Year! I trust you all had a relaxing break and enjoyed time with family and friends!

It is sometimes difficult after a nice break to get back into the school routine. Attendance and timeliness are important factors in school success. Please partner with us and remind your child to get to homeroom and class on time. Please refer to pages 9 & 10 of the Parent/Student Handbook for details regarding the attendance expectations.

For your child's safety, please abide by the following:

*Students MUST leave the school building/campus at the end of the school day. If they have sports/extra-curricular activities or tutoring, they must leave immediately following those activities. No one is allowed to stay and wait for an evening activity. The student must go home and come back later. All students must wait on the front benches for their rides.

December was filled with exciting events. Dr. Burch and his project compassion team put on a Jazz Night to raise money for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. Student and parent volunteers helped make the event a success! Dr. Burch also took a small group of students to Illinois to help with tornado relief efforts. The MS/HS winter concert was absolutely wonderful! Ms. Voldan coordinated a field trip for The High School Band/Orchestra, The Middle School Band/String Quartet, and the MS/HS Choir to perform at a local nursing home. Many of our High School juniors teamed up with the elementary kids for an ice-skating outing at The Frozen Frontier! What a blessing Finney Students are to families in our school and in our community!

Mrs. Lydon went over the PLAN tests with sophomores. A copy was sent home with each student. We have finally received the results of the PSAT and will be going over those results individually with the juniors beginning in January.

It is now time to begin thinking about ordering caps and gowns for seniors and class rings for juniors. Jostens will be visiting junior and senior homerooms on Wednesday, January 15th to explain the ordering process and pass out ordering paperwork. It is IMPERATIVE that students are in homeroom 1/15/14 or they will run the risk of missing the ordering information. If a student does miss homeroom that day, families will be responsible for ordering caps, gowns, announcements, and/or rings on their own. Jostens will return on 1/22/14 to pick up orders during lunchtime.

Upcoming Dates:
*1/17/14
Quarter 2 ends
*1/20/14 NO SCHOOL - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
*1/27-1/31/14 Spiritual Emphasis Week

Blessings for a great month!

Development Office Update

The 'Choose to be Challenged' campaign, the theme for the 2013-2014 Annual Appeal, is the Charles Finney School's top fundraising priority. We are very grateful to those who have already made their gift! To reach December's goal of $50,000, we still need your help.

This year Finney has been blessed with 277 students in grades K-12, an enrollment increase of 5 percent since the 2012-13 year. Sixty-five percent of the student body requires some form of need-based financial aid. Although this need outpaces funded scholarships, our mission is to enroll any student seeking a Christian education regardless of their family's circumstances. For this reason, Finney is always seeking support from parents, alumni, friends, and community members to help support students desiring to fulfill the Lord's plan for their lives.

Finney's desire is to become the leader in independent Christian K-12 education distinguished by excellence in program quality and student success. Finney now offers a greater number of college-credit electives and has added a new state-of-the-art science laboratory for middle and high school students. You will find that the K-8 science curriculum likewise includes more labs and hands-on learning opportunities. Upgrades to our facilities also include a newly renovated cafeteria, which encourages students and faculty to gather as a school community. And finally, Finney continues to provide more mission outreach opportunities within the United States and across the globe.

Why is the 'Choose to be Challenged' campaign so important? It supports every aspect of a Finney education!

If you have not had the opportunity to make your tax-deductible gift, there is still time. You can make your gift by check, by phone using a credit card, or online at CHOOSE to be CHALLENGED and GIVE. Finney can also accept gifts of appreciated securities. Please call Sheila Roman, Director of Development, at (585) 387-3770 ext. 233 for instructions. Remember: to receive tax credit for 2013, your gift must be postmarked or made online by Dec. 31.

Know that your contribution will ultimately have a positive impact. Additionally, and not any less important, your gift can change students' lives as they become part of a Christ-focused, academic community.

Serving in Christ,

Mrs. Sheila Roman

Squibbles from Student Services

lori slattery

I hope your Christmas break was a time of refreshing, and has left you ready for the excitement of a new year ahead.

It is hard to believe that upon our return to school there will be only 2 weeks until the end of quarter 2.  Be sure to check power school regularly.   Please continue to encourage your student(s) to continue on a strong note.

Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill Service Credit Hours.  Some opportunities are periodically posted outside our office.   Service Credit forms are available on line and in Student Services.

Some special reminders for Seniors:

If your senior has not done so already, please have them return their diploma order form to Student Services immediately!

When requesting information or transcripts to be sent to colleges, you must have first applied to that college.  Also, you MUST provide addresses.  Please allow at least 1 week for these requests to be processed.

Applying for Financial Aid?  It starts with completing the FAFSA - the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Visit fafsa.ed.gov for filing information.  Filing begins after the first of the year.

As you receive acceptance letters and scholarship awards, please be sure to give that information to Student Services.

Be Blessed,

What's Happening in Library & Media Center

February 1 begins our Annual Book Drive for the Finney Library and Media Center!  Please donate your gently used books, audio books, magazines, and DVDs by placing them in the Book Drive bin near the main office.  Please, no VHS tapes, cassettes, or textbooks.  If we cannot use your donation on our shelves, the books & materials will be sold at a future book sale to benefit our library.

It's also a great time to clean out kids' drawers and closets, and donate any small, gently-used toys and stickers for our reading incentive program.  Toys might include:  kids meal toys from fast food restaurants; matchbox cars; costume jewelry; small stuffed animals; etc.  Toys and stickers may also be placed in the Book Drive bin.  Thank you!
