*On July 30, 1999, after an 18 month battle with cancer, Peter - then a 14 year old - entered eternal life.  A happy and carefree child, son of Rev. Donald and Sue Boldt, Peter was known for his love for God, his love of worship and his ability to make friends where ever he went. Homeschooled his whole life, Peter excelled academically and in playing the guitar and piano.  He was also an accomplished "Royal Ranger" where he demonstrated his mastery over a number of skills and material.  It is within the scope of such accomplishments, as well as what his impact on this world would have been, that the Peter C. Boldt Scholarship Funds have been established.

THE 6X6 Art Show at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center

gallagher

It has been my pleasure to teach Art here at Finney this year.  It has been an amazing year!  This year, as well as each upcoming year, The Charles Finney School will be involved in The Rochester Contemporary Art Center's 6X6 art show.  6" X 6" pieces of artwork are displayed along with thousands of other pieces of artwork from all around the world.  Since only 6 pieces of artwork are allowed to be included in the show, there are 4 students whose work will be included.  Allie Wehr (9th grade), Jacob Dean (9th grade), Abigail Gallagher (1st grade), and Priscilla Kiptoo (2nd grade), will be included in the show.  Since this is a fundraiser for the RCAC, each one of these works will be for sale, along with thousands of other works of art at the show.  PLEASE COME OUT AND SHOW SUPPORT FOR OUR CHILDREN ON JUNE 1ST, FROM 6-10 PM.  The global online preview begins on May 24th@10 AM, the in-gallery preview is on May 29, 30, and 31st from 1-10 PM.  The opening reception is on June 1st from 6-10 PM and the admission is $5 per individual.  Global online purchasing begins on June 4th at 10 AM.  Each piece is $20.  PLEASE SUPPORT OUR KIDS AND THE ROCHESTER CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER!  SEE YOU ON JUNE 1ST.

Thank you to the entire Finney Community for their support of the Finney Falcons Robotics 1405 Team.  We especially thank the following donors who helped the team win the FIRST Robotic Regional Competition earlier this year and then help us attend the FIRST Robotics World Competition in St. Louis on April 23-27:

Ortho-Clinical Technologies

Penfield Robotics Team 1511

Nearly 650 teams from 37 countries competed in the three levels: FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST Robotics Competition.  The competition was fierce but the Finney Falcons Robotics Team worked hard, competed to the best of their ability, and enjoyed the entire experience.

The Lord completely provided for the team throughout the entire FIRST Robotics season.  The opportunity to witness His hand of provision and guidance was, by far, the greatest experience of the year.

From the President

Dear Finney Community,

I am sure everyone has heard the saying "every time I think it couldn't get any worse it does".....well I have found myself asking the question, "can the next school year get any better than the last?"....and it does! We have been blessed with a great Finney community who sacrifices so much to see that it does get better each year.

April found our little school of Finney competing in St. Louise, Missouri at the First Robotics World Championships; another group was working in the Highlands, NJ area helping to restore a community devastated by the hurricane last October (their fourth trip).  Back at home in Penfield, we had a large group of dedicated volunteers working at our 2nd Annual Spring Auction raising funds to help renovate our cafeteria, all on the same day!

We ended the month of April with a fantastic spring concert. The Middle School and High School choirs joined together, 100 members strong, as we dedicated the last song of the concert, "Be Thou My Vision" to a wonderful couple, Norm and Arlene Leenhouts. Norm has served as the chairman of the board for the past six years. He and his wife continue to support the ministry of the school in so many ways

The month of May will find our community busy as ever. Please check the school website for a complete listing of events. Please remember the teachers in your prayers as they wrap up the last full month of school. It can be a difficult task keeping all the minds focused on work when the weather is so nice outside!

Blessings,

Mr. VanLeeuwen

From the High School Principal

I think I can, I think I can! This must be what all of us are thinking, staff and students alike! It is hard to believe the 2012-2013 school year is coming to a close. Please continue to pray for peace and clarity as we wrap up the last few weeks of school.

The theme for this year's Prom is a Cinderella Ball. It will be held on May 11th at Glendoveers from 6-11 PM. Music will be provided by Showcase Light and Sound.

The Senior Trip is May 12-16th in Orlando, Florida. Please be advised that service hours must be completed and turned in by May 8th in order for a student to attend the trip!

Senior Chapel is scheduled for May 29th. Seniors are required to attend.

Senior Banquet will be held at Glendoveers (2328 Old Browncroft Rd., Rochester, NY 14625) on Thursday, June 6th at 6 PM. The cost of tickets for family members is $20, seniors eat free!

Lastly, graduation rehearsal is also required. It will be held on Friday, June 7th at 10:00 AM at Bethel.

Recap of Upcoming Dates:
5/1/13 Mid-Quarter 4
5/11/13 Junior/Senior Prom
5/12-5/16/13 Senior Trip
5/29/13 Senior Chapel
5/30/13 Freshman Night
5/31/13 HS Awards Assembly

Galatians 6:9 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Blessings for a great month!

Squibbles From Student Services

lori slattery

It has been a wonderful school year - but it's not over yet!  Continue to check power school regularly, and continue to encourage your student(s) to finish strong.  I have seen so much growth in our students from year to year, and this year was no exception.   We have terrific students!

Our Final Exams will be held June 3rd-5th.  The first exam will be from 8:00-10:00, the second exam will be from 10:30-12:30.    Students who only have an exam at 8:00 MUST LEAVE SCHOOL GROUNDS WHEN THEY HAVE FINISHED THEIR EXAM.  Students who only have an afternoon exam CANNOT ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 10:15.   If a student has 2 exams on the same day, I recommend bringing a small snack and drink to have during their break.  There is NO half day busing during exam week.  Students must arrange their own transportation.

Monday 8:00 AM:      English 9 & English 10

Monday 10:30 AM:    Chemistry, Physics, Spanish I

Tuesday 8:00 AM:      Global I & Global II

Tuesday 10:30 AM:    US History

Wednesday 8:00 AM: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry

Wednesday 10:30 AM: Spanish II & Spanish III

Any student taking an AP Exam should have received a letter.  If you are in an AP class and did not receive a letter please contact Student Services immediately.

Our Freshman Information Night will be, Thursday, May 30th from 6:00-7:00 pm.  This is an opportunity to meet the 9th grade teachers, hear expectations, view textbooks, receive syllabi, and ask questions about coming to high school.

NEW THIS YEAR FOR GRADES 9 - 12:

Schedule your classes for next year on-line!

High School families: Be on the look out in early May for an email with details on completing your on-line schedule.   We have popular electives that fill up quickly, and while seniors usually get preference for these classes, re-enrolled students have preference over those who are not yet re-enrolled.

Just a reminder that ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS are required to fulfill 100 Service Credit Hours before graduation.  Hours can be done anytime beginning the summer after eighth grade through the end of their senior year (hours are pro-rated for new students).  A form must be turned in to Student Services within one year from the time the service is complete.  Forms are available on line and in Student Services.  We have a folder with opportunities, and some are periodically posted outside our office.   Juniors in order to be eligible for senior privileges in the fall you must have all but 25 hours of your community service hours completed and documented. Privileges may include late arrival, early dismissal, and lunch & study hall sign out.

IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION:

Senior Chapel is Wednesday, May 29th 9:45-10:30 attendance is mandatory.

All families are encouraged to complete the online FAFSA application (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Deadline for filling the FAFSA is June 30th.

GRADUATION INFORMATION:

The senior banquet will be held on Thursday, June 6th 6:00 pm at Glendoveers Banquet Hall.  Tickets are $20 and are available now in the Main Office for families to purchase. Seniors attend for free.

Graduation Rehearsal will be held Friday, June 7th 10:00 am at Bethel Christian Fellowship.  Caps and gowns will be given out at rehearsal. Gowns will need to be pressed, please use the LOWEST setting on the iron as the material is very delicate and will burn easily.  Attendance at rehearsal is mandatory and will last about 1 ½ hours.

Graduation will be held Saturday, June 8th 10:00 am at Bethel Christian Fellowship.  Graduates need to arrive by 9:00 am.  This is a formal event and graduates are required to dress as such.  No jeans, t-shirts, flip flops, work boots, etc.

God is so good. We could see His faithfulness over and over again while planning last weekend's Spring Auction. Thank you to the entire Finney community for your support! It was a fun day and successful event raising just over $22,000.  Congratulations to Rashimba Phillips, older brother to Finney senior Raishaun Owens, who won the four 5 day Disney World passes.

A special thank you to Dana Harissis, Auction Chair, who was an answer to our prayers last January when it was time to plan Finney's largest special event fundraiser.  Dana, in her very kind and gentle way, immediately answered the call to serve and spent countless hours creating and planning a successful event.  In addition to Dana's leadership, more than 50 volunteers, consisting of parents, faculty, students, and community members were instrumental to ensuring the day was enjoyable for all who attended.

We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the hundreds of businesses that supported the auction.  In the not-too-distant future we will provide families with the list of businesses that support Finney throughout the year.

Lastly, there are three months remaining in the fiscal year and although the school year will end shortly, the development office will continue to fund raise for the Annual Appeal, scholarship support and special projects.  If you have not yet had the opportunity to make a gift to the Annual Appeal, I urge you to make your gift soon.  You can make your gift by cash, check or credit card.  June through September is a difficult time financially for The Charles Finney School, as is the case for most private schools.  You would bless the school immensely with a gift during this period.

Serving in Christ,

Mrs. Sheila Roman

Spring Auction 2013

THE 2013 FINNEY SPRING AUCTION RESULTS ARE IN!

To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. - Philippians 4:20

This verse was in my e-mail devotions today and it was what I wanted to express regarding this year's Auction!

May God have ALL the Glory for the blessings he has given Finney and boy did he bless Finney's efforts!

Thank you Auction Committee Members, Parent Volunteers, Finney Parents, Local Businesses & Auction Attendees! Thanks to all of you the Finney Auction was able to raise over $22,000.

The day started with over 200 Silent & Live Auction items,

Concessions, Kids Games and ended the day with a video,

celebrating Finney's 20 year Anniversary!

Mr. V and Pastor Samme made the Live Auction fun by teaming up to raise almost $7,000.  The Disney Raffle raised over $5,000 and the winner was one of our Senior's brother!

A special thank you to "Priscila's Cookies and More" who not only donated some very yummy desserts but made a cake that looked like Finney!  We intended to eat the cake but was offered a bid for it and since it was a fundraising event, we decided to accept the bid and forgo the calories!   Thank you Priscila!

The day was filled with many blessings and many items from the "Blessing Board" (items that our Finney teachers requested that would help them in the classroom) were purchased.  We know that many Finney Families were away this past weekend and wanted to give you the opportunity to view the remaining items on the "Blessing Board".  If you would like to donate a Blessing Board item, please send in a check along with the item description.  We will make sure to apply it to that teacher's classroom.

Again, THANK YOU for helping Finney raise over $22,000  to go towards renovating the cafeteria.

Forever Falcons

One of our highest callings as Americans is to serve our country in the military. The Charles Finney School has had a number of graduates who have decided to dedicate their lives to do just that.  For Joe Buonaccorso (2008), his motivation to begin a career in the U.S. Navy began as a high school junior at Finney.

Joe's innate initiative and leadership skills were apparent during his tenure at Finney, where he served as class president both his junior and senior years.  He was also a participant for three years in Finney's first robotics program, and played varsity golf and soccer.  His junior year, Joe began the rigorous application process to be accepted into the U.S. Navy Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

"To apply for the US Naval Academy, each candidate must be triple qualified," Joe explains. "I had to pass a physical test, a medical physical, and I had to be nominated by a state senator or congressman.  I was nominated by Rep. Jim Walsh in late 2007.  The Academy then considered my application and accepted me in January, 2008."

One month after graduation from Finney in 2008, Joe entered the Naval Academy and majored in Aerospace Engineering.  During his senior year, he had the distinction of being chosen Battalion Commander, in charge of 750 midshipmen.  It was also during his senior year that he applied for, interviewed, and was accepted into the Naval Nuclear Power Program as a submarine officer.

Upon graduation from the Naval Academy in 2012, Joe trained for six months in Charleston, SC at the Navy Nuclear Power School and for nine weeks at the Submarine Officer Basic Course in Groton, CT.  He is currently training in Charleston, SC, at a training nuclear reactor, commonly referred to as "Prototype."

"I should finish Prototype in late 2013, and report to a nuclear-powered submarine in early 2014 for a 3-year tour as a junior officer," says Joe. "I plan on being stationed at one of our Pacific bases: likely Hawaii, Washington, or Guam."

Thank you, Joe, for serving our country and making us proud!

A CALL TO ACTION

Pastor Mike Peace, a former Finney parent and  longtime friend of Finney,  is in need of condiments and paper plates/napkins for the outreach he does each week in the city of Rochester. This ministry feeds literally hundreds of people each month during the summer. This provides an opportunity to minister to the spiritual needs as well. Please consider donating ketchup, mustard, paper plates, and napkins. There will be a collection bin in the school office.

Yearbook Information

VISIT FINNEY'S SMUGMUG PAGE

high school yearbook

The yearbook is a wonderful way to look back on the year, but not every memory can be found inside. Every year we have far too many great photos that we just dont have room to add in the yearbook. That is why Finney has a SmugMug page, where you can go behind the scenes!

Found at finneyschool.smugmug.com, the Finney SmugMug site allows you to buy never-before-seen photos and posters that are completely exclusive to the SmugMug site for the entire school - elementary, middle and high school!

You can also find your favorite pictures or pages from the yearbook to buy as glossy prints or enormous posters! Not only that, but many photos can be bought as tote bags, t-shirts, puzzles, or even digital files, among other products.

The best part is, all purchases raise money for the Charles Finney School. So whether you want to save memories from the year or support the school, make sure to visit the Finney SmugMug website!

Elementary/Middle School Yearbooks coming soon! Elementary/Middle School yearbooks are here! They are $25. Yearbooks are first-come first-serve and can be bought in the main office. *This year's yearbook comes with small parts (game pieces). These parts will be handed out in a small baggie along with the yearbook. We do not have extras, so be sure not to lose yours!*
