When we enter into a period of weight loss we tend to fixate purely on what the weighing scales say. However, this only tells us what our weight is and there is so much more we can do to chart our journey.
Here are my top 5 ways to measure weight loss success:
1. Weigh yourself weekly on the same set of scales, at the same time of day, either naked or wearing the same clothes. This will give you an accurate indication of weight loss. Any more than weekly and it starts to become a bit obsessional.
2. Measure yourself monthly. Weekly changes in your measurements won't be great, but monthly ones will be far more significant. You decide how much of you you want to measure. With my clients I record bust/chest, waist and hips, plus collar size for men, but weight is held all over the body so it can be interesting to see the change if you also measure upper arms, thighs, calves and above the knee.
3. Fitness levels. I don't mean have regular fitness assessments carried out, I mean things like walking further than you could before (clients get a free pedometer when they join to help them record this), the first time you climb to the top of a flight of stairs in one go without having to break half way, the increase in speed with which you do the cleaning ie what used to take up most of Saturday you can now do in a couple of hours, etc etc. I encourage clients to keep a journal on their LighterLife journey recording all the changes they notice. It not only increases their mindfulness it is also a great record of how far they have come. Always put the date next to the entry.
4. Photographs. Even though you see yourself in the mirror every day, you don't always register just how much your body is changing. I photograph my clients when they first commence the Programme (full length, one photo facing me and one turned to the side in profile) and then again every four weeks. I then email them the photographs and encourage them to set up a separate folder for themselves in My Picture to move the photographs into so they can visually see their journey.
5. Mood. Research has shown that there is a direct correlation between weight increase and a reduction in mood, self esteem and self confidence compared to weight loss and a rise in mood, self esteem and self confidence. Like the recording of fitness levels, stay mindful of how much better you feel as the weight comes off and record what you notice, ie more interest in clothes, make up, hair, smile more, more optimistic about events, etc
It's important to remember that when you embark on a weight loss Programme, weight is the only thing you are losing. You are gaining better health, more energy, better outlook on life in general, all of which you can miss if all you focus on is what the scales say.
I run weekly groups on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for both Men and Women, Total and Lite Programmes plus the Fast option and a support group for Life Members. Everyone is supported in their journey to full awareness and a slim, fit, healthy body.
