Have you ever noticed how skilled you are at putting things off? I'll clean the oven tomorrow, I'll write that report in the morning, I'll give the lawn a final mow before winter at the weekend. How often does tomorrow/the morning/the weekend deadline get missed or put back? It's because we are focussing on the task (which we don't want to do) and not the result.
If we focused on the result we'd be more enthused to get on and do it. Cleaning the oven will result in a feeling of satisfaction and stop that horrible burnt fat smell when it's turned on. Writing the report will get it out of the way and off your mind, and might even make your boss appreciate you that bit more. Mowing the lawn will get the garden tidied up for winter and not look like you are growing it for hay every time you look out of the window. Doesn't mean you are going to love doing it, but, the task is far more likely to get done.
So, what about weight loss? How often have you got despondent about not being able to fit into your clothes, or being overly tired or out of breath, or joints hurting and "wishing" you could lose weight but not actually getting on with it?
In his excellent book on dealing with procrastination called Eat That Frog (you'll have to read it to understand the bizarre title!), Brian Tracy says that "the mark of the superior thinker is his or her ability to accurately predict the consequences of doing, or not doing, something". So, the consequences of not losing weight are, at best, you stay the same, at worst, you get heavier, less fit, unhappier, more despondent and convinced you can't do anything about it. So, that's Option No. 1 - any takers?
Option No. 2 however is that you decide to not only lose weight but also "re-train" the brain to think differently about your approach to food and how you use it so that you change your attitude and lifestyle to keep the weight off. The consequences of Option No. 2 are a slim, fit body, more energy, feeling empowered, liking what you see in the mirror, a wardrobe of modern, on-trend clothes that all fit, raised self esteem and raised self confidence. So that's Option No. 2 - any takers?
If that answer to Option No. 2 is "Yes" then read on my friend:-
