Do the Filters In Your Brain Help or Hinder You?

Whenever we are told something we filter the information we have received through three specific filters in our brain; Delete, Distort and Generalise.

The 'Delete' filter kicks in if we don't like what we have heard, eg "Don't you think you've had enough now?".

The 'Distort' filter then changes the message if it doesn't fit with our understanding, or we don't want it to fit with our understanding eg we know full well we have eaten enough or drunk enough, but we don't want to acknowledge it so we answer "What do you mean?".

The 'Generalise' filter then changes things so they fit with our view of the situation and how we want the world to be eg "Can't leave food on the plate, that will be wasting it - everyone knows that".

Sound familiar?

Imagine a small child who is told "Don't go in that cupboard".  Firstly the child Deletes the word "Don't" then he Distorts it to "Do go in that cupboard" and finally he removes everything from the cupboard and spreads it all around the floor because that is what he does!

How often have you allowed this to happen when it comes to food and drink? The thoughts I mean, not spreading it around the floor!

How often have you started a diet and then started adapting it.  The 25g of somethings distorts to 30g, the "Don't have" becomes "Do have at a weekend on when I'm feeling a bit low" and so on?

Once you accept how something is helping you it reduces the need to Delete, Distort and Generalise.  Once you see how not filtering out the information you are being given results in a slimmer, healthier, happier you the desire to do so reduces.  But this takes time and in a world where we like instant gratification (I want it and I want it now) we don't want things to take time.  Like the toddler mentality, we want it NOW.

Harness in your desire to Delete, Distort and Generalise helpful information about what you eat and drink and you will have amazing results.  It's all your choice.
