What's Holding You Back?

Did you know that according to various studies over the years, the human adult brain has between 60K-80K+ thoughts every single day?  Now, you aren't going to be aware of all of them, if you were you would be exhausted!  Most of them run on an auto pilot basis in the subconscious, and, most of them are helpful thoughts like, "get to work on time", or, "don't run out in front of moving traffic", etc etc, but some of them are not helpful.  Some of them are what are called "Limiting Beliefs" that hold you back.

So, what are they and how did they get there?

A "Belief" about something is created when you have the same thought repeatedly.  I.e. "I can lose weight but I can't keep it off".  If you continue to have this thought over a number of years it becomes even deeper embedded into a "Core Belief" which as far as your brain is concerned is "The Law"!!, not to be challenged or questioned, regardless of whether or not it is true and whether or not it is good for your brain and body.

Again, if this Belief or Core Belief is useful, hang on to it, but, what about all the ones you've created over the years that are not useful, that are hindering your progress in terms of both weight loss and keeping that weight off and welcoming in a new style of healthy living?

These may include:

"I can't lose weight."

"Diets don't work for me."

"All the members of my family are big, so it's inevitable I will be."

"I haven't got time to think about what I'm eating."

"I haven't got time to exercise."

"Holidays don't count - everyone overeats/overdrinks on holiday."

etc etc (this is not an exhaustive list!)"

If you think these enough times you create a Limiting Belief, i.e. a Belief that prevents you from making a healthy change.

Now, if you are happy to stay the same then no problem, but if you're not then the Limiting Beliefs need to change to liberate you from their power and enable you to move forward.

How?  First step is to recognise you are having them.  Most of them will be so deeply ingrained you will think them without realising, but, they will influence what you do and how you feel.

Second step is to change them into appealing, forward thinking, uplifting, desirable thoughts.  So, "I can't lose weight" changes to "I could choose to lose weight, if I wanted to. I just need to find the right plan, programme, nutritional coaching, etc, etc to help me"

So, if we took the Limiting Beliefs listed above and changed them into Beliefs that helped you, they could then look something like this:

"If I stop thinking of my weight management as a 'Diet' all the time I'd stop believing that I am either "On a diet" or "Off a diet" and  instead view it as my new 'Healthy Living' choices"

"Most members of my family are overweight because we are all copying each other's eating habits and eating too much.  I don't have to follow the example of others, I can be unique, change my eating habits and be the person I want to be."

"If I can find the time to eat, I can find the time to think about what I'm eating!"

"Exercise doesn't just mean donning lycra and going to the gym. It can be dancing, swimming, or just plain walking.  I can fit in a brisk walk around the block after work and I can build on it from there"

"Holidays are about the people you share them with, relaxation, exploring, down time - not just about food!"

Then test it out.  When you say it can you see yourself believing it?  Is it balanced and calm (never switch a Limiting Belief for an aggressive, controlling thought i.e. "If I wasn't so lazy and useless I'd lose weight" - how helpful is that going to be!!!).

Ask yourself; "Does this new thought leave me feeling empowered and positive?" - if so, write it down.  If it doesn't, think of another.  If you are a member of LighterLife Loughborough you have access to me for guidance and advice 7 days a week, not just the 1.5 hours a week you spend in your group.  And, that support continues after you have completed the Programme and started the main part of your journey - keeping it off.  How many other diets offer that?

Next, be mindful of every time you catch yourself thinking and saying the Limiting Belief and change it to the new empowered Belief.  You must do this every time though or the old Limiting Belief will start to regain power.  Over time your brain will adapt to the new way of thinking and release you from the negativity and enable you to achieve what you want to achieve.  Success!

None of this is easy on your own though, and that's what makes LighterLife so different.  This is just one example of the work that goes on in the Counselling or Coaching sessions that you get as part of your LighterLife Programme.  The Programme starts at just £7.99 a day - most diets cost around that and all you get is a diet product or guidelines.  We are far from being just a diet product off a shelf and it's why our clients are so successful.

If you want to find out more about the LighterLife Programmes and what we can offer, give me a call on 01509 234433 or email Debbie.ford@lighterlifecounsellor.com or text 07860 017700 (text service only - not a mobile phone).

We'll have an initial meeting that is both free and doesn't obligate you to join so that you can ask whatever questions you wish to enable you to decide if this is the right weight loss solution for you, and then the decision about what you do next is entirely up to you and your new Beliefs!

Payment accepted in either cash or card with a small charge payable for the use of cards.
