Why Diets Don't Work - But LighterLife Does, If You Let It!

A couple of years ago I received a questionnaire through the post from an agency who were tasked with a survey on assessing the nation's habits.  I suspect it was more likely to be an exercise in collecting data that they could then sell on to companies who wanted new distribution lists, however, in the list marked "Hobbies" one of the choices was "Dieting".  Really?? 'Dieting' is now classed as a Hobby?  The more I thought about the traditional attitude to dieting though the more I could see how this could be.

Before I found LighterLife in 2006 I had yo-yo dieted for nearly 18 years and tried every diet going but was still morbidly obese and weighed in at 20 stones, plus, I was on betablockers because my blood pressure was so high (because of my weight) and anti-depressants because I was so unhappy with the way I looked and felt. For those of you in a similar position it won't surprise you at all to know that there are no photographs of me at all at this weight - I became very skilled at dodging cameras!

Generally, my dieting 'hobby' would go like this:

1.  Find the latest diet on the market.
2.  Pick a significant date to work up to, i.e. 1st January, or, after a holiday, or,  before a birthday ending with a zero, etc.
3.  Join - be told my "goal weight" and given the latest "diet plan".
4.  Start diet.
5.  After one week, look at how I could "cheat" on the diet but still get a result.
6.  Realise after two weeks that no. 5 doesn't work.
7  Eat what I want for 5 days and then eat virtually nothing for the two days before "weigh in" so show a half a pound weight loss on the scales.
8.  Go home via the chip shop after "weigh in" - well, I had a full 7 days to "burn off" the chips, so, no problem.
9.  Give up.

Sound familiar?

Sometimes I stuck it out and lost quite a bit, but, once the "diet" had ended and I went back to my old behaviours and habits, eating a large volume of food and choosing types of food that I liked without any thought to what they contained all without making any changes, all the weight returned - funny that.

When I came to LighterLife it was like a light switched on.  Here, not only was the weight loss swift and safe but by not having
"normal" food any more (phew, no more weighing and measuring and kidding myself that that extra 25g of chicken/potato/rice etc wouldn't matter) and getting 100% of top quality nutrition, vitamins and minerals from four packs of nutrition a day, for the first time ever someone was looking at my relationship with weight and guiding me to uncovering why I used food in the way that I did.  Couple that with the education on nutrition and how to calculate the right portion size for your body (there is no such thing as a standard portion size) and my whole outlook to the use of food changed.  It required effort on my part - it's not a "miracle cure" after all, they don't exist, but the more I got out of it the more interested and enthused I became and wanted to learn about this new way of being.

It felt a bit odd to begin with because I was used to eating food, but after a couple of weeks of great weight loss and the nutrition and hydration giving me so much more energy, balanced mood, and great sleep patterns it became a new habit.  I also noticed other things, like, I had so much more spare time.  I hadn't realised how much time was spent, shopping for, cooking and eating food.  Plus, my bank balance was healthier.  I used to kid myself that the only money I spent on food was the weekly shop at the supermarket.  In reality, by the time you added on the takeaway coffee (which was never just coffee but also included pastries or biscuits), sandwiches and snacks throughout the day, lunches from the staff canteen, takeaways in the evenings because I was "too tired to cook", meals out at the weekends etc etc I was easily spending over £100 a week on food and drink without realising it.  LighterLife Total now starts at just £65.40 a week so anyone with a similar expenditure could be saving £34+ a week towards that fabulous new wardrobe of slim clothes.

The LighterLife Total Programme follows a very simple three step process.

Step 1.  Abstinence from conventional food and taking all your nutritional needs from four packs a day from a range of 16 delicious choices, until you reach a healthy BMI you are happy with.  This is a range from 20 to 25 BMI which for most people is about a two stone difference.  No more having to achieve a prescriptive goal weight - the key here is health, not skinny and you decide when you are happy with the way you look.  During this phase, you commit to staying in total abstinence and to purchasing a full set of packs plus a weekly fee every week with no missed weeks.  You attend your group counselling sessions (not diet meetings) once a week to commit to learn more about your attitude to food, the habits you have created and how to remove the ones that don't help.  The sessions are small select groups of people following the same Programme.  Men and women have separate groups and there are never more than 11 in a group. New Room April 13 The premises are comfortable and relaxed with ample free car parking.  All weight recording is carried out in private in a separate office and there is no sharing of weight losses with the rest of the group.  You are treated like the Adult you are, not a child.

Step 2.  Once you have achieved your healthy BMI you transfer to the Management Phases.  There are 8 Phases and you gradually reduce the number of nutrition packs you are having a day and start to slowly re-introduce food a food group at a time whilst receiving a whole education about nutrition, GI principles, food groups, volume size, frequency of eating and drinking together with lots of delicious recipes.

Step 3.  The most important step.  The one that traditional diets completely ignore as their focus is purely on the weight loss - Keeping It Off!  Once you've completed Steps 1 and 2 you have access to help and support from me whenever you  need it and however long you need it for as you introduce your newly found knowledge and insights into your life to keep the weight off forever.  Yes it requires effort and commitment, but it is so worth it.  I lost 6.5 stones in 5.5 months and was able to ditch the Betablockers and Anti-depressants six months after completing Step 2 and have never looked back.

Not only will you have lost your unwanted weight, you will have banished those old "dieting" habits, learned how to commit to a set of boundaries by staying in abstinence from food and committing to a weekly attendance and payment structure and gained a whole wealth of knowledge you didn't have before.
