Last week I sent out a newsletter about changes to opening times and an overview of the groups I run and I included "NEW" in the title. That newsletter had more people opening it than any other newsletter I've ever sent out. Now, it may be that the thought of LighterLife Loughborough being more accessible sent a frisson of excitement through Loughborough and the surrounding villages, in which case, great! But, it is more likely because that little three letter word is a powerful 'hook' to our emotions.
"New" implies fresh, exciting, a wonderful promise of something better. When it comes to weight loss, weary yo-yo dieters can view it as being "the diet I've been looking for", the one that will "work" for me this time. A bit like perceiving that the perfect job or the perfect partner are out there somewhere, they just need to be found. We can be fooled into thinking that the perfect diet does actually exist, one where the weight just drops off with no effort and then miraculously stays off even when we know we have returned to the old habits of over-eating, over-drinking and a sedentary lifestyle that put the weight on in the first place.
How great would that be? But of course the intelligent Adult voice inside us knows that doesn't exist - just like the Tooth Fairy and Peter Pan, they are figments of our imagination. If the body is given more calories than it needs, it will store them in fat - it isn't any more complex than that. And, if we have been overweight in the past, our bodies will have created lots of new fat cells to accommodate the fat and whilst those cells have been drained of fat during the weight loss period they don't reduce in number, just size. So, if we start to consume more calories than our bodies need those multiple fat cells are just sat there waiting to be filled up again, which is why weight goes back on faster the second time because the body isn't having to create new fat cells. However, before you all get too despondent and start reaching for something to snack on for comfort, there is a new way of being that does work. I t's a way that every other diet misses because they are too focused on the weight loss and not on changing the habits, thoughts and beliefs that led to the weight gain in the first place. The New and Improved way of both weight loss and maintaining that weight loss is to understand why you over ate or over drank in the first place and the reasons why. Most new clients I ask this question of respond with quite a blunt "Oh well, I know why - I just love food". That's what's known as a 'cop out' question. It's usually delivered in a quite strong, "that's the way I am, move on to the next question" type of voice, but of course it isn't a reason at all, just a statement of belief that prevents them from changing. Have you ever heard that quote "If you do what you've always done you'll get what you've always got" and how many times have we ignored this and kept on doing stuff that we know isn't any good for us (jobs, relationships, eating habits, etc etc) stuck in the same old routine but desperately hoping we are going to get a different result this time. Why don't we change? Sometimes we are frightened to, sometimes we just simply can't bothered, or, we perceive that it's going to be too difficult or dangerous, so we stay where we are hoping for something new to turn up that's going to solve all the problems. Well, what if there is a company out there which does have a different approach, that can help you find a new way, a new attitude, a new result and then help you to retain that new result - how great would that be? And what if you could make the most tentative of steps towards all that wonderful newness by just chatting to someone about it and finding out what it entailed before making any commitment at all to trying? How great would that be. Well there is. And what's more you know there is because at some point you have shown an interest in LighterLife and that is why you have got this newsletter and, hopefully, are still reading it!LighterLife is genuinely different.
