Education Key to Museum Mission |
|
The National Museum of World War II Aviation (NAMOWWIIA) and the Colorado Consortium for Earth and Space Science Education (CCESSE) in Colorado Springs have agreed to combine their expertise to create a pilot program for the benefit of K-12 formal education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Supplementing the formal classroom learning experience with real world applications and hands on challenges is the directive of NAMOWWIIA and has long been the mission directive of the Challenger Learning Center. Combining our efforts to inspire students in STEM career options ultimately increases the STEM workforce pipeline and Americas position in science and technology research and development.

Under our recently signed agreement, we have funded and put in place a team of WWII aviation experts along side experienced formal school system educators to create hands-on lessons and activities that will bring the technological advances of WWII to the current math and science studies needed by today's student. This will allow students to apply the needs of American innovation as seen during WWII to their personal futures through continued studies in STEM subject areas. Together we are writing the syllabus and working with local school systems to expose students to this unique aviation and history campus with its varied and changing learning opportunities.
This is our first step in bringing a new educational environment to our existing K-12 structure in Colorado Springs. We anticipate this model could be replicated throughout the nation. The National Museum of World War II Aviation is excited about bringing home front history, WWII technologies, and the extraordinary efforts of the greatest generation into a potential long term relationship with the Colorado Consortium for Earth and Space Science Education for the ultimate benefit of our formal K-12 education system in southern Colorado.
This program could not have come to fruition without the insight of key community and business leaders who recognize the need to supplement our formal STEM education system with historical background and hands on interactive opportunities to reinforce the classroom learning experience. The vision and generous support of our sponsors including Mr. Joe Woodford, Mr. Tad Goodenbour, Perkins Motors, Ent Federal Credit Union, and the United States Air Force Academy K-12 STEM program will allow NAMOWWIIA and CCESSE to bring teacher led school groups to this exciting and innovative educational experience at no cost to our K-12 school systems.
If you would like to help support our efforts to bring STEM and history alive through this unique experience, please contact NAMOWWIIA at (719) 637-7559 or contact Mr. Bill Klaers at bill@worldwariiaviation.org
If you would like to review our curricular and schedule a class of students, please contact Ms. Deb Haase at (719) 598-9755 or dhaase@clccs.org |

Shirley Brandt of Ashton, Iowa, wrote "I was pleased to receive the newsletter from the aviation museum and was excited to see the PT-19 in one of your pictures. I was married to Fred V. Brandt for two years and we flew this plane from Toledo, Iowa, to Arlington, Texas, and back in 1982. Being in the museum is a fitting place for this plane. Thanks for the memories."
