After months of work, volunteers took time to reflect on the significance of the National Museum of World War II Aviation as both a museum with artifacts and an important story to tell as well as an educational environment with the mission of inspiring visitors in science, technology, engineering and mathmatics. Tying the museum grand opening with a reunion of the 39th Fighter Association attracted many World War II veterans who were able to mingle with our volunteers and members of the Colorado Springs community.
The excitement is high because this Phase 1 opening exposes visitors to our Colorado Springs airport site where they can see the work that has been accomplished and be briefed on the vision and design for the Phase 3 structures yet to be built. Visitors also experience a docent led tour which addresses America's phenomenal home front effort to supply and support the war effort taking place in Europe and Asia. Our expert docents come from military and history backgrounds bringing a wealth of knowledge to the significance of each display (And there are many displays).
The tour culminates with a visit to WestPac Restorations where World War II aircraft are under extensive restoration using the skills and tools available during the war. We have included touch screens and videos throughout the museum to supplement the visitors experience.
Since opening, we have received some important donations from World War II veterans and their families. In future newsletters, we will share information about specific gifts which may be of interest.
The Museum hangars also include space and equipment for volunteers to perform restorations on artifacts, aircraft components, and period vehicles used in support of the fighter and bomber forces. Expect to hear about those restorations in the future. Your best option, however, is to come and take the tour on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. Times, pricing, and specific directions are on our website at www.worldwariiaviation.org. Our exhibits are constantly being improved based on donations, visitor input, and our volunteer exhibit coordinators. This is much more than a museum and one tour cannot do justice to the many things to be experienced and learned. Sign up for your tour soon on our website. Be an ambassador for the National Museum of World War II Aviation by spreading the word to your friends and neighbors. |
