Walk with a Doc
Est. 1967

Good morning! Hope your week has been treating you well. Friday!

We have some exciting news.

We're changing the date that Walk with a Doc was started.

Our team has been reading up on some great events of the 20th century (end of the Civil War, opening of Disneyland, the first Starbucks, first McDonald's, etc). They all have one thing in common.

They occurred on cool dates - 1969, 1955, 1971...

Dates when men were MEN and women were WOMEN!

Back in 1967 we had MLK, Sinatra, Mantle, Cronkite, Gandhi, Lincoln, Edison, Oprah, Van Gogh - people at the ABSOLUTE top of their field.

They had cool cars like the '67 Mustang and cool hangouts like The Stardust.

Our first WWAD was 2005.

2005? We might as well write in in pink.

2005 is Hannah Montana, yellow sweetener packets, and Alex Rodriguez.

Not me, not the walk.

We're changing our established date to 1967. There are a few reasons why we are moving on this now:

1)  We're just getting started; good idea to change before people start asking a lot of questions. For example, I'm not even sure I've told Rachael when we started yet.

2)   Instant credibility. Better to have been around 47 years than 9. Shows staying power.

3)   Rather than freak out about what we do to recognize the Walk's 10th anniversary next year, this gives us a few years to focus on really nailing our 50th.

4)   Est. 1967 sounds cool. Moon landing coming up, free love. Steve McQueen.

Walk leaders: you may get a couple questions:

"Huh, you guys have been around since 1967 Dr. Smith? How come I've never heard of you?"

You could say something like,

"WOW those are nice socks! That reminds me, how are your kids?" People LOVE talking about their kids.

This whole switch thing isn't as easy as it sounds.

When we do things at WWAD World HQ, we're all in.

We've spent the last 6 days rubbing teabags over our bylaws, our code of regulations, all 128 contracts, burning their edges, then rewriting them with my genuine quill feather ink pen.

We had to throw out all our computers - think about it - Jobs/Gates probably got started in the 70's. We were established in '67.

I've been having our interns manually rewind our HQ clocks over and over and over again.

365 (days) x 2 (12 hr cycles) x 46 (years) that's a ton of winding. The argument has been that no one will notice; the clock doesn't have a date. Again, that's not the way we operate. All in.

I haven't told too many people about this so please let me know if you have any concerns. Otherwise, the first walk was April 15th, 1967. I checked, it was a Saturday.

Yeah, if we could also try and keep this just between you and me. Chance it may bother a couple people.

WWAD Helps Your What?
One more thing

You've probably seen the list of 100 things that walking does for you? Well, call me Judy and make it 101. Anne VanBuskirk shared this NYT article with us on what regular physical activity can do for your eyes. Seriously, start thinking of stuff that moderate activity is not yet known to help, b/c it's going to change. #miracledrug
