Walk with a Doc Newsletter

Good morning! Around WWAD HQ we've found Friday the 13th's to be lucky, we hope you have found the same.

Do you like apples? They're everywhere right now, they're delicious, and they're really good for us. Here are nine reasons why.

9. Respectable amount of fiber (pectin) - 4 grams. This decreases our LDL (bad cholesterol) by blocking the receptors.
8. You get all the fiber for only about 95 calories. Everybody in the world (self included) is telling us to cut our dinner portions in half and save it for tomorrow night. Easier said than done, right. Apples can help - they fill us up - all for 95 kcals.
7. The peel has ursolic acid (makes us slim). Ursolic acid lowers obesity, increases our kcal burn, increases our brown phat (good thing), and increases our muscles (never bad).
6. Five a week will improve our lung function. Seriously? Yes - it's the quercetin.
5. Vitamin C - it has 8 mg - improves our immune system (Hey, have you received your flu shot yet? Here's a good one - get it at work, and when you do, scream like a 2nd grader after they deplunge. The nurses (and physician partners) love it. Seriously, good stuff.
4. May fight cancer - yup. Had to read it a couple times, but the French did a study in '04 that showed a decrease in colon, liver, and breast CA. What have we got to lose, right?
3. They keep doctors away.
2. Study last year showed a decrease in diabetes related to apple consumption. The anthocyanins (make things red, blue, and purple) are looking like responsible party.
1. Brain Power - definitely increases it. If you think about it, don't you feel smarter after eating an apple? It increases our acetycholine which plays a role in improving memory and helping in the fight against Alzheimer's.

The Big Give!!
Tuesday, September 17th

Our mission is to fight and reverse the epidemics of coronary disease, diabetes, breast cancer, strokes, and so much more. Together, we do this with our volunteer partners by starting Walk with a Doc's all across the country, including your neighborhood.

This upcoming Tuesday, thanks to a generous matching program provided by The Columbus Foundation, we can all move even closer to achieving our dream.  Tuesday's special edition newsletter will also include FREE Jeni's Ice Cream* (voted best in US by USNWR) and FREE Piada!

Office Posture Matters: An Animated Guide
Fun Video
Office Posture

I know, I know...Is there anything out there that can even approach the thrill of office posture? Actually, they did a really nice job with this animated video and after watching this week, I swear I feel an inch taller.

Have a great weekend. The weather is cooling off...perfect for some football, apples, and a nice walk.
By the way, how are you rewarding yourself for getting 150 minutes of activity each week? You should pick something, you deserve it.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
