Portland Insight Meditation Center
Deepening Practice
A one-year program of practice and study of
Mindfulness Meditation as taught by the  Buddha
in the
Satipatthana Suttra

Are you ready to make a more significant commitment to your inner life? If so, this year long training will provide a community and teachings for your journey.

The heart of this training will be your commitment to regular meditation practice, mindfulness in all the activities of life, the practice of the precepts and the development of generosity.

Participants will finish the year with a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice of Mindfulness Meditation. This will include sitting meditation  and the integration of meditation into every life activity.

Core components:

1. I have for five years been studying under the guidance of Matt Flickstein. Matt has been teaching Dharma for decades and was instrumental in assisting Bhante Gunaratana in founding the Bhavana Society in West Virginia.  He is the creator of the documentary With One Voice. Matt has provided fifty contemplations designed for this year long training.  Each week one of these contemplations will be e-mailed to you for your reflection.

2. Each weekly contemplation will be paired with chapters from Joseph Goldstein's book: Mindfulness.  there will also be a link to a one hour Dharma talk by Joseph from the series of forty three talks  from which Joseph crafted the book.

3. Each participant will have a half hour meeting with Robert once a month.

4. Participants will be encouraged to have a student partner within the Deepening your Practice group for ongoing conversation and support.

5. The group will begin with weekly meetings on Wednesday evening (7 - 9 pm) for three weeks and thereafter, once per month. (January 28th, February 4th and 11th, March 4th, April 8th, June 24th, July 8th, August 5th, September 9th, November 11th, and December 9th.)

6. There will be three non-residential one day retreats at PIMC. These retreats will extend from Friday evening at 6 PM - 9 PM, and Saturday 9 AM until 4:30PM. (February 27th and 28th, May 22nd and 23rd, November 27th and 28th.)

7. Readings: There will be readings requiring approximately one hour per week which will include the following books:

Satipatanna Suttra

Buddhism Without Beliefs: Stephen Batchelor

Forgive For Good by Frederick Luskin

The Power of Mindfulness: Nyanaponika Thera

Lovingkindness: Sharon Saltzburg

True Refuge:  Tara Brach

8. Participants will be encouraged to participate actively in the meditative and social life of the center.

1. Participants are requested to commit to the entire year of the program.

2. A minimum of an hour a day will be required to engage with the contemplations and to maintain a formal practice.  The reading assignments will require an additional hour per week.

3. Participants will write a monthly, one-page response to a question provided by Robert concerning how the training is affecting their lives and how mindfulness is emerging in their daily life.

4.  The financial commitment for the training is $900 if paid in full prior to the start of classes.  If you would like to make monthly payments, the cost will be $90 per month.  Because PIMC wants the teachings accessible to all, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. If cost will create an obstacle to your participation please contact Kate - pimc.kate@gmail.com.

I understand that this is a large commitment and I hope you will consider carefully whether it is something that is truly in alignment with your life at this time.
