Youth capture their dreams in images

"Many of the children's hopes and dreams are for their mother's which is really sweet, it seems like everyone wants to buy their mom a house."
-- Housing Program Manager
"I hope for my little sister to grow up healthy" -- Malachi, age 11

Fifteen children from Our Family's housing programs have been selected to capture their dreams with a camera through the Pictures of Hope program. Pictures of Hope is a photography program for children, created by photojournalist Linda Solomon and sponsored nationally by Chevrolet, and locally by our friends at O'Rielly Chevrolet. Our Family has participated in the program since 2011.
Pictures of Hope engages children ages 7-12, who are residing with their families in Our Family's housing programs. Children will brainstorm a list of their hopes and dreams and learn simple photography skills during a tutorial presented by Linda Solomon. At the end of the session each child is surprised with a digital camera to keep and given their first photography assignment - to capture images representing their hopes and dreams with the help of an adult mentor. This year, volunteer mentors for Pictures of Hope include Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and KVOA News 4 reporters Kristi Tedesco, Matt Brodie, and Lupita Murillo, among others.
Our Family Housing Program Manager, Kim Cook, describes how Pictures of Hope impacts the youth and the Tucson community: "The program motivates the children and allows them to talk and think about their future, something they normally don't do. It's a day where they are in charge and the experience makes them feel special and important," she says. "Additionally, the Pictures of Hope program gives the community a chance to see that the kids in our programs are no different than any other kids. They all have the same hopes and dreams, want the best for their family and aspire to go to college."
Greeting cards featuring the children's photos will be available for sale in November to benefit Our Family Services. To purchase Pictures of Hope cards created by children in Our Family's homeless programs last year click here.
