RSVP now for Peer Mediation Training of Trainers

Our Family logoTeachers, school administrators, counselors and others who work in education are invited to take Our Family Services' upcoming Peer Mediation Training of Trainers from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 3 and 5 at 3830 E. Bellevue Street. Cost of the two-day training is $25. Participants must attend both days of the training to receive a certificate of completion.

Peer Mediation is a program by which students learn communication skills and a conflict-resolution process to help their peers work out disagreements in a peaceful and reasonable manner. Participating schools report that office referrals and student suspensions are significantly reduced when students are actively involved in their own conflict-resolution processes. Teachers, counselors and administrators spend less time solving squabbles and serving as disciplinarians, and tension among staff and students is reduced.

Topics to be covered in this training include:

  • Facilitation skills
  • Understanding conflict
  • Negotiating feelings and conflict
  • Communication skills
  • Teaching the mediation process
  • Implementing a Peer Mediation program
  • Coaching and evaluating peer mediators

The training will be facilitated by MaryJane Gibson, a mediator since 1993 who has worked as an educator and trainer for more than 35 years.
