Greetings!
The Alamo Service Connection (ASC)---- the Aging and Disability Resource Center for the AACOG region---- would like to provide you with the following newsworthy information. Our goal is to have an informed community that promotes personal choice and is connected to long term services and supports. |
DELIVERING QUALITY OF LIFE FOR OLDER ADULTS: THANK A SENIOR CENTER TODAY!
September is National Senior Center Month!
(by Siena Lindemann)
A few months into my job at Bexar Area Agency on Aging, I was lucky enough to attend the opening of the District 2 Senior Center in San Antonio. I brought with me one of the Alamo Service Connection call center Care Specialists. Despite having spent many hours answering senior questions and arranging assistance for caregivers of seniors, the Care Specialist had never been able to visit a Senior Center.
As we toured the different halls of the center, her reaction, like mine, was: "WOW! I didn't know that that Senior Centers provided that!"
Each and every day, the dedicated staff and volunteers at senior centers around the Alamo Region arrive early and stay late to ensure that older adults have a fun, educational, social, safe and COOL (in the summer!) place to enrich their lives. Thanks to the Older Americans Act, free and nutritious meals are available, as well as more traditional activities such as lotteria and bingo.
But today's senior centers do so much more! Zumba, billiard tournaments, one-on-one Medicare counseling, computer training, professional art courses, classes on managing chronic disease, formal dance galas, and financial planning are just a few of the services available - not to mention the listening ear and senior issue expertise of the paid and volunteer staff.
On 100 degree days outside...when a meal provided means the monthly budget goes a bit further... when an exercise class prevents a fall...when an on-site nurse checks a blood pressure...when friends made at the center reach out and eliminate loneliness and depression...senior centers literally save lives every day.
On behalf of the Area Agencies on Aging for the Alamo Area: THANK YOU to the hard-working personnel and senior centers during National Senior Center month and throughout the year! |
September is Falls Prevention Month
The 7th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day will be observed on September 23, 2014-the first day of fall. This year's theme, Strong Today, Falls Free® Tomorrow, seeks to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults. Since Falls Prevention Awareness Day was first observed in 2008, participation in the event has grown from 11 states to 47 states and the District of Columbia.
Every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an Emergency Department for a fall-related injury. Nationally, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65 and over. Moreover, the chances of falling and being seriously injured in a fall increase with age. (NCOA press release Sept. 2014) No more Falls Texas will host a kickoff celebration on September 17th at the Barshop Community Center (click here for flyer)
The National Council on Aging (NCoA) published this flyer illustrating six steps to prevent a fall. Download this flyer by clicking the following links:

The AEP is from
October 15th thru December 7th each year. Changes made during the AEP will become effective on January 1.

The National Council on Aging (NCoA) says "Medicare pays for many preventive services, including vaccines, but the coverage rules and frequency can be confusing. In our newest fact sheet, we outline the commonly recommended vaccines for people with Medicare, which part of Medicare covers those vaccines, and where to find more information on vaccination schedules and coverage rules." Fall brings us cooler temperatures, thoughts of autumn leaves, and the FLU. It has been recognized for many years that people 65 years and older are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu compared with young, healthy adults.

The goals of this program are:
-
to improve the physical health of Texans -
to provide opportunities for volunteerism with older adults and people with disabilities -
to create awareness of aging issues and resources offered through the Age Well, Live Well partners and the aging and disability network -
to engage in community collaborative partnerships that benefit everyone.

This month, Age Well Live Well is sponsoring Síclovía on Sunday, September 28th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
What is Síclovía?
Síclovía is a free event that turns major city streets in to a safe place for people to exercise and play. The streets become temporarily car-free for about 5 hours on a Sunday for families to run, ride bikes, take exercise classes and enjoy their city streets.
The modern day Cíclovía originated in Bogotá, Colombia 30 years ago. Bogotá began their program with 8 miles of open streets. Cíclovía was so popular, today, they open over 70 miles of car-free streets to their citizens and connect city parks to provide green spaces for Reclovías.
Learn more at siclovia.org (click here for an event flyer)
The next Age Well Live Well meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 12th, 1:30 pm at AACOG.

Veterans Corner
The mission of the Alamo Service Connection (ASC) is to connect both seniors and people with disabilities to services in our area. San Antonio is home to a large population of retired and disabled veterans. We have several programs that specifically serve veterans. In addition, the ASC helps veterans find other community services.
Sometimes it takes special effort to find the help that is needed. On August 3rd, 2014, members of Journey Church SA life group worked with our veteran program and provided much needed lawn service to a local veteran. (click here to read the full story)
For more information on our Veteran programs please call the ASC at (210) 477-3275 or toll free at 1-866-231-4922
