STAR+PLUS Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Provider Training
Date: Monday, June 10, 2014
Time: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Location: Alamo Area Council of Governments, Al J. Notzon III Board Room, 1st Floor, 8700 Tesoro Dr., Suite 700, San Antonio, Texas 78217
Beginning September 1, 2014, certain individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are covered by Medicaid will receive their basic medical services, or acute care, through a STAR+PLUS managed care health plan. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is holding provider trainings across the state to educate providers who serve individuals with IDD on STAR+PLUS managed care and what changes to expect.

The A-B-C-Ds of Medicare from Bexar and Alamo Area Agency on Aging

If you work with adults or seniors with disabilities and you want to learn more about Medicare & Medicaid related services - this is the training for you. We will help you understand Part A, Part B, Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans), Part D (Prescription Drug Plans) and Medicare Supplements (Medigap insurance). We will also cover the federal Medicare Savings Program, the Low Income Subsidy program (Extra Help), Long Term Care services, and Senior Medicare Patrol/Financial Exploitation.

Health Insurance Navigators Assist in
Affordable Care Enrollment
AACOG Navigators have assisted 2,706 individuals enroll in affordable health insurance under a grant awarded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Over 90% of enrollments occurred in the second quarter of the grant year ended March 31st. Almost one half of enrollees speak languages other than English and 44% live in communities outside of Bexar County.
All Navigators participating in the program have meet stringent new certification requirements established by the Texas Department of Insurance.
This grant will conclude on July 31, 2014 and the Alamo Area Council of Governments will have the opportunity to apply for a second year grant through CMS. |
Social Security Administration Launches Social Security's Disability Education and Awareness Initiative
The Social Security Administration has launced a new education and awareness initiative "The Faces and Facts of Disability".
Through this campaign, the intent is to educate the public about the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. To learn more about the campaign, www.socialsecurity.gov.

The New Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
The new Veteran Health ID card provides for increased security and a salute to the veterans military service. The emblem of the veterans latest branch of service will be displayed on the card.
The VHIC replaces the Veteran Identification Card (VIC) and will be issued only to Veterans who are enrolled in the VA health care system.

Seeking Community Support
Bravo for ArtAbility, Never Too Old to Create!, is a competition for local/aspiring artists whereby we encourage, inspire and engage seniors of all ages to discover and awaken the artist within.
This Public Event will take place on Friday, September 12, 2014 from three o'clock to eight o'clock p.m. with an Awards Ceremony at six o'clock p.m.
This community initiative will not be possible without the generous support of people and organizations that care about elders in the community. Therefore, we are actively seeking sponsors to donate award gift card prizes, food and beverage items, or other monetary donations to help defray the cost of the event.
