BREAKING NEWS - Announcing the appointment of Gavin Lai


 

We are pleased to welcome Gavin Lai. Gavin joins the Corney & Lind team as a Senior Associate. He was admitted as a Solicitor in 2005.


He has extensive experience in Family Law, especially with complex commercial and property arrangements and binding financial agreements, having previously worked in Brisbane's top specialist family law firms.


 
Gavin assists clients to remain focused on the "big picture" and achieving the  most economical overall outcome, rather than allowing matters to become entrenched in the emotive conflict that disputes often involve.

 

Gavin is married with two young children, a deeply Christian man and actively involved in the leadership of his local church. Our Family Law team now includes: Gavin Lai (Senior Associate), Fiona Manderson (Senior Associate), James Tan (Lawyer) and Zoe Earl (Law Clerk).

Under the  Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth), a person who has been unfairly dismissed has rights and remedies because of the dismissal. Possible remedies to an unfair dismissal include monetary compensation and reinstatement. However, a dismissal will not fall into the definition of an unfair dismissal if it was a case of a genuine redundancy. To read what is meant by a genuine redundancy click here.

Business Clients - Increasing Giving via Discretionary Trusts

Let's say you decide to give $1000.00 to your church. If you give this out of income that you personally derive, you would have first paid tax on the income and therefore, (assuming a tax rate of 30%) would have to earn approximately $1500.00 to give $1000.00. 

 

If the gift was given by a discretionary trust, the trust could simply give the $1500.00. Giving has increased by 50%. I'm sure you are wondering how, so click here to find out more.
