About MPI
Montana Policy Institute is a non-profit free-market think tank focused on "flipping the switch" from government dependence to free people and free enterprise. We provide credible nonpartisan expertise and analysis to help Montanans advocate for policies that are based on a respect for individual freedom, an expectation of personal responsibility, and the idea that government intervention should be an avenue of last, rather than first, resort when addressing public policy challenges. "Since there is no such entity as "the public," since the public is merely a number of individuals, the idea that "the public interest" supersedes private interests and rights can have but one meaning: that the interests and rights of some individuals take precedence over the interests and rights of others." - Ayn Rand |

Reason Foundation/MPI Study: "The Limits of Wind Power" (Oct. 2012)
MPI and the Reason Foundation analyze claims about the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of wind power.
As Montana's Renewable Portfolio Standard requires electric utilities to obtain more and more generation from "renewable" sources like wind, policymakers must reevaluate the economic and environmental benefits. Wind blows at speeds that vary considerably, leading to wide variations in power output at different times and in different locations. To address this variability, power supply companies must install backup capacity, which kicks in when demand exceeds supply from the wind turbines; failure to do so will adversely affect grid reliability. The need for this backup capacity significantly increases the cost of producing power from wind. Since backup power in most cases comes from fossil fuel generators, this effectively limits the carbon-reducing potential of new wind capacity. For full study, see below.

MPI's 3rd Biennial Legislative Forum - November 16 & 17, 2012

MPI's 3rd Biennial Legislative Forum will be held on November 16 & 17, 2012 at the Great Northern Hotel in Helena. We had over 150 attendees in 2010 and expect even more this year as Montana legislators and taxpayers prepare for the 2013 session. The afternoon session on Friday the 16th is reserved for legislators only, but the dinner on the 16th and the Main Session on Saturday morning, the 17th, are open to all. We are pleased to have The Wall Street Journal's Stephen Moore as our dinner keynote. As always, we're bringing in guest speakers from across Montana and the US to provide analysis and ideas for providing free market answers to our policy challenges. Early registration is highly encouraged. Check our our event page for more details and to register!
