Greetings!
March may have been a rainy month but it did not stop our PPLAC photographers from venturing out to get those great shots!
We started the month out with a PPLAC outing led by John Grusd to the Annenberg Space for Photography. It was a beautiful day for walking around the lawn and viewing the featured exhibit of National Geographic photographer Franz Lanting who presents his interpretation of life on earth from the big bang to the present. The exhibit was entitled, "LIFE: A Journey Through Time".
Our next outing was a PPC, Professional Photographers of California FunDay led by Sharon Lobel in Borrego Springs. This was an over night trip for photographing star trails, magnificent iron sculptures and the tons of blooming wildflowers along the desert floor. If you missed it...no worries, there will be more PPC California FunDays ahead.
PPLAC's first Digital Photographic Competition of the year proved we have some amazing photographers among us! Congratulations to Rusty Nelson for his "Best of Show" winning image, all the "Best of Category" and Merited winners!
April is packed like an over stuffed suitcase with tons of photo opportunities! Join us for one or for all events! April 3rd is the Metro Red Line outing with John Grusd; April 8th is "Making Templates and Photo Cards with Karen Nakamura, April 13th is "Nuts & Bolts of Lightroom" with Rusty Nelson and then April 28th is our general meeting with speaker Tim Mathiesen. So mark your calendar!
If you've ever received a score of 79, you don't want to miss the next general meeting on April 28th. This presentation, "There is Life after a 79!" by Tim Mathiesen will examine the process and results of professional image competition at the local, state, regional and international levels. Tim will review images from the PPA Loan Collection and discuss the theories of the "12 Elements" and their foundations that make up the process of image competition. Tim will cover how judges evaluate each image and review the scoring process so that each image is judged fairly and completely.
May will feature our PPLAC outing with John Grusd on May 16th as he leads us thru the Sepulveda Basin Natural Reserve and the Japanese Gardens. More information on all of our events can be viewed at pplac.com - Meetup calendar.
And last but not least, West Coast School. This is an once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity that PPC presents every single year. You get to spend an entire week with one famous photographer in small, intimate classes. It has changed the lives of many members; do not miss this! More info at ppconline.com.
If any of you ever has any questions or suggestions, please know that I am always available to talk to you, either by email ( marcia@marciagold.com) or by phone (310-377-0215) or at the meetings. Don't forget to renew your membership. You are a valuable part of this organization, and we welcome your attendance and suggestions.

April Speaker:
There is Life After a 79!
The inside story of PPA image competition
PPA's International Image competition is a world-renowned photographic competition, where entries are evaluated against a standard of excellence (not against each other). Image competition has been a vital part of the Professional Photographers of America for almost as long as the association has been in existence. Over the years, a great number of professional photographers have grown through print competition and have excelled in business and the art because of the standard put forth by the PPA and its members. Beginning in 2013, print competition is now "Image" competition. The competition has a new look with the acceptance of digital images. The judging process has changed and use of digital files is now a major part of competition. We will examine the new process and explore image preparation and presentation. This program will examine the process and results of professional image competition at the local, state, regional and international levels. We will review images from the PPA Loan Collection and we discuss the theories of the "12 Elements" and their foundations that make up the process of image competition. I will discuss how judges evaluate each image and review the scoring process so that each image is judged fairly and completely. Earning the prestigious Master of Photography degree and additional awards helps photographers market their studios and work. The Master of Photography degree is one of the highest honors that can be earned by members of the Professional Photographers of America.

You don't want to miss this day of fun
Ridin' the Red Line Rails!
Sign up today!
This is a very fun Outing with a huge number of photographic opportunities! We will be riding LA Metro's Red Line which runs between North Hollywood and downtown's Union Station. Many of the uniquely themed stations along the way are great subjects. The trains themselves are bright, shiny and present chances to introduce motion blur. There will be fascinating characters if you like street photography and the stations access interesting areas like Hollywood Blvd and downtown LA. We will be hopping on and off the train, leaving and entering stations and almost certainly stopping for lunch somewhere along the way.
Details:
· Date - April 3rd, 2016 (Sunday)
· Starting time is 8:45 A.M.
· We will meet in front of the entrance to the North Hollywood Red Line Metro Station at street level.
Cost:
· This Outing is free to all PPLAC members.
· There is a $49 fee for non-members.
· If a non-member signs up for the outing and wishes to join PPLAC prior to or on the day of the outing, then the $49.00 fee will be waived. If a non-member decides to join PPLAC in the future, the Outing fee will be applied toward the Membership fee.
· You will need to purchase a 1 Day Metro Pass at the station for $7 (Senior rate for 62 years and above is $2.50). The pass will allow you to get on and off of the trains as much as you want for 24 hours. The pass is delivered to a card called a TAP card. If you don't have one of these cards you will have to purchase it at the same kiosk where you buy the pass. The card is another $1. Don't worry. We will help you navigate the ticket procedure before we get underway.
Please contact John Grusd at johngrusd@gmail.com or mobile 310-365-6364 to sign up and receive more detailed information.

Save The Date!
This One's for the Birds...and More!
In this PPLAC Outing (with me, John Grusd) we will venture deep into the wilds of the San Fernando Valley and visit the Sepulveda Basin Natural Reserve. It is both home and stopover for waterfowl and shorebirds. This is a great place to practice photographing birds on the wing and at home in their lake and scrub habitat. The second part of the Outing is a visit to the adjacent Japanese Garden where you will find a beautifully sculpted 6 ½ acre garden with pavilions and a lake. It's a wonderful place to focus on the details and contrasts between the natural and man-made features of the garden.

Details:
· Date - May 16th, 2016 (Monday)
· Starting time is 6:30 A.M.
· You will need to purchase admission to the Japanese Garden for $5.00.
· You are also responsible for your breakfast.
