CAN THEY DO THAT?

Can my boss make a
"no-work-from-home" policy?

Yes, as the new CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, has done recently.  Click here to read the article CNN published.   While employers can legally determine where their employees do their work, there are legitimate reasons that employees might have to work from home, such as a disability.  Employers can deny working from home as a reasonable accommodation for a disability if they can show that it would be too expensive or burdensome for the employee to do so, or if the job requires that the employee be present in the office.  However, in the case of a tech company such as Yahoo, it seems that it would be more difficult to make an argument that a disabled employee needed to come to the office when all modern telecommuting equipment and technology is at the employer's fingertips.  Further, the wisdom of a policy such as this is questionable, as it may send a message to employees that their employer is inflexible and unwilling to assist an employee in his or her time of need.
