Orgalime Manifesto - Manufacturing a Stronger & Greener Europe

Welcome

Orgalime In-Brief edition 45.

In an open letter to the Heads of State of Member States of the European Union, ahead of the European Council meeting (27/28 June) Industry is calling for a long-term, consistent legal framework which allows for future investment planning in Europe.

It is our (The Alliance for a Competitive European Industry - ACEI - of which Orgalime is the chair at present) strong belief that Europe is in urgent need of a single project, much like the 1992 single market initiative launched in 1985.  The EU needs to develop a single industrial growth policy whereby energy, climate, environment and trade policies are aligned to support a 20% industrial GDP target, as a minimum, together with the creation of 400 000 new jobs a year in manufacturing [more]

"There really is no way back to business as usual..." Jos Manuel Barroso
Orgalime President, Sandro Bonomi was representing our industry at the very highest level at an 'Industrial Policy Conference' hosted by the the European Commission Directorate General Enterprise and Industry on 6 June.

The keynote speech was delivered by the European Commission President where he again referred to "no way back to business as usual..." maintaining his personal commitment from November 2012 "to create the right framework conditions for industry remains at the core of the European agenda" [more]
And what are our core messages to the European Council on how to attract more manufacturing investment to Europe?

So, what must be done by our politicians from our own industry's perspective?

Quite simply, we ask for:

  • An investment friendly and predictable regulatory framework in Europe
  • Less and better regulation
  • Ensuring competitive labour markets

The June European Council is set to pave the way on how to move forward to achieve the 20% of GDP industrial share target, proclaimed by the Commission Communication 'A Stronger European Industry for Growth and Economic Recovery'. Europe must become more competitive.  We believe that the results of this European Council must be to outline a programme which will lead to attracting companies to invest more in Europe, to build the factories of the future and thereby create new jobs, including in particular for young people, here in Europe.  The focus of the European Council must therefore be on making industrial policy the core policy of the EU rather than one of a string of what have turned out to be failing policies, which have progressively undermined the will and capacity of manufacturing companies to invest in the EU [more

Europe needs manufacturing:  Orgalime statistics and forecast - spring statement
"Europe needs manufacturing", so said the President of the European Commission, Mr Barroso, at the Orgalime General Assembly last November.

Now, Orgalime's economists estimate that the engineering industries turnover value in the European Union (EU) reached some €1,840 billion in 2012. This represents some 28% of the total EU output. The number employed stood about 10.3 million people. Total trade (intra + extra trade) of the industry represented by Orgalime, reached €1,290 billion and the industry counts for a third of the exports of EU manufacturers [more]

European Business Summit 2013 - Orgalime very much present...

Orgalime was very much present at the European Business Summit held at AutoWorld, Cinquantenaire in Brussels last month.  A popular stand in the 'Business Village' attracted many visitors keen to learn more about European engineering.  With our President, Sandro Bonomi, talking on a panel about 'Fostering European Competitiveness in Global Markets', our message about attracting industrial investment into Europe was firmly stated.

The eve of the event saw Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council will giving a keynote speech on 'European industry matters - Unleashing Industrial Growth', with Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani making an intervention.  The pre gala dinner cocktail was attended by HRH Prince Philippe of Belgium, whilst the business audience were afforded a keynote speech by Pascal Lamy, Director General of the WTO, over dinner [more]
