Maureen Belliveau, Executive Director
Greetings
from the Executive Director!

This is my most favorite season of all and right at this moment, as I write, the very beginning of our first major Nor' Easter has begun to release it's very first (of many inches) of its snowflakes, just in time for Thanksgiving!

I wanted to take these monthly opportunities to share a little bit about myself, what I've been up to and what I've been thinking about.

Most of you know that I have been working hard to meet as many of you as possible, Members, Non-members, City Officials and the community at large. I want to know your thoughts regarding the Chamber, what's important to you and what's not.

But you may not know that I live in Russell, with my husband (Mike), my beagle (Ruby), a cat (Blue) and three chickens (Nellie, Big Red, and Betty). Mike and I spend much of our time growing and preserving our own food. Health, nutrition and vitality are really important to us. What does this have to do with the Executive Director of your Chamber? Well, these principles actually permeate into my day job.

These values are really about paying attention to a "local' focus. It doesn't get much more local than my own back yard. As we need goods and services, Mike and I, travel out from there, which is what I hope you will consider doing this holiday season. Did you know that for every dollar you spend in your local economy up to 68 cents stays in your local economy? That means more dollars reticulate among your friends, neighbors and ultimately yourself. This is one of the most powerful tools you have when investing in your local economy's health and vitality!

For many years I have committed to shopping local for my goods and services, I hope to see during this holiday season and throughout the year as you invest in not only your personal health but in the health of your community as well!

Cheers to all of you and ciao for now!

Moe

Member News: Silver Spoon Celebrates 30 Years

The Chamber congratulates the Silver Spoon Restaurant, 73 Main Street, Easthampton, celebrating 30 years of being in business in the Easthampton community. From December 15 to 19, the restaurant will give away thirty $30 gift certificates. The restaurant will also have special pricing for the week, and will donate 10% of its sales for the week to the Easthampton PTO.

Since 1905, at least 12 different families have operated some type of restaurant at 73 Main Street. Starting in December 1984, the Devine family, after they had remolded and breathed new life into 73 Main Street, renamed it the Silver Spoon Restaurant. After being Mickey's for 30 years and a restaurant for most of the 50 years before that, 73 Main Street had become a staple in the community. In 1985, the McCarthy family took over the Silver Spoon and continued the tradition that Albert Elliot started in 1905, serving home-cooked meals at affordable prices. In 1989, the Boulanger family bought 73 Main Street, and the motto "Pleasing you, Pleases us" was born. Thelma also brought to the Spoon great homemade meals and soups.

The tradition of serving great food to locals and travelers alike continued when, in June of 1996, the Doyle family bought the Silver Spoon. It is now the longest-running restaurant business in Easthampton, if not most of the state. The Doyles have continued the legacy of serving great food at reasonable prices, with service that makes their customers smile and feel right at home.

The Silver Spoon is open 7 days a week, serving breakfast all day every day, and lunch Mon.-Sat.. Contact them at 413-527-3363 or see their menu and more at www.silverspooneasthampton.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/silverspooneasthampton.

Area News: Third Annual Valley Gives is Dec. 10

Valley Gives logo The third annual Valley Gives is a one-of-a-kind celebration of generosity for Western Massachusetts. On December 10, 2014, residents of Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties will join together for 24 hours in special events and online campaigns with the goal of getting thousands of Valley residents to make gifts to their favorite charities. Last year, more than 11,000 people donated over $2 million on Valley Gives day.

Here's how it works. Donors come to the Valley Gives website (www.valleygivesday.org) and make a gift to their favorite nonprofits between 12 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on December 10. Throughout the day, donors will be randomly chosen and their gift will be amplified with a "Golden Ticket," adding $500 to $1,000 to support their favorite nonprofit. More than 100 different nonprofits will receive this bonus. At the end of 24 hours, the nonprofits that have the largest number of unique donors will be rewarded with special grants from a prize pool of $225,000.

Chamber members who are participating charities are:

Valley Gives is hosted by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts and supported by the leading funding organizations serving Western Massachusetts. Sponsors, underwriters and friends of this effort include Chamber members Easthampton Savings Bank, Doherty, Wallace, Pillsbury & Murphy P.C., United Personnel, the Daily Hampshire Gazette, the Hadley Farms Meeting House, and Beetle Press.

Chamber Update
New Series: Monday Mornings with the Mayor

In partnership with Mayor Karen Cadieux, we have created a new event, Monday Mornings with the Mayor. The kickoff event will take place on Monday, January 12, 8-9 a.m., and is hosted by Janel Jorda of Web tactics, inc. (see details here). Future event hosts are Matt Waugh of T. Waugh Agency and David Strong of Strong Bus Corp.

We will meet every second Monday of the month at a different Easthampton business. Topics will range according to questions being brought by attendees. These informal meetings are open to the public and give the business community a chance to bring their questions and concerns directly to Mayor Cadieux.

We are looking for hosts who are willing to supply coffee and a space to meet. If you are interested in hosting one of these informative events, call Moe at 413-527-9414.
