Member News: ECA+ Wins NEPR Arts & Humanities Award

The Chamber congratulates

for winning this year's New England Public Radio Arts & Humanities Award, in the Emerging Talent category. The other two 2014 honorees are author Jane Yolen (Outstanding Individual) and the Performance Project / First Generation (Outstanding Organization).

Award recipients will be celebrated at the sixth annual Arts & Humanities Awards Gala, May 12, 2014, 6:00 p.m. at the Log Cabin in Holyoke.  Tickets ($75, or $550 for table of 8) are available for purchase at  NEPR.net or by phone at 413-545-3245. Proceeds support the programs and services of New England Public Radio.

NEPR attributes the vibrancy of Easthampton to the efforts of Easthampton City Arts+, through its innovative and diverse programs and activities in the community that enable local artists to showcase and market their works, while providing the public with the opportunity to discover emerging and established artists. From the NEPR press release: "From spearheading Easthampton's Cottage Street Cultural District (one of the first 15 cities in the state to be recognized as such); organizing projects like Easthampton Bear Fest, which drew thousands of visitors to Easthampton's bear sculpture-lined streets, to the monthly Art Walk Easthampton, C.H.A.T., and "Unbuttoned" networking and social events for artists and writers, and the implementation of numerous permanent public art projects from murals to sculptural bike racks, ECA+ has had an incredibly busy nine years...Powered by a group of hardworking volunteers that support its small staff, ECA+ is making big waves in one of the region's most exciting arts communities."

Established by the New England Public Radio Foundation Inc. in 2008, the NEPR Arts & Humanities Award has recognized the contributions of local talent and brings greater public awareness to the critical role played by musicians, artists, dancers, actors, writers, and teachers in western New England.

Member News: DYW Moves State Competition to Holyoke

For the first time in eight years, this year's state competition for Distinguished Young Woman Massachusetts was held locally. It took place Feb. 22 in the Lesley Theatre at Holyoke Community College.

DYW Easthampton winner Brianna Weltlich, 18, of Southampton, won two awards at the state competition. Weltlich took home scholarship awards in the Fitness category and the Spirit Award, voted on by the candidates.

L to R: Mackenzie Bowden of Halifax, Kaeleigh Smith of East Bridgewater, Cara Godlesky of Nantucket, Xin Song of Boston, Brianna Weltlich of Southampton, Susannah Johnson of Acton, Rachita Chaudhury of Franklin, and Rachelle Edmond of Medford. (Amy Riel)

Xin Song of Boston was the State winner, who will compete in the annual National Finals competition in June 2014. All State winners will compete for a share of at least $150,000 in cash scholarships.

The Distinguished Young Women of Massachusetts has recently found a new home in Western Massachusetts. Originally hosted in Franklin, the program moved to the Greater Easthampton area to help the program expand. Candidates spend a week living with host families, visiting local attractions, performing community service, and learning routines for the competition. All of this cannot happen without local volunteers and donations.

The best way to support the Distinguished Young Women program is through attending the annual competition in November or making donations at their many events throughout the year, which you can always find on their Facebook page. To find out more information, contact Jennifer Lawton or Vicky Puza-Allen at 413-388-5566 or  Easthampton@DistinguishedYW.org. More information can also be found at the DYW Easthampton website.
