In Memoriam: Marlene Krawczyk Marlene (LeBeau) Krawczyk died Thursday, Oct. 24, at the age of 76. She was a past president and executive secretary of the Chamber, and the Easthampton business community mourns her loss.
Marlene was born in Northampton, then moved to Easthampton, where she became a lifelong resident. Marlene's late father in law Anthony was instrumental with her and her husband Tom in forming the Greater Easthampton Chamber of Commerce. She co-owned Tom's Appliance of Easthampton for many years. From 1982 to 1983, she was president of the board of the Greater Easthampton Chamber, and then served as its executive secretary from 1985 to 2003, retiring in Jan. 2004. Marlene was a leader for the city of Easthampton, presiding over the Fall Festival, Big Rig Day and Easthampton's Christmas Lighting. She was able to accomplish all these things even while battling muscular dystrophy from the age of 16. Tom Conner, branch manager of Florence Savings Bank, was president of the Chamber from 2002-2003 when Marlene was executive secretary and remembers her with great fondness and respect. He says that Marlene served the Chamber during the period of Easthampton's "renaissance," when artists and entrepreneurs first came to the city and promoted its growth. "She was an individual who exemplified community spirit and work ethic," Tom says. "She always performed to the level of an executive director. She served under eight Chamber presidents, coordinating all the committees, attending all the meetings, and volunteering at every event, sometimes into the night. I remember wrapping up the Fall Festival one year at about 8 pm, and she and I viewed Union Street at sunset, remarking on how much the city was a classic piece of Americana. Marlene loved Easthampton and was so dedicated to the community. She was the heart and soul of the Greater Easthampton Chamber of Commerce."
We send our sympathies to Marlene's family and friends. Memorial donations in Marlene's name can be made to the Thomas and Marlene Krawczyk Community Scholarship, c/o Easthampton Savings Bank, Main Street, Easthampton, MA, or the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 33 Lyman St., Westborough, MA 01581.

Member/Area News: Gazette wins award, says farewell to Foudy
The Chamber congratulates Jim Foudy, who retired as publisher of the Daily Hampshire Gazette on Sept. 27 at a public celebration at the Hotel Northampton.
Foudy, 67, was named publisher in 2009, and his successful career with the Gazette spanned 36 years. Foudy told the Gazette in August he has loved working there because of the great group of people he's worked with, and also because of the way the community is so invested in its daily newspaper.
The new publisher is longtime Gazette employee Dennis Skoglund, a former circulation director there, and recent publisher of the Greenfield Recorder. Last year, Skoglund was named vice president of NNE's Pioneer Valley operations, which includes the Gazette, the Recorder and the Valley Advocate.
On October 10, the Gazette was also honored with the Newspaper of the Year award in its circulation category, in a competition run by the New England Newspaper & Press Association. The Gazette was judged to be the best weekday newspaper in the 10,000 to 15,000 circulatio.

We recognize the rich contribution the Gazette has made to the success of business in the greater Easthampton region, and we look forward to working with Publisher Dennis Skoglund in the future.
