|
I always try to be earth-friendly and I know that you do too! In the Chamber's efforts to be kind to our environment, to reduce unnecessary additions to our landfills and to properly and responsibly dispose of old and unused electronics and/or home or office appliances, we are proud to once again hold our annual Recycling Days event on Friday afternoon, September 13 and Saturday morning, September 14 at a great, central, location in downtown Easthampton.
You'll find the Chamber recycling crew at the lot at the intersection of Liberty Street and Mechanic Street (across from the Liberty Commons Building). On Friday the 13th, we'll be there from 1pm to 4pm and on Saturday the 14th, the folks will be there to assist you with your items from 8:30am to 12pm.
We will charge nominal recycling fees, ranging from $2 to $20, for your old computers, monitors, printers and peripherals, as well as, TV's, stereos, and VCRs. You will also be able to recycle home appliances (sorry, nothing with freon) and metal items, such as lawn mowers, grills (once again, sorry, no propane tanks) and lawn furniture. Plus, we'll gladly recycle your empty printer cartridges and cell phones at no charge.
100% of the recycling fees collected will benefit Chamber Community Programs including our annual Holiday Lights Fund.
Recycling services are courtesy of Duseau Trucking of Hatfield. The Recycling Days committee thanks them for their generosity!

Member News: Thank-You to Senator Knapik
The Chamber would like to acknowledge former Senator Michael R. Knapik for his support of business in the greater Easthampton area. He vacated his seat earlier in August and began employment as the executive director of advancement at Westfield State University.
Knapik (R) served in the Senate for ten terms, and represented the 2nd Hampden and Hampshire District, which includes Easthampton and Southampton. In addition to serving as a Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Ways & Means since 2001, Knapik also served on the Senate Committees on Ethics & Rules and Bonding, Capital Expenditures & State Assets, and was a member of several joint legislative committees.
Chamber President Patrick Brough says, "Senator Knapik was always supportive and would listen to what the business owners in Easthampton and Southampton had to say. He was present at many of the events over the years held by the Chamber. He was a big advocate recently of the connection with the MassDOT and the Chamber during the Manhan Bridge construction. He will be greatly missed, and we wish him well in his new career."
"What strikes me most about Senator Knapik was his willingness to work for what was best for his constituents," Exec. Director Eric Snyder says. "He always kept an open mind to all sides of a situation and, if it meant working with 'the other side of the aisle' to reach a favorable conclusion that benefited his district, he did so. Mike always kept in close contact with our chamber, eagerly supplying information and support to our business community. His advocacy and support to the burgeoning arts community and creative economy was superb. I wish him great success in his new role at Westfield State University. His hard work for greater Easthampton will be missed by the Chamber and its members."
There will be a special election on November 5 to fill the vacated seat. October 8 primaries will be held to select among two Democrats and two Republications for the November ballot. The individuals running are:
- David K. Bartley, D (Holyoke City Councilor)
- Michael Franco, R (Westfield Veterans Services Officer)
- Donald F. Humason Jr., R (Westfield State Representative)
- Mayor Michael Tautznik, D (Mayor of Easthampton)

Area News: "Celebrate Southampton" Moves to the Fall
T his year, the event "Celebrate Southampton," a one-day celebration of local community and history, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, from 10:00 to 4:30.
Previously know as Southampton Old Home Days until the name was changed in 2008, Celebrate Southampton is funded by the town and coordinated this year by a committee led by Robert Floyd of Robert Floyd Photography in Southampton. It will begin at 10:00 in the Town Hall's Senior Center with a "Memory Hour," at which a Southampton senior resident will speak about a topic of historical interest. The event then will move to Conant Park, where there will be musical entertainment, activities and food all day.
"The event is open to all-families, children and pets-and it's always a good way for people to meet and get to know their neighbors," says Floyd. "What is nice about this event are the traditions associated with it that people look forward to. I have done many workshops at country fairs all over the region, but there is something very special about this event. It's a celebration of living in Southampton-and in the Valley-with camaraderie and a real sense of community."
There is no fee to attend, and local businesses are welcome to participate with vendor tables or sponsorships. Please contact Robert at 413-529-2635 or floydphoto@charter.net for more details.
