Member Spotlight: All About You

All About YouAll About You LLC is a home care company whose offices are located in Easthampton. It is owned and operated by Marge Pietras, who started the business in 2007, joined the Chamber in 2008, and became a Board member in 2011.

All About You provides professional in-home care and support to seniors, including hands-on personal care, medication management, transportation, companionship, housekeeping, case management and family meetings.

Marge is an RN who had been doing similar work for 42 years and largely in the field of home care, starting with her first job for the Springfield VNA. "I had managed or administered other people's companies, and had an awakening at age 60. I said: I can do this myself, and I'll give the kind of service I would want my own parents to have."

Some may think All About You is a small company, but it's not. Marge employs over 60 staff (RNs, LPNs, HHAs and CNAs) and she serves both Hampden and Hampshire counties. She handles as many as 60 clients at one time, and they come from as far away as W. Warren and Granville. In addition to home care, Marge personally gives free onsite seminars to benefit the local caregiver community. Her mission is to give back to caregivers the experience she's gained over the years.

About a seminar she gave recently at the Easthampton Enrichment Center, Marge said, "I definitely connected with the people there, and I could see the benefit they were getting. Doing seminars has been gratifying, and I've met wonderful people. I did a seminar with the Westfield TOPPS group. There were 30 people in the room, and the dedication and support they gave to one another was impressive."

In the planning stage is a series of focus groups Marge plans to hold in order to improve her business; the groups include caregivers, referral sources, and her own employees.

About doing business locally, Marge said, "Easthampton is my home. I made a conscious decision to locate my business here. People are friendly, it's an enlightened community, and it's a good environment for supporting small businesses."

Marge feels that the Chamber works hard to bridge communication deficits between government and business. "Anything that can be done to promote business growth in this area is a plus. By networking with others in the business community, I can find other businesses that allow me to continue to use and buy locally."

Marge shared her favorite quote from Margaret Mead, summing up her business philosophy: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Marge can be reached at 413-439-0883. More detail on All About You, including a list of services and seminars, can be found on their website at www.aayllc.net .

Would you like your business to be featured in a future Member Spotlight? Contact the Chamber office and we will put you on the list.

Member News: Hidden Acres Wins CKC Breeder Award

Hidden Acres logoOn June 25, Continental Kennel Club President Mike Roy came to Hidden Acres Farm Mastiffs in Southampton to present their prestigious 2011 Breeder Merit Award to owner Diane St. Martin.

The Chamber congratulates Diane, who was honored for her meticulous breeding of the American Mastiff, also known as the "Gentle Giant." Ranging in size from 140 to 200 lbs., American Mastiffs are recognized for being loyal but restrained protectors.

Diane has been a CKC member since August of 2000 and registered her first litter with CKC in 2005. As a CKC Preferred Breeder for the past six years, she has distinguished herself by choosing quality breeding dogs for her breeding program, producing healthy, well-adjusted puppies for new puppy owners, and keeping accurate registration records. She is also committed to excellent customer service and ensuring that all of her puppies are placed in good homes with well-informed owners.

About receiving the award, Diane said, "Breeding American mastiffs is 'a labor of love' and it was amazing to be honored for doing what I love to do. Mastiffs is what we do every day; it's what we live, breathe and eat, so it was such a nice surprise to get that call from the CKC."

The annual award is CKC's top honor and Diane was its fourth recipient. CKC registers canines and breeders in 75 countries worldwide.

Diane can be reached at 413-203-1319, and her website is hiddenacresmastiffs.com

Area News: Michael Flynn of Norris School Wins Presidential Teaching Award

Michael FlynnMichael Flynn, a second grade teacher at the William E. Norris School in Southampton, was presented with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by President Obama at a White House ceremony in May.

Nominated by a fellow faculty member, Flynn was one of 85 math and science teachers nationwide winning this distinguished award. Winners were chosen by a panel of noted scientists, mathematicians and educators following an initial selection at the state level.

Flynn has been teaching at Norris for 13 years, and was a student teacher there as well. As a student himself, he struggled with math, and so as an educator he has dedicated himself to helping his own students overcome "math anxiety."

Michael said, "The problem for me as a student was that math seldom made sense. I would learn procedures to solve problems, but never understood why they worked. As a teacher, I work to build students' understanding of math so they can develop efficient, meaningful problem solving strategies.

Flynn also received the 2008 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year award and the 2009 National Education Association/Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence. He completed his master's degree in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in literacy at Lesley University in 2000. He is now using the scholarship he received for being the Teacher of the Year to work on a doctorate in education at Walden University in Minnesota.

We are open Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm stop by 33 Union Street Easthampton, MA 01027. Please do not hesitate to give us a call (413) 527-9414 or send us an email
