Alek and Bob with Pierre Dumazet

During Alek and Bob's journey through the Rhône Valley last fall, one of the places they made a point to visit was Domaine Dumazet in the Condrieu appellation of the Northern Rhône Valley. Condrieu is known throughout the world as the birthplace of Viognier and was made famous by Château Grillet; Domaine Dumazet was also one of the first four families producing wines in this appellation! The first vines were planted in 1860 and over the years they began planting in the top spots of the Northern Rhône. The total surface of their vineyards is still a modest 5 1/2 hectares (14 acres).

The vineyards are maintained with the highest respect for nature with no chemicals being used through any of the wine making process and everything being done by hand from the soil turning to the harvesting. Owner and winemaker, Pierre Dumazet, is upholding the excellence of quality that his family has produced for generations and still does most of the work in the vineyards himself. In addition to their vineyards in Condrieu, they also own vineyards in Côte Rôtíe, Cornas and St. Joseph that are all primarily made from Syrah. Due to the quality of their wines combined with the tiny production, the wines are usually only sold to long term clients and rarely could be found in the United States until now.

Domaine Marie-Paule Dumazet Condrieu Côte Fournet 2011

This small single vineyard comes from one of the highest vineyards in Condrieu, over 900 ft above sea level! The wine spends 12 months in oak barrels and then is transferred to large concrete vats before bottling. It is a very big Viognier that is rounded and balanced with very good acidity and rich fruit ending with a long finish. Although it is drinking nicely now, with a little age this will improve greatly! Pairs very well with creamy pasta and seafood or blue cheese.

Domaine Marie-Paule Dumazet Cuvée Charlemagne Cornas 2009

Cornas, meaning "burnt earth" in Celtic, is located in the southernmost part of the northern Rhône. Syrah is the only red grape authorized in Cornas. This robust wine offers great meaty earthiness on the palate that is typical for the region but, also exudes ripe, firm fruit with rounded tannins and a lingering finish. As the wine ages it will become even more elegant and complex. Pairs nicely with stews, red meat and strong cheeses.

A blend of mostly Syrah with a tiny amount of Viognier from the steep hills of Côte-Rôtie, an area that receives long hours of sunlight thus giving it its name that translates to "the roasted slope."
